As a Demisexual male, one of my favorite things about a romance is the banter and connectionn that develops between the two leads.
As a fellow aroace I appreciate this discussion. I’ve always been very “anti-romance”. Lately, I’ve come to realise tho that it’s not romance as a genre that I dislike, but certain tropes and storylines, like insta-love and the lack of connection between the characters. A lot of the time there’s no depth to the relationship. Same thing with movies and tv-shows, where a character has a deeper connection with someone who’s “just a friend” than their romantic partner, but somehow romantic relationships should be most desirable relationship. Also, the dynamics are always sooo heteronormative, can’t stand it 😭
I think I have a similar problem I think I might be aro and romance always bores me or just makes me uncomfortable but I’ve read good romance before that didn’t make me feel that ways it’s just that most romantic books are not good

I’m excited for you to get into Daisy Haites! I think it’s a little bit of a rough transition because you’re following different characters (tbh I spent the first 50 pages missing BJ & Magnolia) but once I got into it, I ended up loving Daisy even more than Magnolia. The sibling relationship between Daisy and Julian is unmatched!!!

Magnolia Parks was described to me as Gossip Girl meets Taylor Swift. I love this universe. First go around, I did prefer the Daisy books, but I don’t know if that’d still be true upon reread. I’m reading Into the Dark right now and never have I related to Magnolia more.

Aaaah!! I had taken a break from booktube for like idk a year and Im so glad I came back to this video. I am also aro/ace but I am a romance reader and have always been a romance reader and honestly get bored if there isnt a love story in my books, so Im so curious and excited to see what this year of reading romance is like for you!! Side note.. I dont necessarily relate to what I read, thats never been a thing for me, so its not about relating to a character and their love story.. I cant say what it IS about cuz I dunno, but yeah, always loved romance despite being aro/ace 🤷🏽♀️

You might also like The Thirteen House by Sharon Shinn, the only book I've ever read where infidelity was a main theme and I was satisfied - and devasted - by the best possible conclusion. I'm aroace, but sympathized with everyone involved. It's been a few years since I've read it, but the protagonist and the LI share passion for the same causes and adventures, so I think it fits with what you said: the two characters have to be the same (equitable in power and action).
If you like the Found Family trope, it's strong in the Twelve Houses series, and gets stronger with every book (4 core books, plus one about a side character learning to live life again after the first four books): Mystic and Rider, The Thirteenth House, Dark Moon Defender (TW/CN for religious trauma), Reader and Raelynx, and Fortune and Fate.

Haven't read these yet but it kind of sounds like the dynamics in some Sally Rooney's writing (not the actual writing, i have no idea). You're acknowledging the problems but also they are such fleshed out humans. The relationships and flaws make them so much more real.
