I think next months will be a journey of many users and developers trying to take this raw gem and make it what sports users really want, so this video is not only welcome, I hope it will become the first of a series.
For sure! I'll have future videos as more and more apps pop up!
Agreed. I hope the action button gets some app love sooner rather than later
Despite the numerous negative reviews and high cost, the influencer continues to heavily promote the Apple Watch Ultra, blindly hyping it up to their followers as a must-have device. Crazy!
@@darma8159”how dare people like things I don’t like?”
@@ChaseTheSummitYes, Mt. Everest has WiFi and has had it for years.
I’ve been using Athlytic for about a month on my Series 6 and couldn’t be happier. I had been considering a a whoop and abandoned that quickly.
Oh I didn’t Athlytic had gotten so sofisticated it looks comparable to Garmin’s offerings. Workoutdoors is amazing once you set it up and the developer has already mentioned that is working on an update for the AW Ultra and another down the line to take advantage of the always on display and WatchOS 9.
Dear Chase the Summit, I know you pretty much own so many of its alternative softwares, Fitbit, Garmin, Whoop, and Oura.
Can you wear them for the next five days and see the correlation of the readiness score and sleep score between those. Then we will know how they can slack up.
Thanks for these two apps and your detailed description! I love my new Ultra as I also enjoy its Waypoint drop feature that can get you back to your beginning if the area is new to you...
Very useful advice, I have started using both apps and they're really game changers on the Ultra. Thanks a lot!
Have used Workoutdoors for while now and use Komoot to plot out a route and then export the GPX file. It's great and also for post-run analysis it's far better than anything else that I've used. I do quite like the 'Pacer' feature on the native Apple Workout app though
WatchOS 10 will be able to do a lot of new things! For many athletes one of the most important features is the opening of the API for 3rd party training programs like TrainingPeaks. With TP, many athletes realize the communication to the trainer and he creates the plans, for example, for running intervals. These had to be programmed manually or run with another app. This is possible from WatchOS 10. In addition, you can pair Bluetooth sensors such as watt crank or cadence.
Loved this video. Would really like to see another with more watch app recommendations
Thanks for the video. Really feel Apple is still lacking that ATHLYTIC APP feedback but I am sure it is just a matter of time... One question though; what is your current go to watch you are using for your training?
Athlytic is rad and Gary the creator is super cool and has helped me every time I have an issue with it. Nice work chase!
I use both apps and they have changed the way I use my Apple Watch. Love workoutdoors and it allows me to use a heart rate strap and power meter pedals with my Apple Watch showing watts and cadence on the screen. Awesome. Great video again.
So the athletic app can make use of training data collected by workoutdoors? (Finger hovering over purchase button for both…)
Wow, this is great to hear! The app already sounded good, but to be able to link my power meter to my AWU is a huge plus!
Do you need to start both apps for a workout simultanously? Or can the be linked?
One of Apple’s strong points is the third party app’s. I have a ultra on order so haven’t tested any apps, but one that I use on my phone for hiking is Outdooractive and its compatible with watch os. Don’t know if it logs all the sensors of the Apple Watch and so on but its a great app to find and plan hiking routs and other activities.
Perfect sir. I agree with this since my Garmin presented all this information in one simple app and in the past, Apple has lacked at putting all the information into one app. So I am going to try this out today on my run!!!
Thanks for this helpful video. I downloaded workoutdoors right away. AW Ultra is in order. Hope to get it soon. I have a AW series 5 now.
Thank you very much for the tips. The first app is wonderful. I wanted this for the Apple Watch for a long time, and this one is the one I was looking for so long.
Thanks for another great review. I will definitely check out WO for all the reasons you mention and one important one you did not pick up, 'cause you are too young! I wear reading glasses. I don't run with them. One of my frustrations with my Fenix6 is that I can only read the largest digit. Even worse, sometimes Garmin pops up a dialogue box before the run. I can never read it.
I am looking forward to trying an app I can see on a run. Thanks
I saw you hiking in the woods for ski touring. I was just wondering if the ultra works for it? Does apple have any workout mode made for it? I love ski touring and I was wondering if the ultra is any good for my winter hobby.
Great content, love the info. Deciding if I can trading my Epix for an ultra.
Thanks for the recommendations. I just ordered my ultra. As much-as I love the Coros watch I miss all the smart features of the WatchOS.
Can you tell me what smart features the AW has that Garmin, Coros etc don't have? I am genuinely curious to hear what these features are...
