You've all been waiting for it and the time has finally come to painting the car. In this video, I paint my car using the Fuji Spray Semi-Pro 2 2203G. I'm spraying urethan paints and pre mixed base coat. The product lines I'm using are Valspar base coat and Sherwin-Williams clear coat. The paints were all what the paint rep suggested to use. So in this video, you'll see me finally painting the car and going over the car once everything has dried.

I’m glad you took the time to adjust your settings and find what works for you. The system is well worth the money for DIY projects. If a person can paint a car with rattle cans, then why wouldn’t this system work with a little patience. Trial and error is key. You did an amazing job and I hope you film your next session as well. Hopefully it inspires others to try this system for themselves.
Thanks man. Very true. This system is way better than rattle cans. I've painted my fair share of things with rattle cans. Rattle cans really suck. This system really does work well. Just need to be patient dial in the settings and take my time spraying. I think it would have been better if I had more airflow in my garage. But gotta make do with what I have.
@@BudgetGears try to invest in some more tip sizes. I'm using a 1.0 & .8 in my gxpc for bad & clear. You'll notice a huge difference between 1.3 & 1.4 tip
@@justinshields4216 I'll definitely have to think about investing in some smaller tips for the next time I paint something. It would be nice to have even finer atomization.
@@BudgetGears i was wonder about this paint system how reliable and lasting this machine can go. Its there any maintance or parts replacements??? Also using air comrpesor gun vs this machine which do you like
@@jaandel1 For me the system is quite reliable. It can last the entire paint job. The only maintenance required is cleaning or changing of the filters on the turbine, replacing the one way valves on the gun, which is usually ok for a long while, and replacement of the cup lid seal. If you're comparing guns, then there's different levels of air compressor guns vs this machine. Personally, I like the traditional air compressor guns, which is better than this particular gun. However, the gun is only as good as the air compressor system you run. If you don't have the massive compressors and water separator systems like shops do, the air compressor guns aren't very good at home on the small compressors. Now this specific machine model gun is pretty good for what it is, but if you decide to go for a different model like instead of semi-pro, you get the Q platinum models, the guns are very nice. Just like the traditional air compressor style. The Q platinum systems are very nice because you can adjust the air output etc. Turbine systems can produce jobs just as nice as traditional air compressor systems and are portable. As for the model I'm using, which is what's in the video, it's a great system for home use.

For some reason, someone's comment got removed. I used the 1.3 tip that came with the sprayer to spray the car. For primer I used a 1.8 tip. But a 1.3 tip can do the base and clear no problem.
Use a .8 with this Fuji system and you will get a flawless finish that doesn't need sanding. Sounds counterintuitive but trust me. The system just isn't powerful enough to spray undiluted paint well with the typical 1.3 tip. The theory behind using a .8 is less material but the same amount of air. You move slower but it lays it down very flat. Severaly underrated system.

For your 1st paint job you did a good job you get a great job. Recommend blowing the garage out the day before you paint to get a lot of dust out also wet your floor down which will trap some of the dust Make sure your passenger compartment if the doors are off or taped off and papered that could be a lot of your dust and fish eye issue wash the car really good with dawn soap and dry it and blow everything out and wipe it down to wax and grease remover.
Thanks! I did do all that. But still got fish eyes here and there. I'm thinking maybe something was floating around in the air etc. It is a garage so its exposed to all contaminants. Overall, it still came out really nice.

Yeah I'm not looking forward to polishing. Black cars are a pain to buff. But no choice. Gotta get rid of those dirt nibs and all.
Something else I might suggest you I've had really good luck like one night spray Hood the next nights. Or the next night spray another door do it panel-by-panel so you're not putting so much stuff up in the air and that helps out a lot too I think when you go to spray the whole car you got just all kinds of particles everywhere flying around
Thanks for the suggestion. I agree, a panel a time would definitely yield better results. Just it would waste more material and more time consuming. But taking the time to do it would definitely come out better.

