A masterclass in comedy. Not a single second or line in this scene is wasted, it's all balanced to perfection. I'm even laughing at the blind man moaning about how he found a random monkey in his living room and now he lives with him. It's all genius
One of my favorite comedies. I love how the commissioner's nervous tick is almost non-existent early in the movie, yet by the end of the movie he can barely keep that eye open.
sheer comic brilliance on so many levels...not just Sellers but many of the cast..I can't remember how many times I have seen these scenes and just crack up every single time....Herbert Lom (Dreyfus) is so under-rated as a comic...but he was just superb in this role..his timing immaculate and fluid...watching his madness grow over the series of Panther movies was such a delight..I looked forward to every appearance...nothing compares these days
I agree. However, those of us also, who have watched these gems over the years, realize that it's not only the genius of Peter Seller, but the ensemble cast , who support him.
Does everyone remember the 1st time they saw this scene? I was 13 or 14 sitting in the living room with my dad. Both of our eyes were tearing up with laugher. Never forget it! Leave your memory!
My favorite scene between Dreyfus and Clouseau when Clouseau is in Disguise as a dentist and they both start sniffing the laughing gas and they can't quit laughing and Clouseau pulled the wrong tooth
That scene is hilarious I'm thinking about that one right now and laughing my ass off. People want to get a good ab workout, try sitting through the Pink Panther series. Your stomach and sides will feel like you did a couple of hundred crunches.
By the way...French police are very polite and will salute you if you approach them...they are very professional and are a total joy to interact with. I love the French....they are a great nation who hold dear common human values. I have been helped so often by French people...in their DNA it is written to help others in the great cause that is the furtherment of humanity.
I'm am genuinely curious about how Sellers' faux French accented English can be translated into actual French whilst maintaining the essence of the comedy? What's the French for "minkey"?
If you are having a Bad day there is nothing like the Pink Panther to cheer you up..... Absolutely hilarious. Peter was a genius in every sense of the word and is sorely missed from our screens. R I P PETER.

The Pink Panther series was one of the best comedy productions in cinematic history. Peter Sellers and Herbert Lom, were perfect for their respective roles.
monsta64 you are absolutely correct sir. If you have seen the whole movie, then you would understand that this is the beginning of chief inspector Dreyfus starting to go insane.
The dentist scene with the melting nose in TPPSA: I laugh as hard at it today as I did when I saw it in the theater. "There's only one man who would pull the wrong tooth."
Actually mistakes like that have actually happened, a toy gun that resembles the real gun and they get mixed up and somebody gets shot. Just like many Police Officers pull a Tazer and end up shooting someone with an actual gun.
@@carminemurray6624 I presume are referring to the incident involving an overly excited poorly trained yet ridiculously zealous female police officer who shot a man when she was supposed to be tazing him? I have to wonder what Dreyfus's wife had in mind though. i don't think we ever see her ever.
My mother was a london hairdresser in 1947 and amongst her clients were, Margot Fonteine, james Mason's wife Pamela and HERBERT LOM, who gave her her first pairs of silk stockings
That's good, but the one that always put me on the floor was, "I thought you said your dog does not bite." "That's not my dog!" Is #2 okay? "I fixed your doorbell from ring-ging. No charge!"
The sad thing was that Sellers didn't think this was great work, probably because Hollywood critics want maudlin displays of intense pathos. Sellers tried that too, but The Return, Revenge, and Pink Panther Strikes Again were hands down his greatest work. Pure comedic genius by both Sellers and Lom. And the writing was fantastic.
I think it was Revenge in which Clouseau breaks an expensive piano in someone's home. Then the owner says something about its value, and Clouseau confidently replies "Nut any mow". Funny stuff.
Another great film 🎥 🎞 with Herbert Lom was: "Doppelganger".... Doppelgänger is a 1969 British science fiction film written by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson and Donald James, produced by the Andersons, and directed by Robert Parrish. Filmed by the Andersons' production company Century 21, it stars Roy Thinnes, Ian Hendry, Lynn Loring, Loni von Friedl and Patrick Wymark, ***Herbert Lom.*** Outside Europe, it was released as Journey to the Far Side of the Sun, the title by which it is now more commonly known.
The genius of Lom here on display: you can see the buildup of the “hysterical laughter”, the madness crumbling in, like a slow avalanche - later on on full display. Thereby the minutious buildup of the character, it’s circumstances and developement.A master genius of comedian act in the planning, while Sellers was the improvising momentum, the improvising genius. No matter what success this series had, it’s hugely underrated. This should be pensum in acting classes, this is absolute gold. And totally, absolutely hilarious so tears run down your cheeks. Thank you all 3!
And Lom's acting genius comes to a head during his forced eulogy speech for Clouseau (written by the police chief's wife) in Revenge of the Pink Panther. That scene is the icing on the cake.
I bumped into Herbert Lom in London in 2011, about a year before he passed on. We were in a queue waiting for a taxi. I thanked him for his work and how much joy these films gave me and my family. He thanked me in turn and said he had lots of fun making them.
While we're passing along deserved praise to Sellers and Herbert Lom, let's not forget the man behind the camera, the brilliant, late Blake Edwards. Edwards could be modest about his talents as a comedy director, but sometimes the lack of intrusion and letting talent express itself as he did with Sellers is all that is needed. Edwards once told me he thought his great talent was pointing the camera toward Sellers in a wide shot and saying "Action." Then calling cut when either Sellers was through or everyone was laughing too loud and spoiling the shot.
Blake Edwards hired a fake fortune teller to tell Sellers that someone with the initials "B.E." would have a prominent place in his life. Sellers laid eyes on Brit Ekland and married her soon after because of the initials. I guess that backfired on Edwards !
super scene but what edwards done is genius he has sellars the blind man and minkee close up and also the bank being robbed.. the chimp bangs the window.. then the robbers pointing the guns but clouseau is sworn as a policeman to uphold the by stander laws ... great stuff...