@@savagedriver1967 you can take phone calls and answer text messages, emails without the phone nearby. Essentially full internet access. While this might not seem like much you realize how valuable communicating on a watch can be. When I go on training runs it’s so much easier than having to answer family messages. Coros and Garmin try to have similar features but their solutions frankly are subpar and for example their messaging features only really work with Android phones and sadly the experience is not as well designed.
I finally got mine and came back to watch this video again. Thanks for the info. How does workoutdoors compare with Gaia?
Thanks for this. I’m thinking about the SE….but the ultra is growing on me somehow. We shall see!
I have been using WorkOutDoors for a couple of years now. Coming from a Fenix 6 - I was extremely disappointed in the native Apple Watches run app. WOD goes beyond even what Garmin has done with customizable metrics and screens.
The developer responds fast to emails and is top notch.
Quick note on the action button As I asked the developer - he does plan on implementing it, however apple has not yet released how to do so. Sounds like the API isn’t there yet for 3rd party so to use it
Can you use Strava beacon for live tracking like Garmin connect live tracking? So, can you use Strava beacon by itself and then start a hike on WorkOutDoors and then also mark a waypoint using the side button on the ultra? I love how my Garmin Fenix sends a live track to my contacts whenever I start an activity. Activity, live track, waypoint. Thanks in advanced! Love your videos!
Just Got the Watch. How do you make the action hutton both choksejr a workout and start it ?
Love mine its worth the $$$ played with the sleep mode and got up before the set time and the watch told me i got up early should it turn off the wake up
Do you have a tip how to use Workoutdoors useful for running? I'm trying for 1 week to find out with which setting (GPS, Health, Pedometer) I can display the current pace. With my Garmin Fenix 3 I had a field with the 3 second pace via GPS and that was great. Have tested with GPS and Health but the values are disastrous and not usable. The pace jumps within 3 seconds from 5:20/min to 6:35/min and that no matter what datafield.
Currently, the Apple Watch is only used to record a run, read pace values or even intervals are unfortunately not possible.
I just downloaded the Work outdoors app. Looks very good. I use Runkeeper which is great. Will compare. Have a 7 45mm. Thinking of getting the Ultra , just hoping it is better
Thanks for this video. This is exactly what I have been looking for as I try to transition from Garmin to Apple.
I love all the Ultra content! I have one and I am learning a lot from you..
Thanks a ton for showing us Athlytic. 👍🏼👍🏼 I’m loving it!
I got the athlytic app before your segment on it even finished 😄I go back and forth between my garmin Fenix 6 in white gold and my Apple Watch series 7. I really cannot decided between the two for most things. but now that this ultra is out, I MUST HAVE🤣it is truly the combination of garmin Fenix and apple watch, am I right?
I recently started using Athlytic and so far I actually like it better than my whoop
Great video. In addition to running, I also do a lot of dirt biking in the mountains. Would Workoutdoors be a good app for when we are on the motorcycles? Thanks!!!
Just bought the Athlytic app a week ago for my Apple Watch, thanks for reviewing it, I like it a lot, makes the Apple Watch much better as a fitness device for sure - great vid as always!!
How do you find the standard sport band on the ultra?
Heck yeah! Thanks for this! My Apple Watch comes in next month and I’m definitely going to use these apps.
Amazing video! I have just switched to an Apple Watch Ultra from a Garmin Fenix 6x and I'm really pleased I have found these apps to make it a better fitness watch. Thank you.
Do you know if there’s an app to provide training effect (aerobic/anaerobic)?
Thanks for the video. Just purchased Athlytic app. Looks amazing.
Great review! I’m an ultra runner that’s previously used both Garmin and Whoop for over three years. Made the jump to AWU a few months ago. Like you said, best smart watch. No question. However, I still find Garmin superior as an athletic watch. I was not surprised by this. I made the switch bc 1) I was tired of paying for Whoop’s subscription model. It’s recovery and sleep functionality is excellent but real time athletic data is terrible 2) I wanted the smart functionality of AWU. I’m willing to sacrifice athletic watch performance.
I like WorkOutdoors. It’s great. But they need Action Button pause-stop capability. Removing my winter gloves each time I stop to press the watch face is annoying.
I’m excited by the App Store ecosystem potential as AWU takes on Garmin, Coros and others!
I am sure you could create a Suri shortcut to make it work from the action button.
Insane amount of detail, very helpful. Thank you very much for posting this!!
will be nice to have a video talking about WorkOutdoors steup/tricks etc. BTW great content!
