  • It is essential to feed your hotbin but how often? It is suggested to feed it once a week but I think it should be at least twice a week. Today I will show you an experiment I made. I fed my hotbin as usual - every other day - and checked the temperature. I then gave it a week break. Check how the temperature changed!

    Hi Beanie, I made my own hot bin composter, from insulation, loaded it up as per your instructions, plenty of grass and weeds, food waste etc, next day it was smoking! Even the top gauge was in the green, having a shredder makes life easier for wood chips and even cardboard, thanks for your info.

      Well done, Barry. You obviously did a great job building it. Thanks for watching and sharing your journey. A shredder is defiantly a bonus.

    Hiya Beanie family yea I would have give the composter to a community garden it was being run for children but a man that cuts grass for people said they don’t want it so would still give it to a garden group but it’s getting to know some will keep asking around , my son keeps garden tidy but not a garden freak like me . 😂 life’s a pain when u can’t do things you want to do but I will enjoy watching you getting the steam up on yours Love to family Jean X

      May be they have watched the videos and have seen how hard it can be. I am sure someone will want it they sell like hotcakes on the internet so it would be a bargain for someone. Would be nice if a school could have it. We are always happy to hear from you and now you will just have to pretend that you are still using it. I am sure you are still doing more than most but take care and keep us up to date with things.

    Hi Beanie family nice to see you all sorting your composting ,thank goodness better weather here my composting days unfortunately have had to come to an abrupt end so sad unable to set it on due to health problems , I am able to sort my garden but not able to cut everything up and look after the composter such a shame as I did love it , it’s like brand knew all washed out and sat in the garage sad after paying all that money for it and only useing it for the few months , I’m unsure how to sell it but I would let someone have it half price as it’s a shame not to be used . I loved all the banter on your videos and the enjoyment seeing all the great compost coming from it , anyway I will keep watching your videos love to see you all and your composting , I am going to keep looking after my garden as long as can keep doing it’s taking me longer to do things that’s so annoying , young Beanie growing up quickly , nice to see you all hope all going ok love to you all Jean up in the rainy north 💕💕

      Hi Jean lovely to hear from you.
      That is sad news but as we both know it is not the easiest of things to look after. If you were closer I would have come once a week and cut your stuff up myself. As they say in life it is better to have loved than to not so I guess it is better to have tried hotbin composting even if for one season.
      I thought you were going to give it to a community garden? As they say time is the biggest thief and I guess we all feel that as we get older and we cannot do things as easy as we could do in our prime. Just enjoy the garden and may be your son would like to take over the hotbin? Take care and lovely to hear from you again.

    Your mix is a lot dryer than mine but my compost is good like yours. Must be the welsh air. I agree about the regular feeding. Mine would drop to about 30 if I missed a week. Keep the info coming, very helpful

      Thank you Ken. May be its all those leeks. In this video I did happen to have a lot of dry waste but I do try and keep it dry as it is amazing just how much water can be in the kitchen caddy waste.
      Good to hear your compost is good as I said we had great weather for this video or I feel it would have dropped to as you said around 30. Keep up the good work.

    Thanks Beanie, very helpful advice and good to see the younger generation getting involved (will he be getting a mini beanie hat?). Ive been feeding my mini bin every third day since the beginning of April and it seems to keep it hot. The lowest temperature during that time has been 50C, Ive continued with adding plenty of old bread/pastries to the mix. Its great that the weather is improving and everything growing again. Enjoy your garden.

      Thank you Margaret. He has more hair than me so he is fine. You are doing a fantastic job. We need to come and film you. When are you planning to empty yours?
      It does go to show that constant feeding is important as you are proving.
      Enjoy the weather and composting it is a great time of the year for it.

      @@BeanieComposter Hi Beanie, re emptying the bin I normally wait until either the bin is full or its so compacted that I cant get a cane to go down to the bottom, with the latter situation I can tell that the air flow is restricted as the temperature drops down. Each time I empty about a third - so up to top of hatch. Since I got the bin last September I have removed 5 lots of compost (rough estimate is 165 litres), all mulch quality but not smelly and more recent batches have been dryer and with smaller chunks. At the moment bin is not full and waste is reducing quickly due to high temperatures in bin.

      @@margaretedwards4076 That is excellent. It is amazing when things are hot how much you can keep putting into it. Thank you for the information.

    I’ve noticed since emptying mine on the 2nd April I haven’t been able to get it up to 60°. Although it is always in the green it’s not near 60°. I think it is a bit wet so I’m trying to add more paper and cardboard. Your level drops down quicker than mine also. I’m still getting lots of leachate. Twice since emptying I’ve had a glut of worms coming out the grill and out the spout when I opened for leachate. Most of them were babies.

      @BeanieComposter  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi I have had the same thing happen to me also.
      Sometime I find a good stir as far down as possible can help get the air flow back. Sometimes it can just take time but normally if you are still adding enough waste then it is normally a good stir. I can still get a lot of leachate even when the temp is hot. Let us know how it goes. There is never a easy ride with these hotbins.

    Hi BC … I’ve been going only ten days now with my Mini. She’s v sweaty … lots of moisture when I open the lid. Smells good and stays about 60 with a feed every two days. Is sweaty ok? Thanks for all your great videos - couldn’t have done it without you.

    • @BeanieComposter
      @BeanieComposter  Před rokem

      Hi Sarah sweaty is good. What I will say is just make sure you are putting in enough paper so that your hotbin does not get over wet and goes anaerobic. It sounds like you are doing amazing so keep up the good work. As you say it smells good so I would not worry. Well done.

    You seem to have a lot of waste. Before you got the mini, did you ever find you ran out of room in the hotbin?

    • @BeanieComposter
      @BeanieComposter  Před rokem +1

      Hi James. There are a few times during the year when you have so much waste that even with the HB running hot you may have to store some waste. I always try to make sure the HB is running at least at 50 degrees plus and as long as you don't add more than the recommended amount of waste you will never over fill the HB as you will need to empty it before it over fills. When it is running hot it is surprising how much waste it will get through. So in short I never run out of space in the HB but I do need to store waste as it cannot all go in at once. Hope that helps.
