🇬🇧 In the heart of the Guadarrama mountain range, only 50 kilometres from Madrid, stands the town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial.
Mount Abantos, its pine forests and the Herrería estate form the natural surroundings of this place, which has its focal point in the Monastery of El Escorial. Its urban layout is composed of a harmonious collection of ancestral homes in the Herrera style, with rationalist avenues and small squares in an earlier style. Nestling in the Madrid mountains, it offers a great many leisure opportunities and cultural routes, such as those which take the visitor to Ávila, Segovia, Toledo or Madrid.
The Madrid-region town of San Lorenzo del Escorial, a Historic-Artistic Site, grew up around the Monastery of El Escorial. This architectural gem, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, was ordered to be built by Felipe II in the 16th century to commemorate the Battle of San Quintín. An urban layout slowly developed around it, since the aristocrats and middle classes from the capital had their summer residences erected here. It is, in short, an elegant town rich in architectural heritage and surrounded by mountains and forests.
    The Monastery
The Royal Monastery is a complex structure designed by Juan Bautista de Toledo and built by Juan de Herrera. The simplicity of its lines focus all the attention on the harmony of its courtyards, fountains, cloisters and towers.

I totally agree with you, the building has a simple architectural style, it is not very ornate but I think that because of that it is harmonious despite being huge. Thank you very much for your visit my friend. Have a good day 😊

Hola! I just finished watching the video on this late Sunday night. Very enjoyable. What a beautiful town. The gardens at the beginning are very impressive when viewed from that spot. Very geometric and formal, sort of the way I think of traditional English gardens. I wrote down just a few notes on things that I liked as I was watching it, and as I look at them now, I can't even read my own writing. 😂The mountains in the distance are beautiful, they look very similar to Southern California mountains.
Interesting fountain at 12:43. The little girl with the stroller thought so too. 😂Very cute. You really get a sense of how big the building is at 14:00, and the plaza around it is also huge. Hard to believe they could build such big, impressive buildings such a long time ago.
This street at 18:40 is really nice. The side courtyards were beautiful, especially the Casa de Cultura. The pink building (Royal Charles something 🤔) was picture perfect. I imagine this street is really bustling with tourists in the summer season. Very nice cafe at the hotel (Miranda?). I would definitely visit this town if I were in Madrid.
Very nice portico at 24:07! And so many places to have lunch at 25:24! I didn't notice what time it was on the clocktower, but it looked like people were getting the restaurants ready to open. And I did remember the word 'ayuntamiento' too. 😂 At 29:56 there were some very, very nice houses (I guess). Looked like a very upscale section of town. Beautiful final shot, as always.
Thanks for the tour. I always enjoy them. Take care.

Hola! How have you been doing these last two weeks?
Yesterday I saw on tv news that the solar eclipse had a lot of impact there, and I could also see on the map that Boston was close to the path of the total eclipse, so I hope you were able to enjoy it. Here, however, we will have to wait for another occasion 😄
Thank you as always for dedicating your Sunday night to watching my tour.
You are right, mountainous landscape in the background is very beautiful, I suppose that was, along with the proximity of Madrid, the reason why the king decided to build the Monastery there, it is a very quiet place and where you can take routes through the nature. On these dates, although it cannot be seen on this tour, some mountain peaks are snow-capped (on my next tour it will be seen better).
Yes, the building is huge, it is difficult to appreciate how big it is in a video but I think that from the center of that square is where you can best appreciate its size. I forgot to tell you in my previous video that the building also has a school inside (the entrance is on the left side of the main façade), just when I finished my tour the students went out for recess and that whole square was full of children playing, maybe it would have been curious to have started my tour at that moment, although I would also have had a good chance of getting hit by a ball from one of the children who was playing soccer 😂
That street you mention also seemed very beautiful to me and I was surprised that it was so empty that morning because the previous days I was there it had much more atmosphere.
Casa de la Cultura can be translated as House of culture, this is the name in Spain for cultural centers where exhibitions are held or cultural courses are taught.
The hotel you mention is Hotel Miranda & Suizo, I know this because it was where I stayed during my visit to San Lorenzo de El Escorial 😂 It is a very cozy hotel and the cafeteria had a very beautiful classic look, plus the breakfast was really good 😄
Portico is very common in towns in the interior and north of Spain, it is used to shelter from the rain since it rains quite frequently in these areas of Spain. I'm sure you've seen it on many of my previous tours.
I think it was 9 or 10 in the morning when I filmed this tour, that time is the usual time when the delivery trucks take things to the restaurants and also when the tables on the terrace are usually set up for lunch time in case of that they do not offer breakfast on the terrace.
I think that seeing my tours, Ayuntamiento and Plaza Mayor are the two words in Spanish that you are going to end up remembering even if you don't want to😂
The final part of the tour is a residential area with beautiful mansions from the 19th century that was also perfect for me to finish the tour right where I started.
I'm glad you enjoyed the tour, I hope you like my next tour too. Nos vemos! Take care!!😊

@@WalkingSpain Ah, you chose a nice hotel to stay at! The cafe looked good too. :)
Yes, we had the eclipse here yesterday. The path of totality runs right through Maine, just about a 2 hour drive north from where I am, but it was 96% total here. I was going to go north and do a video in the total darkness, but my car isn't too reliable, so I just stayed here and took a walk on the beach during the eclipse.
The light does get very dim and it looks weird, but even at 96% sun blocked, it's really not too dramatic. Interesting, but not spectacular. But fun, lots of people out watching it. 😎

@@bostonwalkdrive7763 I am sure that both in Maine and in Boston it must have been a great experience. I hope we have the opportunity to see it here one day.
      Have a nice week!