It would be nice to see videos on comparison between athletic vs whoop?
Just started using the Athlytic app. Game changer for the Apple Watch 8!
Athlytic fills an info gap that I have been looking for, for such a long time!
Thank you 🙏🏻
Jumped on Athlytic and i just want to thank you! I would never have known of that app. So amazing
Literaly an hour before I watched your vid I was trying to solve the nav issue and found out the workoutdoors LoL.. Made the purchase, good to confirm it's not a mistake.
Great video, ‘Training Today’ is a great Apple Watch app that gives you a ‘readiness’ score instantly based on your HRV.. I’ve been using it since it launched a labour 3 years ago and it’s very effective.. only a couple of dollars too from memory
Great video , best suggestion for someone who wants to move from garmin to Apple Watch .
Thank You for this Video. I just got my ULTRA and haven't opened the box yet. I decided to get the ULTRA basically to help me track my HABITS and record my thoughts easily which I don't get from my GARMIN watch. I've been looking for Aps that could bring the ULTRA closer to GARMIN and this video helps me a lot. Thank You and I am looking forward for more video re the ULTRA in your channel. All the best Bro.
Can the app also connect to sensors from Specialized e-bikes? I was able to connect my AW7 to my Garmin HR Pro but the watch didn't recognized any bike sensors.
Ok, found the answer: The app cannot yet connect to fitness machines such as treadmills, bikes, stair climbers etc.
Always give thumbs to your vids
Athlytic is little steep compared to free Garmin stuff. Workoutdoors makes sense though.
What I'd like to see is durability testing. Like dropping watches from 10 ft on concrete. Throw it into your spokes while riding. At these prices and having shattered screens on two apple watches I want some piece of mind i'm buying something durable this time. Fenix is basically a G-shock what is apple ultra exactly?
Thank you so much! These two apps look really useful
I had just switched to the Garmin Fenix 7 from AW7. I have to say I LOVE the Fenix. I saw a comment on another video where a guy did the opposite and switched from Fenix 6x to AW Ultra and loved it. I asked him his reasons. He mentioned WorkOutDoors so I came to this channel hoping to find you using it and wanted your opinion. I still have my AW7 and trying to decide which one to stick with! I feel like the Garmin is so much better with training. However, I feel like I’m abandoning my wife and friends who use AW and you can see all their activities and stay accountable. I know nobody who uses a Garmin 😢. It’s such a tough choice.
Don’t be sorry about the length of your videos. They’re packed with good information. I’m really eager for my Ultra to arrive. If it were t for a problem with my Apple Pay app disconnecting melgross credit cards, I would have gotten mine on sept 21st. Sigh, five minutes and I’m put back a month. Oh well.
I didn’t know about these apps, and I’m pretty excited by them. I’m getting them in anticipation, but won’t set them with my Watch 7. That’s the really great thing about Apple’s products. If they don’t do something when you get them, they will, somehow.
HellahGood did some pretty cool tests over on his CZcams channel. He even kept the Apple Watch Series 7 on for Leadville and it got through 60 miles! That’s crazy!
Based off of those tests alone, I think it’s possible that the Apple Watch Ultra could make it through a 100 mile race, with the right settings. Curious on your thoughts!
It would depend on your settings. If you’re willing to turn off the heart rate sensor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, always on display, etc… you might be able to pull it off. Personally though I’m not sure I’d want that anxiety 24 hours into a run 😂
The next features of Workoutdoors are AOD, Action Button and Navigation. The developer is coding hard to present these feature in the next time. Make a test end of this year and you will see what Workoutdoors is. The best App for Trailrunner and other sports.
Nice!
@@ChaseTheSummit Hey when i use the athyltic app it doesn't save my workout history any tips for this? should I use the workoutdoors app instead?
As a (temporary) workaround, you could map a shortcut to the action button, which starts the Workoutdoors app. A small guide on how to work with shortcuts: czcams.com/video/QICY3IXHk7w/video.html. (could be useful for other apps as well)
Using the Athlytic App, loving it.
Thanks for making this video. I just bought an Apple Watch Ultra and this is exactly what I need to use it for an had no clue what apps to use.
Athlytic is THE BEST. Been using it for the past couple of months and it's been such a helpful tool! If you're an athlete and use an apple watch you're silly to not use Athlytic!
One thing I've noticed since WatchOS 9, is that when sleep tracking is enabled - it won't measure resting heart rate during the night, just during the day. So if you are training quite a bit, you're RHR will be showing quite a bit higher on average.
