- It is finally time to fully paint the van. Tara and I both worked hard and rolled on this paint with results im very impressed with. We used Durabak 18 mixed with Rustoleum paint.
Here is what we used:
1 Gal Durabak Smooth Medium Blue: amzn.to/3GwKLaX
I used Rustoleum bed liner spray paint but use Durabak 18 Textured Black 1QT should be enough: amzn.to/3quJ7Rq
Rustoleum Gloss Black for door handles, ect: amzn.to/33GdQC3
High Quality/Budget friendly Orbital Sander: amzn.to/3FwrQeY
400 grit 100pc sand paper: amzn.to/3FuZZM7
Similar paint brushed for cracks and crannies: amzn.to/3rfVfow
Identical combo paint rollers I used: amzn.to/3A2uoAs
Scotch Blue Tape: amzn.to/3rpuiPm
Scotch Fine Line Tape: amzn.to/3KisCjh
Plastic Sheeting (This should be enough): amzn.to/3Kfcb7v
Black Gloves: amzn.to/3zZtDYY

I love the music that really made the video even greater
Beautiful colors & exactly what I wanted but was skeptical to try. Now I'm going in..
Awesome job Chris!! We recently purchased a 1993 Astro in Costa Rica, am looking forward to giving it a paint job now, it desperately needs one!!
Im sure durabak ship out to Costa Rica! Making your ride look more appealing is a game changer. I wish you luck and if you need help do not hesitate to message me on Instagram @ Builds United
@@ImChrisDeDecker Sure thing, will send you a pic of the current state its in on insta! Needs an inside job too, but parts are difficult to come by as its not as common as in the US.
The color scheme is awesome 👌.
I'd do something similar on my white 2000 AWD cargo Astro but I have to remain stealth where I go. As a matter of fact when I'm sleeping in a sketchy area I put a magnetic sign on the side that reads: "ACME CESSPOOL & SEWER SERVICE" to dissuade thieves.
That is very smart. My van doesn't scream camper van, but it could definitely be assumed lol. Maybe ill figure out a way to instal some sort of budget friendly security system
Looks good dude. If you are happy with it that’s all that matters
Looks good👍 congrats🎊🎉
Heck yeah, Thank you David!
This van looks so good! Quality work. I hope you get more subscribers and views. Can you do a van tour soon?
Thank you Frost! My very first video on this channel has an overview of everything I’ve done excluding the things I’ve done since then.
Came out awesome! Maybe I’ll have to do this with my Astro 🤔
It was definitely a task, but worth it 100%.
What color would you want to go for?
I actually like the white on your van with the mountains. Perhaps doing the lower quarter with black and refreshing the headlight housing and grill would make a world of difference.
@@ImChrisDeDecker that’s actually something that I was going to do for sure. Would save a lot of time and effort while really enhancing the look of the entire van. If I was to paint the entire thing I would really like to do a desert tan, or an army green. Sweet build friend!
@@SeizeTheAdventureCo that’s exciting! Looking forward to seeing it! Blending in into the environment is pretty sweet.
Hmmm.... I hadn't thought of ROLLING on paint, if you want something thick and textured that's a great idea - You've inspired me.
I removed my plastic cladding from all around my Astro (if I knew you and we had talked before you did this I would have recommended that) because it traps grime and moisture which leads to rust...
Another great video - I really need to learn editing :D Keep up the good work
I appreciate it Michael!
I figured since this is a camping rig, something a bit more durable will be a better idea.
You mentioned the cladding before, and since I am planning to red to the black bottom quarter with a roll on textured by durabak, I’ll remove the cladding. Good idea
The work took 3 days and the editing took nearly 10-12 hours. It’s a lot of work, but worth it
@Builds United after my last comment I followed your link to the product to do some preliminary research - it looks interesting.
After I removed my cladding I had planned to coat that area all around with some sort of bedliner product in the same color as my van (white) BUT I know I want to change the color, possibly to a coyote tan - your product does come in a couple shades of tan... next video get some good shots of the texture left by rolling. From what I can see I like it - when you figure on a textured "bedliner" type of product then rolling it makes so much sense over trying to spray it...
