Classic Yu-Gi-Oh Duel BUT Using Video Game Rules!

We decided to open a box of Legend of Blue-Eyes White Dragon, build decks and duel! But this time we're dueling with the same rules used in early retro Yu-Gi-Oh video games like Forbidden Memories and Dark Duel Stories. Monsters are assigned alignments, similar to types in Pokémon, which interact with each other in battle!

it would be fun to see you use some of the other old rules lol, like drawing up to 5 instead of drawing once per turn, dumping as many cards as you want from your hand straight to the graveyard (but only playing one card each turn), summoning monsters in face-down attack position and etc

    • @Envy_May
      @Envy_May Před měsícem +4

oh actually just to add one more thing: at the end you mention wishing it was easier to know alignments, but the original field spells were actually designed with the alignments from the _manga_ in mind, so for shorthand, you could totally try using that ? (since it says on each card which types they buff)
there wouldn't be as many alignments but it would be like you know forest = forest, wasteland = earth, mountain = thunder, sogen = fire, umi = water
and the strength cycle would presumably go water > fire > forest > earth > thunder
as for the magic cycle, i reckon you could probably also just do types like spellcaster > fairy > fiend > machine
(loosely based on the original magic cycle but "dream" is replaced with machine because machine doesn't appear on any of the original field spells, and also it would be lore accurate to joey vs bandit keith for them to be strong against spellcasters)
( pyro also doesn't appear on any of the original field spells but you can lump it in with sogen since the manga associates the sogen field with fire for whatever reason )

Actually, it maybe was. LoB was created including many OCG sets wich were released at this time. So it is the reason of the time we got the tcg those cards were that hardly unbalanced. And the first YuGiOh rulings were completly different too... i don't know this ruling, i did never translate it or read into it. But the original first ruling was different and i would say: we got the duelist kingdom arc with an own ruleset (ok that one is the original source if we talk about the manga) and we got many games with that ruleset, even on GBA (the sacred cards and reshef of destruction).

@@Brave_New_TubeRush Duel is a whole lot of fun, it uses separate card pools so all the insane rules aren't that game-breaking.
Other than draw until you have 5 cards in your hand, you can also normal as many times as you want during your main phase. So you can normal summon two level 4 monsters and then tribute for a level 8 monster in the same turn. The way they balanced this is to make all monster effects once per turn, no quick effects, no trigger effects, no graveyard effects, and no searching. It's all about rebuilding your board every turn as you and your opponent keeps destroying each other's field. If the decks have the same strength, the game can last quite long, with no players ever feeling like they're in huge disadvantage.
That said, the format is not officially available outside Japan, if you want to play officially, you can either play Duel Links (which is a hybrid between Speed Duel and Rush Duel) or play the Rush Duel game on Nintendo Switch, neither have the majority of the cards in the format. If you want to try the format out "unofficially" you can always try printing proxy or play on fanmade simulators.

If y'all end up doing this again, you need to adopt even more of the rules! In the old games, they wasn't such a thing as a "Fusion monster", it's just that some monsters could be summoned from outside of your deck by fusing cards in your hand/on your field. Technically, your "Metal Dragon"s, "Darkfire Dragon"s, and even "Gaia, the Dragon Champion"s should've gone in the Main deck. Ditto for cards like "Crab Turtle" and "Hungry Burger", they could go in the Main deck or be summoned from outside the deck using the appropriate Ritual card.

I actually really likedd this "format". though it is a little weird that alignment kills, maybe they should just get like a 50 percent atk/def bonus. but either way great video!

I absolutely love this format of combining different eras of yugioh gaming!
I grew up on the old school yugioh format and watched all of your rare hunters format recently!
So I love to see this just show up in my feed and if you continue it I would watch every video :)
I would love to see this continue I enjoy seeing your takes on yugioh but this was quite the surprise!

When sleeving up, you could put little reminder strips of paper or similar in with the card so you don't have to refer to a sheet every time it's played. With that in mind, I feel like Rare Hunters could be restarted with this new rule set and be even more exciting!

Ah Forbidden Memories. That game was frustrating until I took the time to memorize the Twin-Headed Thunder Dragon combos. The game was SOOOOOO much easier after that, lol. I haven't played in 20 years or so but this makes me want to play again.

Me and a friend have played anime decks for years now and we decided to put Ritual Monsters in the "Fusion/Extra Deck" just so we could play with them more often, Duelist Kingdom gave us the excuse and it was a great decision plus alot of fun 👌

Fusion Summoning not needing Polymerization is such a fun idea - and actually makes those weaker fusions usable outside of abusing stuff like Instant Fusion. It was fun seeing some of those monsters actually get used.

This was a intriguing concept! It really changes the layout of the game to have such an elemental sephirot of weakness VS strength. The only thing that would have made it better was BS Duelist Kingdom rulings based on card text! Reminds me of the old DD Tower event in Duel Links or Wave Duels two of my favorite events I miss greatly.
Great idea guys! Would love to see this one continue.

Never thought of playing yugioh this way, and tbh it sounds pretty fun and interesting! Excited to see how the duel turns out! I definitely like this idea and want you guys to do more of it with the other oldschool packs! Would also be pretty fun to see you guys do this type of thing with a new yugioh set as well since times have changed SO much, i think it would be very interesting to see how that would unfold! Great video and great work duelists!
    Edit:
PS: would also be a fun idea of oldschool joey and pull from an older set and just treat the fusion monsters like a normal monster and put them in the regular deck

It actually felt very fair in the sense that monsters always felt vulnerable. You also need a variety of monsters to make sure you can recover for the next turn. The concept of having engine specific cards would be detrimental here because it's easy to counter. if we got a modern version of this and you had a third person make a judgement call on what attribute the monsters fell into, I think the video would do very well.

Man I loved Dark Duel Stories and Sacred Cards. Cool to see you’re doing a video on them. But there is one more rule in the old Gameboy games, and that is that facedown cards only stay on the field one turn I believe, else they go away. It’s use your trap in 1 turn or lose it next turn. At least I think this was how Dark Duel Stories was. Else it was just you can only have one facedown card and if you set another trap it overwrites it.
Anyway I loved this and I sure would love another similar video since you guys asked if there was interest. :)
