    I want to ask a question that I can't seem to find an answer to anywhere on the internet. I currently have a Garmin epix and I really like it. However I'm considering the Apple watch ultra and I was playing with it in the store and I can't seem to figure out one basic thing.... During a strength training session after I finish reps on any given exercise normally on the Garmin watch I can hit the lap key and it will activate a rest timer. And then I can hit it again and resume the workout. And at the end of the workout when I stop it it will split the work time and rest time. How is this done on an Apple watch? I don't think there is a possibility to use a rest timer on the native built-in strength app on the Apple watch is there? So my question is what about using a different app for workouts is that a possibility and be able to program the side button on the Apple watch ultra to do rest timing?

    Awesome walk through. Agree, I would want the stats on my AW. Also 60 days of preceding HRV is too much. I started sleeping with the AW, and then had to wait 60 days for the analysis to make sense again (instead I bought a Garmin). If the many more HRV measurements setting you mentioned is activated, Athlytics should cut it down to Garmins period. And Garmin provide these stats without subscription.

      @@fitgearhunter I have been trying out Athlytic and the Training Today App (suggested by you) for weeks with AWS6 and FR955 on each wrist for weeks including sleep. While Athlytic is cool (love sleep score, the stress view etc.), Training Today removes HRV outliers, and with the Afib setting and sleeping with both watches, Training Today readiness score is now comparable to Garmin for me 👍👍👍 I LOVE that Training Today is also a native AW app not needing an iPhone👍👍👍 I am coming home to AW when I find the money for an Ultra.

    I have been wearing both the apple watch6 and my garmin 955 to sleep for a fortnight. The garmin always gives me a poor sleep score which has knock on effects on my training readiness and recovery. But my apple sleep score has been good, with good deep and rem sleep. With Athytic set to take my sleep data from Apple, my readinss and recovery are showing much better scores there. • @jonpageable
    @jonpageable Před rokem

    My observations. In the health app you can choose what you want to be displayed in the summary which is quite useful to glance at. I am concerned that having AF history on all the time drains battery. So I just activate it before I turn on sleep focus and then in the morning I turn it off as don’t need hrv being measured throughout the day. I have noticed my hrv varies a lot throughout the night so I question the usefulness of it? Yes I can go into the data and delete any outliers but from what I’ve read it’s much better just to take a manual hrv reading with the breathe app immediately upon waking. Curious to know your thoughts on that vs average sleep hrv which seems to be all over the place for me?

    • @susanr23
      @susanr23 Před 5 měsíci

      The AF history does not seem to drain the battery on the Apple Watch 9. Each morning I still have at least half the battery charge and it only takes about 15 minutes to charge it to 100%. From what I've read, you want to be measuring HRV frequently and especially during the night. I wear my watch during the night for that purpose (as well as to monitor sleep), and I always leave the AF history on. Hope this helps.

      I have heard that that is a good way to do a recovery reading. As far as wearing the watch, I take it off in the morning while I’m charging it and I give my wrist a rest. my issue is the effort score is based purely on heart rate max and how long you're in it for. The bike ride I did yesterday my average HR in a powerzone ride was 129....not very high...over 45 minutes. But my legs are done today...because I was doing intervals at zone 5 and 6. So although they only have HR to review and assess effort level it's not always going to be accurate in terms of how you feel. My average heart rate may well be "low" on effort over an hour but that doesn't mean my body isn't tired afterwards. I suppose that's the limitations of using HR only. I get it. It's just that I'm rarely going to be up at HR 160 or above for 45 -60 minutes each workout...other than triathlon and marathon runners etc. So for general workouts or hard bike intervals, not sure it's something you can 100% rely on.

    Really good summary, I’ve been using the Epix2 and previous Fenix’s for a while. I don’t need the 5 days battery really (ie Epix) so actually the outstanding HR & Sleep tracking on the Ultra is crucial for every metric and is much more accurate than Garmins. Apps like WorkOutDoors and especially Athlytic (as you say here) really make the Ultra compelling, especially if you don’t really need the 5 day battery of a Garmin. Also, FYI the Ultra battery has been 58-60hrs for me with workouts and all day use (and not in lower power mode) which is really impressive (for an Apple Watch) 😀

    • @Chris-gq8ev
      @Chris-gq8ev Před rokem +2

      Or, the other, cheaper, Apple watch options as well. Apple's strength in the sports watch field is it's sensors, which are uniform across the different models. The ultra has the greater battery, durability and multi band GPS; if you don't need those you can save a lot of money.