Can you reset the 955 and then load in all info again, does that work?
Excellent observation of it's inherent drawbacks. Passing on Ultra for now.
Hi there! Very nice review . Did you notice anything strange in athlytic metrics ?? it gave me a 47,8 vo2 max when i did 3 activities within athlytic app , and apple watch gives me 34 vo2 max 2 months now… also these were indoor activities, and apple watch health app states that vo2 max is calculated in outdoor activities.
I've used Apple Watches for years. About 6 months ago I was training for Chicago marathon and I was afraid my Apple Watch battery wouldn't last. I am. a 6 hour marathoner. I switched to Garmin Forerunner 955. Big switch from apple. But after a bit of a learning curve, it was awesome for runs. Stable as can be. No glitches. No problems. Heart rate amazingly accurate for wrist. GPS awesome, even in Chicago Marathon. But after 6 months I got tired of trying to tell the Garmin to remind me to buy coffee, etc. I was so much in the apple ecosystem that, as awesome as the Garmin was, I missed the cellular capabilities and integration with other apple features that I had with my Apple Watch. I even was considering wearing one on each wrist, but figured that that was ridiculous and would screw up apple health. Finally last week after reading great reviews of the Ultra, I sold my Garmin and went back to apple. I can say I am underwhelmed at best. Yes I have reminders, calls, and other apple features again. But runs are so damned frustrating. HR is all over the place. Apple doesn't give me the summery of my days achievements etc in a nice and condensed way as Garmin did. Integration with other apps and services is terrible. I will stay with the Apple Watch because I am enslaved to the apple ecosystem with iMac, MacBook, iPads, and iPhone. But as a sports watch, I miss my 6 month affair with Garmin. The reviews of the Apple Ultra were, like so much with Apple, hyperbole and plain BS. I am barely more happy with the Apple Watch Ultra than I was with my Apple Watch 7. It is great for everyday life. But for running it sucks. And any review that suggested it is a great sports watch is BS. Garmin still reigns in that realm. But I'm happy I can still remind myself to pick up a loaf of bread after work with Siris help. But pain in the butt to try to get her to help me with running data.
I feel the same exact way about AWU as a sports watch. So I use my Garmin Fenix for training and AWU for daily living with an occasional workout.
@@theeverydayguyExactly.
Thanks a lot from Germany for that review 😊 even do here it’s a little over 30€ for the year of athletic but 5,99€ for WorkOutDoor 😎 installed both on my Apple Watch 7 works well. Apple Watch Ultra will be my Christmas gift 🎁 so definitely looking forward to it’s functionality. The output of information on athletic is awesome their for I canceled my Oura 5,99€ monthly since it’s performance (app) is very poor. In case still thinking about the fenix enduro2 because of it’s capabilities. But for all and everyday usage the Ultra with those apps will absolutely work for me. Thanks again and sorry for the lengths of text
Got the AWU as a Christmas gift and bought the workoutdoors app today!
My ultra-distance sport is cycling. On multi day trips I carry an Anker brick so battery life not an issue. (No real weight gain as I no longer need to carry phone)
This is brilliant, thank you so much!!! Exactly what I’ve been search for! (The work outside app)
lol, i have the #5 about to get #8,Can't Wait.
yr review was beyond amazing. Thank U.
All the best to U .👊👊
The Training Today App removes HRV outliers (Athlytic does not yet). Together with activating the Afib setting in Apple health, for more frequent measurements, AWS6 now compares to my Garmin FR955, wearing both simultaneously for weeks, including sleeping with them both on. 👍
I've dumped my Garmin fenix 6x and now am using the Apple 7 with both of these apps. Downside is the battery, so I may upgrade next year to the newer apple watch.
Thanks für the Athlytics tipp ... The App does not need an account and does not log or send any data! Very nice attitude in this telemetry-loaded times.
Just saw Mark Lewis explaining Work Outdoors a few days ago... Great to see you finding it too.
Funny, I was uploading this video and saw that he posted something about it too!
@@ChaseTheSummit my next video is on motorbikes and donuts 🍩 ….. just so we don’t clash again 😂👍🏼
@@MarkLewisfitness you know I love a good donut at an aid station during a race 🍩🏃♂️
Just watched your video, thanks for that, can you make an extra one to explain how to make a gpx file and import it into your watch/phone
I'll see what I can do!
