I always loved that Will was the one who tried to accept this matrimony first. Like he's a young man but he was coming from a time where interracial relationships were starting to become more accepted. But there was still a struggle going on in both sides of the spectrum. It wasn't just whites accepting blacks. It was blacks accepting whites as well. And I always enjoyed how The fresh prince of bel air was willing to explore these topics. Breaking stereotypes. And exploring the ups and downs of living in a black family. It's shows like this that will always be timeless. And I hope many more people will get to see this show for what it is.

I love how Hilary (in her own way) didn’t notice that they weren’t talking about his height but that he was white. And her not finding him that “Tall” meant she didn’t see a problem with him. I wish they would have given Ashley a line when Will’s mom said she was against the union. I loved when later Carlton sang “Jungle Fever”
Hilary, despite her ditsy personality, arguably lived a more sophisticated lifestyle than her siblings and cousin. She was savvy enough to understand racism itself, as a Black woman; but it just went over her head that the rest of the family was speaking in code when they said "tall." Hilary was so materialistic that she probably felt that skin color should be the least of anyone's concerns when finding a lover, which is why the interracial relationships was no big deal to her. Carlton obviously had a ton of White friends from that fancy prep school, so he was desensitized to the idea of interracial romances in a way his parents weren't. Ashley, being the youngest, was probably extremely open-minded about interracial dating, and she just didn't speak up in that moment because Phil and Viv had trained her to be "polite" around her elders. Will is the logical choice for being the one (out of all the youngsters) to say the quiet part out loud -- because, despite Will's faults, he's just an all-around good guy, and he knew the adults were acting stupid but he wanted to try to smooth things over with charm and finesse.

I'm the black guy from an immigrant family who married a white girl from a rich family. We fell in love when we were both quite young (15). Her father liked me because he could talk math and science with me. Her mother did not approve and tried to get in our way. We've been married for over 24 years now. We lost her father a few years ago. Her mother is still pretty cold to me, but I'm always respectful so there is at least peace.
For those that are shocked by the prejudice in this episode, you obviously did not watch the entire series. Its a plot device, Will really tries to bring the family together and get to know Frank. In the end the family accepts Frank. The whole point was to show the audience how to break through prejudice and cultural barriers.
That is absolutely cool, but allow me to say though, that even with the best intentions, something like this would have never been allowed nowadays AS IT IS, let alone if the family was white and the dude black.
I don't think it's skin color as much as it is a cultural issue for most people. They don't want their kids and potential grandkids turning their back on their cultural beliefs and heritage. I could care less if my son marries a different ethnicity. I would care very much if he married someone who had no respect or care for American values, history and culture.

I grew up in India and I used to watch a lot of these American sitcoms with my mom, they were really popular and I remember these kinds of scenes used to make us both very uncomfortable and give us a very false impression about PDA in the US. I laugh about it now. Those innocent days, lol

What a cool clip, everyone has biases and they acknowledged it in a funny way, we're all brought up fighting our parents outdated social battles when the modern-day human, regardless of race, has evolved past the need for discrimination or pre-conceived stereotypes, love is love and its colorblind. The more I watch this show the more I'm impressed with its self-awareness, well-rounded moral messages and the genuine soul it has while still keeping the laughs coming along at a nice pace. Would be an amazing and timeless show for any kid to learn from.

As someone born in 2002, it's easy for me to forget that interracial relationships weren't as common or normal as they are now. It's weird and confusing seeing something like this, the 90's really were a different world.

Will's mom's side of the family aren't happy that Janice is dating a white guy. Philip Banks from the 1990s Fresh Prince of Bel Air is half black and half white, his mom is black and his dad was white. Phillip's wife Vivian is fully black so their children are 3/4 black. It's important to respect all races.
I love how Will just takes the proverbial gun and shoots down the elephant in the room, then the rest of the episode he gets to know the guy and see how happy his aunt is, and then that's all that matters. After the initial shock, he's like "ok, she's happy, headrests her right, they are in love" and that's all that matters
We need a show like this now more than ever. Too bad Uncle Phil isn't here anymore to help us out. The first (and real) Aunt Viv and Uncle Phil could teach and give over a message the way nobody else could.

I loved this episode; it had me laughing. I was a "tall' girl who was with a Black boyfriend for many years; my family didn't accept him at first but then they began to accept and like him and thought of him like family. Sadly, he passed away a week ago but I wouldn't change anything about our relationship. I cherish every moment that we were together. Like my dear Mom (may she Rest in Peace) used to say "Love is love, it doesn't see color."

For those that are shocked by the prejudice in this episode, you obviously did not watch the entire series. Its a plot device, Will really tries to bring the family together and get to know Frank. In the end the family accepts Frank. The whole point was to show the audience how to break through prejudice and cultural barriers.

What a cool clip, everyone has biases and they acknowledged it in a funny way, we're all brought up fighting our parents outdated social battles when the modern-day human, regardless of race, has evolved past the need for discrimination or pre-conceived stereotypes, love is love and its colorblind. The more I watch this show the more I'm impressed with its self-awareness, well-rounded moral messages and the genuine soul it has while still keeping the laughs coming along at a nice pace.
Would be an amazing and timeless show for any kid to learn from.

Being from 'the ghetto' has nothing to do with anything. Also if you contextualize it - These people grew up in the late fifties, sixties and seventies when racial relations were worse than they are today ( even though in 2021 we still have a looooong way to go).

I loved this episode; it had me laughing. I was a "tall' girl who was with a Black boyfriend for many years; my family didn't accept him at first but then they began to accept and like him and thought of him like family. Sadly, he passed away a week ago but I wouldn't change anything about our relationship. I cherish every moment that we were together.
