That was awesome. As a DnD noob, I didn't figured it out he was supposed to be the GM NPC who is there purely for "balance" reasons, the party was maybe not strong enough to survive the underdark, so the paladin went along to guaranteed their safety. This movie really does deserve a 9/10 or 10/10 just because you have non-D&D fans that will enjoy it for what it is. But to those of us that are D&D fans, we can appreciate it even more because they actually had people that care about D&D and do it so much service. I know for one the Sorcerer actor took the time to use actual ASL in his spell casting gestures, and also they took the time to make mention of how Wild Magic is random and why he sometimes doesn't cast what he meant to cast, in the scene with the Intellect Devourers, it kinda made sense because none of their classes typically have High Intellect, in the last scene when they were fighting the Wizard, they kinda showed that the Stone Dragon was a Concentration spell because she kept trying to stay away and you could see her focused on the dragon and chanting. Then as soon as she got hit, failed the Concentration check, whoops there goes the summon! So many small touches like this in the movie, and I love it. I want a sequel so bad as long as they keep this same heart!

As a D&D player, the best part of the film really is just imagining the characters as players and the story being pushed along by the Dungeonmaster (DM). Watched it with my partner who also plays D&D and we just loved whispering at each other during scenes about how that character was obviously rolling low on the dice and failing, how the DM must have been having a headache improvising to go along with the players' dumb ideas, or how the players were chatting outside the game to come up with an unorthodox solution after discovering new items and information.
I'm not a hardcore D&D fan (and a lot of the references and callbacks to lore in the movie went over my head) but even as a player who's just dipping their toes into D&D it was an incredibly fun time to watch and relate to the characters' and the imaginary DM's behaviors and thought processes, presented through a bright and beautiful fantasy movie.

Something I loved about the beginning, even if it wasn't intentional, is Johnathon being late and missing the story/character set up is sort of like waiting to start your DnD session from one person being late and everyone else is like "we'll catch them up just start!"

Now they've finally found the tone and formula for a D&D movie maybe we'll get to see the big stories from the Forgotten Realms books too: The Crystal Shard, the Cormyr/Sea of Fallen Stars/Myth Drannor and Moonshaye Isles, etc. The Baldur's Gate games as well.

Best gag from this movie has to be the concentration fail on the illusion when they were infiltrating the place. How it just breaks down in the most cursed ways possible.

None of these reviewers spotted the old Dungeons and Dragons cartoon easter eggs? I've wanted to see that for literally decades. soon as I saw Bobby the Barbarian, Hank the Ranger and Eric the Cavalier I damn near screamed in the Cinema.

I watched it tonight at the cinema and overall I thought it was really good very true to the source material but for me the pacing was extremely fast they fit a shit ton in 2hr14m run time and honestly I think they had such good material here we could have done with it being a little longer with more time to flesh stuff out but honestly this was a really really fun film especially if you love dnd

My dad is a huge R. A. Salvatore fan (even met the guy before) and played D&D back in the old days of THAC0 and such. He loved this since he also has played Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Knights, and Icewind Dale. As a huge fan of the Forgotten Realms setting myself, I was picking out things that felt like the reverence to the fans; they didn't talk down to us nor spit on us. This felt like a D&D game being played.

I was pleasantly surprised after multiple people told me how enjoyable it was, even for non-D&D people like me. Made me laugh, and enjoy all the guild members by the end. Simple but effective, would definitely rewatch!