    • @Ajajambo
      @Ajajambo Před rokem +3

      SE model 2022 will be just fine, same sensor and accuracy as the AW8

    • @Chris-gq8ev
      @Chris-gq8ev Před rokem +2

      The SE is probably the best choice for health metric accuracy. The general rule is the lighter the watch the better the reading. Additionally, it will be the most comfortable to wear while sleeping.

    • @fitgearhunter
      @fitgearhunter  Před rokem +1

      Good points all around! And answering one of the other comments I would not worry about SE over regular eight for weight because it's super negligible and the Apple Watch sensor can definitely keep up with anything. The ultra may be very minimally but I yank my Apple Watch all over the place during a work out and it just somehow keeps up.
      I'm gonna do a comparison review for the Apple Watch Ultra and the epics as well, but for me the Epix is superior because of the all in one physiological summaries it provides, and I really do appreciate the battery life. If you go out of town for a couple days you don't have to be paranoid about anything .
      BUT - doing extensive testing again for the heart rate sensor and it is a far cry from the accuracy of the Apple Watch. If you were doing CrossFit or high intensity interval training like I do you you basically absolutely have to use an external heart rate monitor.

      Even though WHR and maybe Sleep tracking is better on the AW especially Calories is so off for me on the AW that I gained weight using it while maintaining a daily 300-500 kcal deficit. Calories on the AW works for standards like running or cycling and swimming. But do some sports that has natural low volume parts and it would overshoot by up to 4x for me. Make it Climbing, Bouldering or Skateboarding. Same for VO2max. It would constantly jump between 34 and 46 for me on the AW with a consistent pattern (up-hill intervals == low, VO2max while downhill runs or flat ground only run == high). Also Vo2max would go down significantly on the AW when I record an easy walk and go up when I record a brisk walk. Which is total BS and unusable data. VO2max does not jump by multiple points with one training for starters.
      Garmin has proven to be the way better watch for me when it comes to predicting recovery, efforts, calories, vo2max, aso. Hell it even tells me when I had alcohol the night before (yes it said: Looks like you drank alcohol the night before ...) and I was having one G&T only. Three weeks ago it started telling me that I am exhausted and should rest because I might get sick. Two days later I got a bad sinusitis and just now where I am a bit better it starts telling me that I am in Recovery. Also with the Garmin I just can trust the calories and keep my deficit while loosing weight and not suffering any munchies or anything because of depletion
      TL;DR: For the Garmin I don't mind sleep or HR not being 100% when the insights pulled from that data is so extremely spot on (at least for me). And if you are a serious sportsperson then even with the AW you use a HR-Strap nonetheless to have spot on data. And then there is no difference in HR.
      That said I really dig Athlytic and would love to test it but the data important to me still comes from the AW only that grants me a 2500kcal 3h skate session where I just stood or rolled around 50% of the time and realistically did not pass 1000kcal.

      @fitgearhunter  Před rokem

      Good question. The temperature aspect is really useful for sickness tracking, but otherwise all the main data can be taken from the SE. Thanks!

    Does Athlytic app work with other workout app or only with apple fitness?

    • @fitgearhunter
      @fitgearhunter  Před rokem +1

      Hey! I believe any app that feeds into Apple Health will upload to the watch, but the best results come from tracking workouts from the Athlytic app or the native apple Workouts app. Hope that helps!

    I am happy that i used this app for 7 days on trial mode. The reason i dont like to use this app is that it cannot read the heartrate data from a workout created in Strava (cycling with a Garmin Edge 1040 cycling computer with heartrate strap) and therefor the exertion info is not usable at all! This issue is not an issue from the app but from Apple that does not allow to transfer heartrate workout data from e.g. Strava to the Apple Health. So this app Athlytic does not see exertion as it relies on the heartrate data. You can however overcome this issue to track ALL your workouts with the apple watch. I dont use my apple watch when cycling so this does not work for me and i do not want to use the watch when cycling i have a Garmin cycling computer with maps and navigation for that.

    You guys are focusing on an app. The app just reads data from the watch. Everybody knows the Apple watch sucks at measuring HRV and RHR. All the statistics would be biased by the wrong input. As of today, two devices are measuring pretty well, the HRV and RHR: Whoop and the Garmin Fenix. So don't waste your time. Apps are just software. If you don't have the right hardware to measure, you are just talking of pie in the sky.

    Was thinking of abandoning my ultra 2 watch for a newer garmin fenix because I am not happy with the lack of data in the workout app. I really want something like the amount of data that the garmin app provides. I am excited about this video and have downloaded Athlytic coupled with workoutdoors and I think it’ll help me to give my ultra2 another chance and save me some money. Thanks
