  • Spring and summer bring lots of waste, sometimes too much for your hotbin to digest. Today we will show you a few tips how to manage your garden so that you do not accumulate so much waste waiting to be hot-composted.

      Thank you very much. Hoping for some rain as the grass is starting to suffer with lack of water and hence not having to cut as much.

    With hot bins being expensive to buy I tried making my own which failed because ordinary polystyrene absorbs moisture and eventually it did not work however I was not put off, having obtained a wheelie bin with no lid I built a frame around it leaving a void which was filled using pieces of packing polystyrene and expanding foam to fill any gaps now it’s a completely different story fully functional working very well at a fraction of the cost.

      Hi Alan. Well done on making your own. With HB's at £300 then that is a lot of money to lay out. Not everyone has the DIY skills but you show that it can be done. What sort of temperatures are you achieving?

      @@BeanieComposter thanks for your comments temperatures are currently showing on high green bordering the red zone, on the plus side you can really give the contents a good stir knowing your not going to damage the sides as wheelie bins are made of tough stuff

    Hi, I have some pics to send you regarding the various different compost bins and methods at the Centre for Alternative Energy in mid Wales. I think you’ll agree that they need some advice on using the Hotbin Mini! Where should I post the photos please?

    Question for you I completely emptied my hotbin beginning of April it is now currently a little over half full about 55c and doesn't smell. However I am not getting any liquid out the bottom of my mark 2 bin. I've never had this problem before. Any ideas

      Hi Jennifer, what type of waste are you putting into it? Mine is producing a lot of leachate but is running at 60 degrees and when I open it I can see the steam that is condensing hence causing the leachate. Plus some of the waste is very wet that has been stored for weeks and until the recent dry spell I was cutting the grass twice a week.
      According to the HB website you are only supposed to get a cappuccino cup worth of leachate a week so maybe its just the case that you have you mix down to perfection. It is also warmer and drier so if you are not producing that much some maybe evaporating.
      Is your HB producing a lot of steam? I know you are at 55c but sometimes the HB shows it is hot but is not that steamy. I do believe that when it is steaming a lot that is when you produce the most leachate.

      @@BeanieComposter thanks for the reply
      I've not even had one drop of Leachate come out of the tap even if I tip it forward.
      When I first open it there is a bit of steam not enough to mist up my glasses. I've been putting in grass once a week with some weeds and fruit peelings in the week. The fruit is probably the wettest thing I put in. We haven't had rain in a few weeks could that been a reason?

    • @BeanieComposter
      @BeanieComposter  Před rokem

      @@Jennifer-5 It is not the lack of rain. We have had no rain here for weeks and mine is still producing plenty of leachate. I am feeding my large one a builders bucket of waste every other day. Are you feeding it enough? I know the heat can remain but the steam produced is less when you say only feed it once twice a week. That could be the reason. Have you checked there is no holes or seepage anywhere around the bottom.
      I do think that with the wind drier weather it could just be a case that there is not enough wet waste to produce enough water /steam and it is evaporating before it leachy to the bottom. How dry is your mix? Maybe add less paper for a couple of weeks if it seems very dry.

    Gardens looking great! Mine needs LOADS of pruning - it’s basically a jungle and hotbin and two darleks and two brown waste wheelies still aren’t enough!! On the positive - hotbin still going well at 70deg non stop since all my problems!! Still haven’t got round to putting new mesh on (I’m a bit scared it’ll disrupt the airflow!!!). Never had it go so well for so long!!!

      Hi Kate, that sounds like you have a very large estate not a garden. Your HB is on over drive. Like you my HB has been at 60 degrees since the worm issue. I know the mesh is there for the air flow but it is also to prevent any vermin form nesting there so may be worth getting that in place before winter sets in.

      @@BeanieComposter ha no estaré! Just usual long suburban garden but v established shrubs that are all overgrown. Also in Surrey and yes the rain has really helped but it’s helped growth! Yes I def need to get the mesh on. It’s off drive now and down bottom of garden so more likely to attracts vermin there. Up on breeze blocks but won’t stop them.