There are just SO MANY layers of greatness here; the photography, the timing, the perfectly executed dialogue, and the chimpanzee minkey grabbing Clouseau's police stick. In my mind, this is some of the funniest six minutes on film ever.
Dreyfuss: Idiot. My blood pressure. Idiot. One day, Francois. One day I'll be rid of him forever. That'll be the day.- Something on your mind? Francois; - An order from the commissioner. “The Return of the Pink Panther” - one of the great comedy classics! And a wonderful comeback, ten years later, for Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau. Fabulous supporting cast, as well, including Christopher Plummer and Herbert Lom.
I love the way Dreyfus tries to persuade the commissioner that sending Clouseau would jeopardise their diplomatic relations with them. It's a worthy fear in his case, though.
One of the funniest film franchises ever. Sellers was so funny in all the Pink panthers films. Especially when sellers and kato would attack each other and destroy furniture.
A lot of people don't know that Sellers himself invented the entire Clouseau character, including the clothes (hat and trenchcoat), accent, and the character's personality. Starting with second Panther film, Clouseau's crazy word pronunciations and dialog were often ad-libbed on set by Sellers, but worked so well, they would usually change the script on the fly to confirm to Sellers. BTW, Sellers also ad-libbed a lot as Dr. Strangelove, but was so funny, he often had both the other actors and Kubrick in stitches! If you watch the scene where Sellers ad-libbed Strangelove's arm going mental, you can actually see the guy playing the Russian ambassador almost bursting out laughing, because Sellers kept surprising them. The "Mein Furher! I can walk!" was also ad-libbed first take, and Kubrick had to immediately cut away in editing, because all the cast around him paused for a second in surprise, then burst out in a roar of laughing!
That was the fastest laugh I've ever experienced in a film. Within the first 2 seconds in politely greeting the girl he hits his face with his truncheon.
I watched this last night and have seen this movie 20 plus times so I knew what was going to happen when Dreyfuss got the second cigarette and the camera panned to the hallway. You hear the shot the guy opens the door and there he sits with gun residue on his face. I totally lost it and laughed hysterically for 2 minutes. I can't remember the last time this happened been many years and I felt so much better. Sellers and Herbert Lom made people laugh. The best medicine. God bless.
"Have you anything to say?" "Could you lend me 50 Francs?" For some reason this triggered a laughing fit that took a very long time to recover from when I first saw this film.
40 years later and I still laugh my ass off every time. He was absolutely hilarious!

That was the fastest laugh I've ever experienced in a film. Within the first 2 seconds in politely greeting the girl he hits his face with his truncheon.
Nobody will ever portray Inspector clouseau like Sellers. A master!
God bless.
Comedy doesn't get better than this. Superb.
Peter Sellers character reminds me alot of our politicians today!😎👍
Herbert Lom's was just as great a turn as Sellers' in these scenes. The two together were just magic.
Chief inspector Charles Dreyfus was a vesy sane, mentally healthy and logical man. Then he met Clouseau..

"that begger was the lookout man!"
"Impossible!"
"Why?"
"Because he was blind!"
I love that line so much!
How did you know that he was blind?

A masterpiece!! The entire Pink Panther series allows you to sit back, relax and laugh out loud.
The absolute best…..the great Peter Sellers……
Herbert Lom : the funniest EVER.
"The Pink Panther" fillums varied from excellent to merely very good. A work of jeaneus...
Love the way Inspector Dreyfus says with contempt... "you said minkey".
Yes, chimpanzee minkey.
Herbert Lom was brilliant.
Peter Sellers was a comedic genius!!
"How can an idiot be a policeman... Answer me that."
"It's simple, all he has to do is enlist."
Still one of the best lines in a comedy.
Absolutely!!!
How about, 'I wont to keel him, I wont to keeel him,' screamed inspector Dreyfus as he was being dragged off the lawn by two men in white coats.
"Have you anything to say?"
"Could you lend me 50 Francs?"
For some reason this triggered a laughing fit that took a very long time to recover from when I first saw this film.
@@MarkPalmerISP Same here!! 😂😂😂😂
Could you lend me 50 Francs
Beggar or minkey was breaking the leuw 😂😂😂😂😂. Asking his boss to lend him 50 francs hahahahaha
Herbert Lom had the best laugh.
"How can an idiot be a police officer?" "Very simple; all he has to do is enlist." LOL. You got that right.
