More Important Than Power: Maximizing Impact

  • I'm often asked about how to increase punching power or kick harder, but I've found this to be much more important. Besides, you probably already have plenty of power, but you're just not digging your shots.
    Join our fight team: team.fighttips.com
It's a mix off accuracy and timing -- maximize the impact of your strikes by squeezing your fist (or ankle/foot) in an anatomically correct manner JUST before your strikes hits the target. It's finding that sweet spot of when to stay loose and when to tighten up for impact, and also when to stop extending, stick the shot, and start the reaction.
This is explained in detailed in the video, but it takes that 100,000 repetitions to really feel and do it without conscious thought.
If you wish to strengthen your hands, watch this video on knuckle conditioning:

Basic Science: When force applies to an area, it is more devastating if it is concentrated to a lesser surface area.
Example 1: It is also how you can lay on a bed made out of needles. If you lay on a ton of them, you dont get hurt. But if you step on a needle thats pointing up, your foot gonna be wrecked.
Example 2: If a normal gust of air would be concentrated on your belly button, it would go through it like a bullet.
Edit: Trying to make this as short and understandable as possible.

I think the extra power in those punches (even the slow punch) came from your momentum being in-line with your strike and lining up at the point of impact. Not from letting it linger longer. The distracting hits is just the weight of your arm transferring, where the heavy hit is your body's momentum impacting in alignment. Even in the slow punch, your core is moving up and your punch is lining up with your weight shifting in a falling motion.
Power can come from your back heal and move up with a sidekick or uppercut or come from down with a punch or left/right with a hook/roundhouse as long as your core-weight moves and your bones line up into the impact.
The "vulnerable" part about that is you have to commit your momentum, which takes longer. That's why the only way to land them is on a distracted, slowed or off balanced opponent.
Side note: The TKD people only talk about "sticking" a punch or kick to get the judges attention, to get more points. When I was in TKD they always talked about how to get the body shots to make a loud slap noise by hitting with a broad area and snapping back quickly. Or use the distraction of a heavy hit to let your kick linger so that the judges would have to give a point. Which is nonsense in a real fight. Always recover your momentum as fast as you can after an attempted heavy hit and never overextend it. If I see momentum coming at me, I cut it short and direct it to where they don't want it to go. Leave your leg sticking out like a crane like that, better hope your kick plastered them or you and the concrete are going to get acquainted real fast.

I do this a lot with my rear hand. I throw it with speed like a jab and then at other times, I wallop a heavy shot. McGregor does this as well quite a bit with his rear hand. A quicker, loose shot with the power hand. Of course, he didn't invent this technique as Ali was doing this back in the 60's and many more before him but he pioneered its frequent use. Lomachenko does it a lot as well.

Just like hitting a baseball. The squarer you are the more evenly power is transferred. Timing, accuracy, and squaring generates efficiency.

Good that it's been picked up, the difference between power and impact. Most people only practice developing power, or accelerating their limbs and then putting some weight behind it. Impact is much more important in my opinion and it's all about maximizing both time and intensity of contact with the opponent, in order to transfer that power into their body. Even when the contact only happens for a split second.

Your knuckles have two striking surfaces (make a fist and imagine a line touching each surface of your knuckles, you’ll see two places where you can strike with the middle finger’s knuckle being the tallest of the 4). Last three or the first two. I like really digging punches into the flesh by using two knuckles and pushing it in. By doing it, you’ll stun the affected muscles and lower their defense. The last three have a lot of impact. I usually use those in more of a whip like extension, usually with a cross, to the jaw in order to get a knockout. Body shots are a bit like stabbing something. Really put a lot of pressure on the impact site, and be sure it doesn’t land on a lot of surface area. The first two knuckles are what I use because they dig in and push the flesh inwards. Works really well on the liver and the intestines. Your hands are bludgeons. They’re pretty effective.
