  • Meet the Karenas, a Maori family of eight, 50 wild horses, a beach, a mountain and a burnt-down house. Peter Karena and his wife Colleen fight to inculcate in their children the qualities of independence, bravery, and happiness amidst the breathtaking scenery of New Zealand's untamed Ruahine Mountains.
The family doesn't have many worldly possessions, but they are physically endowed in a way that most of us can only imagine. The kids play and go on hunts while riding bareback. They are tremendously confident, fearless, and untamed, acting as if risk is an alien concept.

“What I do for a living is that I live for a living, what I do for income is whatever I can without comprising my integrity. If I can combine the two - the living and the income - then that’s good.”

Difference is you work to live. They don't. They live to work. They they need to go to a 9am to 5pm job and worry bout school drop offs, or uni trips or that city life. They got everything they need, the hunting, the horses for exploring and gatherings, the country and valleys and ocean and most of all. Their family. And if they take up smoking cigarettes. Easy done. The Te Arawa Trail. Which is a pathway that runs from the top of new zealand to the bottom and along that trail are tobbaco trees. The native fruits and veggies and plants and herbs along with british introduced tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, apples, lemons etc. They have everything they need. Except their whare. Aka home. Their marae aka family gathering place past and present and future. Their peace and harmony.

Your family philosophy, morals and values are so heartwarming. I feel so sad for you that you don't have the love and support of your father. He is the one who is missing out on so much. An inspiring beautiful Māori family. I'm sorry for what has happened. There's so much love in this family. My experience as a child learning about the Māori culture installed the happiness and love that I've needed to carry through my life. As a Pākehā woman I feel there's still so much we can do collectively as a nation to raise marginal communities and our most vulnerable to make our nation a happier place. I love my country but I sometimes find it hard to be proud of it when you look at our history from colonialism, the British politicians and today's attitudes. We have a lot to be proud of but again there needs to be more support.

its sad the jealousy from his dad came to that point. To destroy huge family legacy for the sake of utter selfishness and ill feelings towards his son, the impact is his mokopuna are effected by it all. Peter you can see he still cared about his dad in some way, all he was doing was living life with is family in the family home that was rich with history, whakapapa, connection. Colleen and Peter have given their babies the best childhood.
Its also sad that their relationship did not last as i thought it would, but they got beautiful children who have lived a rich life and learned the best skills.
Now in 2024 they would all be young adults living their own lives but keeping the core values they were taught.

He aha te mea nui i tenei ao?
He tangata,he tangata,he tangata.. isn't that a Maori saying or proverb or something.its sad to see whanau like this and the whole World's watching,i don't know what's going on up there in your hinengaro (brain) the father &son , just look at your beautiful mokos and children , you'd think the elder would know better being older and wiser, but no,he sounded a bit nasty when I heard him talking to the lady.. And the son's not helping things by saying on the documentary that his father doesn't tell the truth about who shot what on their hunting trips back in the day .😔 But this young falla sounds alright his wife and kids all happy,at least he's got no bulldog or fist tattooed all over him,he just wants to do good and the right things for his young family, where ever they go from here i hope to God they succeed ,e mihi atu kia koe e hoa
mau tonu ki o tumanako me hoki to whanau ataahua God bless

      Your asleep:
If this is true why are the tribes taking back “There Land” forshore & Sea bed, wake up your dreaming while your tribes are getting rich out of claiming there so called rights and taking back our land!
It doesn’t matter what color skin you have there will always be greed, Maori are no different

@auintogold4725 You're asleep, buddie, your tupuna would be disappointed. When they said OUR LAND, they were meaning for all the generations to come. They knew exactly what they were talking about.
Whatungarongaro te tangata, toitū te whenua.
Maori are taking the land back because the government is destroying it and wasting our taxed dollars on rubbish ideas and lining their pockets.

There is so much here that doesn't add up. They have clearly been living in the step fathers family home for quite some time so there has clearly been a more recent falling out which he is extremely vague about as the wife doesn't even seem too keen to say. I'd say the step father feels taken advantage of. They were going to the auction to buy the house so why didn't they buy some other land of their own when it fell through. How can he afford that many horses and kids when making it look like the horse trekking business was selling his soul somehow lol. How did the house burn down. I don't know I really don't see the beautiful way of life others see from the sounds of the comments section. It just feels like we are being fed one liners with no explanations. He seems like a hustler. If he truly lived how he spoke his family would be living a peaceful life.

I just read a comment from someone that was local to the family. The 'husband' ended up going to Germany with one of the producers of the documentary, leaving the 'wife' to raise the kids and has never returned to NZ...

The ol "One Drop Rule" as we say in the States. LOL! Show this guy to anyone in the world and ask them if he looks Polynesian and/or Maori, the answer will be "No". He's beyond "passing". He passed.