Thanks, I think it will complete your video
I have used the Ultra for roughly 77 hours [start at 97% on 09/28/22 @ 07:00] with consistent usage (text, phone, compass, Wayfinder, Shazam, steps app & sleep) the battery is currently sitting at 17% [end 10/01/22 @ 00:18].
Do you have it connected to cell? Or just wifi linked to iphone?
Mine last 36 hours at most
you really nailed the app combo
This is the review I had been waiting for all along! There are way too many desktop reviewers nowadays so it's nice to see someone going out and testing this on 3rd party apps.
Question for those who already own the Ultra. I’ve tried the watch on at the Apple Store and it feels/looks great but it’s also very chunky. Is it really possible to get used to sleeping with this big watch every night? The Athlytic app looks soo cool and I would love to geek out over all the sleep/recovery data that it provides, but I just don’t know if I could ever get used to sleeping with a big watch on my hand and if you don’t sleep with the Ultra every night all that cool recovery data would kind of be useless. Curious how others deal with this.
Man, you made me spend money and I don't even have the watch yet. :-D Download both and can't wait to get my watch in a week. Looking forward to using the map for my hiking and biking
This is an older video now, but I really enjoy having Apple's Fitness classes for my home gym as part of a nightly routine kind of thing so I'm kind of looking for a companion to the classes and I already Apple's rings for basic step counting. I just don't need a $1300 peloton bike when I have a bike and access to the bikes at the gym personally so I think I don't need their online fitness classes for example..so I'm looking into getting the SE possibly for more tracking and not needing a phone for exercise.
1st FULL marathon, Baltimore 2022. I wished I had these apps. This will make my Ultra, ULTRA!
Could you please tell us what watch wear on your wrist?
Interesting Video, curious if you can download maps for the outdoors app also for countries outside the US. I am living in Latin America.
Maps are based on "MapBox" and "Thunderforest" You can check for coverage here: www.thunderforest.com/maps/
Right on thanks, I had workout doors but athlytic is exactly what I was missing.
How does Athlytic’s data do in comparison to the Whoop data?
Brilliant! Exactly the apps I was looking for.
Excellent thank you!! I’ve had Apple Watches for years and didn’t know about either of those.
im debating to get the ultra or not. I like apple health and it syncs data to my work app and allows me to get a accurate reading of my health / fitness. Also provides good info to my work studies. How well does coros, garmin or suunto syncs into apple health?
They sync heart rate, sleep, and other basic information to Apple Health.
Thanks for recommend
"Maybe they are terrible people. I hope not" - love it :) Both apps solve most of the problems of athletes (recovery mode, offline maps). And the pricing is ridiculously cheap.
After watching this I downloaded Athlytic and it was well worth the purchase
How was the battery life when using athyletic? I really appreciate this video, I am gonna pick one up this weekend.
Didn’t change much. I don’t think it does any computing on board it just relays the information from the phone app.
As I am looking for a new watch at the moment I have a (probably stupid) question: Suppose I use the apple watch ultra with these two apps, which features of a Garmin 965 would I miss as a runner and cyclist apart from battery life?
Great videos! Workoutdoors app is there a way to keep the display on all the time or a setting I'm missing on the apple watches? I am using another Apple Watch not the Ultra as of yet. When I run with the app on the display screens show and then eventually shutdown and show clock face. Any suggestions or tricks?
From what I've heard. The developer is working on an "always on mode". Right now it's not supported.
@@ChaseTheSummit thanks for that info! Appreciate it!
I can’t find workoutdoors now in apple apps? Probably it doesnt available in my country Malaysia yet. I can find athlytic 😢
you can add the backtrack feature to the action button, starts back track in seconds
WOD is amazing app…
Excellent review and nice discovery from the first app you reviewed!!!
Great content!
Very useful app overviews, thanks!
I used Athlytic earlier this year with an Apple Watch 7 and the score it gave didn't sound right compared with Garmin nor the way I felt. I think the biggest limitation will be that the Apple watch is not taking so many measurements of HRV, RHR, etc... Also, if you activate what you suggest to get more HRV samples, is Athlytic using that data? Like does the app know what to do with it? I'm debating myself if going Garmin or AWU. I had a Epix2 earlier this year for a couple of months and also an AW7, I mostly do road biking and wight lifting this days. I use a Wahoo bike computer so that also adds another complication 😬. I mostly want to track my recovery to know if it would be good to take it easy or push
If you enable the advanced HRV with AFIB detection the Apple Watch does take a lot more HRV samples which helps!