Keep up the good work
The van looks good!
Thank you man!
Great job painting! That gives me an idea for my 87 Astro.
I really like the music choices in the vid
I spend a lot of time choosing the music. I would edit a scene to the music, then change my mind on the music and I would have to re-edit that same scene to the new music choice. Thanks for noticing!
thank you for these beautiful authentic videos :)
🙏
another great video! keep it up
Stupid question...Are you peeling the tape while the paint is still wet or let it cure first?
Peel the tape before it gets too tacky but not soaking wet. If you wait too long, the paint will harden and the tape will be extremely difficult to remove. If you notice, I have to use an exacto knife to pre-cut the edges of the tape to remove it so it wouldn't tear.
I just bought a '99 Astro and I'm thinking of doing this... how is it holding up?
Thanks for your vid's . I have a 03' Astro and it has the barn doors on the rear but now I can't unlock it, I insert the key and it just turns. What should I replace? It use to work fine.
could be two things
1. the cylinder is busted
2. the rod connected to the cylinder has disconnected. Either way, you would need to gain access to the interior of the door panel. I am pretty sure that is possible with the door in place. not 100%. Look up a video on removing the interior read door panels and go from there
@@ImChrisDeDecker Thanks
How many gallons of the blue paint did you use? Have you used that paint on a vehicle before? Curious about the durability. For the price- wow! What about a clear coat? Does it need one? I need to paint my Astro too… this is a huge game changer price wise. I need to go back and watch your paint prep video again. Love your videos!
Hey!
I used 1 gallon for the blue(which I have listed in the description, use the Amazon link or you can go directly to their website)
And I used the rustoleum pain for the black, which I am planning to redo with the black textured durabak in the near future.
You do not use clear internet bed liner. If you want a glossy finish like mine, get the smooth bed liner.
I previously used a textured red bed liner from the same company on my SN95 Mustang GT and I loved it. I didn’t keep it too long, but it seemed to hold up well.
I appreciate your support 😁
@@ImChrisDeDecker can you go thru a car wash after using this paint?
@@noragodley1270 this is one of the most durable paints. You could probably run through bushes and not have any scratches.
@@ImChrisDeDecker cheers! I am inspired and pricing this out for my Astro. Needed to know a gallon was sufficient.
Like the color blue and how thoroughly you prepped the van prior to painting.
I painted my Astro with Farm Implement paint and a 2” brush. Came out so good that I will do it again.
I should have spent more time prepping the bit of blue I painted over with he black bedliner, but other than that, I spent a long time prepping the van. This is my second bed lined vehicle.
I have always wanted to try paint a car that way, but way too scared it wont come out perfect. I thought about doing that instead of the bedliner.
@@ImChrisDeDecker thanks for replying! you see brush strokes but the IMPROVEMENT I made was more of a priority. In 1994 or 1993, Federal paint regulations changed in law so that’s why you see many paint issues in this year range. The tractor paint I used is like a m&m shell hahaha! Keep up the great videos as I am doing your brake/master cylinder technique, as I already plugged the rear ac bc of coolant loss.
Chris, did you re-tape in between coats? If not, by the 3rd coat you removed the tape before it hardened?? I’m getting ready to paint my Astro and I don’t want to mess it up! 🤞🏼
I did not need to re-tape but for sure remove the tape before it hardens. Let the paint get a bit tacky, then remove the tape. If you need to, like me, use an exacto or razor to cut the seam of the tape for easy removal. I wish you luck 🙏
How many gallons did u get to do this
Might of missed it in the video but how many gallons did you need?
I used one with a tiny bit left over. Keep in mind, I did not do the lower thirds with that blue so might be smart to get an extra qt, it an extra gallon and do an entire extra coat depending on what color your van and paint is.
How to unlock a Van Astro car brake
who is jon bradford? adds. = revenue. the 4.3 engine and trans are worth $4000.00.
CZcams ads are wild sometimes!
This is without doubt the WORST paint job I have ever seen. He took a $500 Astro and turned it into a $5 Astro.
Guarantee I could sell it right now for $5,000. But, it’s okay. It’s not for everyone 👍