The Q4 is night and day different than the Semi Pro 2! Skipping the the quietness factor, as it does not effect the results, going from a 2 stage to a 4 stage OMG.....DOES!
You're talking 5psi vs 9.0psi!!!! Double!
This is worth every penny. You can always make a machine quieter but not stronger.
That's why I like to Do It Outdoors under a covered canopy you get a lot better results it's more ventilation and all their milk particles go away so you don't get so much in your finished when it's in trapped in that garage like that those particles drop back down
Yeah I would love to be able to spray in one of those blow up spray booths with intake and exhaust fans going. Unfortunately, I had to make do with what I had. I'd say it turned out amazing still. People are always shocked when I say I painted it in my garage. 😂
Thank you for the video. I have only used mine to paint the front bumper. That was my first time painting anything large. The clear came out with a lot of fish eyes. I left it as is and it cured with time. Barely noticeable now. I'm about to paint my Honda in about a week. I have thought about just buying the Fuji Q5 Platinum but having two sprayers makes no sense right now.
The Q5 is a nice one. I wish I could justify buying that one too. I think you'd have to paint a lot to make it worth buying.
@@BudgetGears You are right. I bought the semi pro 2 about 2-3 years ago and I have only used it once. Having two of them after painting my car would just be a waste unless I sell them after. I hope I do a good paint job on my car with the semi pro. Thanks again for the video.
Not bad for your first paint job. For the fish eyes, I'm not sure what you used to clean it but I have found that wiping it with any thing other than a paint prep solvent Like naptha often will give me fisheyes. And I feel like you would get a better clear finish if you're gun was a little closer to the panel... Good job
Thanks! I used a lot of diff cleaning stuff like dish soap, then wax and grease remover, then isopropyl alcohol, then glass cleaner. The hood i believe was finished off with wax and grease remover only and since its such a big panel the fish eyes were so noticeable right off the bat. Fish eyes showed up all around the car though. I'm thinking its just contaminants in my garage. My garage is quite dirty and I do everything in there. No matter how I clean it or blow the dirt outside there's always stuff floating in the air. I know sometimes just hanging out in the garage, I'd blow black stuff outta by nose. So maybe particles were in the air. Thanks for the tips. The clear came out pretty nice except some areas where I ran it really bad. Ended up having a bluish tint to the clear in those areas. I think maybe the clear just wasn't that great of a quality clear. This clear remained rubbery when I was trying to fix the runs with a razor and I let it dry for weeks before trying to fix. It was good experience painting a full car. Definitely not something I'd look forward to doing. 😄
@@BudgetGears I do mobile paint repair in all sorts of environments, so I feel the pain. Lol. One time I was waiting a whole car in my garage and got fish eyes EVERYWHERE come to find out when I blew the car off with shop air it contaminated it with oil from the compressor. I have also stopped using lacquer thinner during prep because I get fish eyes every time. Also I have stopped using tac rags, because for some reason they give me fisheyes if I get the Wong brand , so now it's just microfiber and prep solvent...If you ever decide to take another project like this and want some pointers feel free to reach out to me.

Thinking about buying this spray gun once I start working again which I think will be next week after I go to orientation for the job. I have other auto supplies wanna buy though but I have bought a lot of stuff for painting the 3 years was at my last job. I know have spent thousands on auto painting supplies already though.

I did now, used the 1.5 tip the epoxy primer came out rough with lots of overspray, maybe without it was thick.
Also you have to learn hose control keep your hose up above your arm and use your other hand to keep it tight.
Hose handling was definitely something I needed practice with. These turbine hoses are big and heavy. One thing I had to keep an eye on was the hose kinking. It happened when I did primer. Spat a glob of primer on my spoiler. 😔
@@BudgetGears The unit I have is called an accuspray It is a plastic gun that is bolted together it's lightweight cup is on the bottom I've had it since 1990/91. I sprayed with it a lot. never had any issues with it. I love the HVLP system. All I can suggest is that you practice and Prep work needs to be clean make sure you don't touch it with bare hands and make sure everything is masked up. I've tried using the alcohol before it did not work I was doing bare metal brass,aluminum, copper things like that. huge panels and I would hand polish thing and wipe it down with a clean towel and spray right over it. Painting automobiles and motorcycles never had an issue with fish eye I know that in a garage setting you end up with more dust in there you really have to blow it out and Wet your floor. they also have a 3' to 5' flexible hose or a whip that you can screw onto the end of the hose makes it a lot easier to hold onto the hose you just still have to watch out for kinks in your main line. had an issue with fish eye.
Great job, should be proud, the car looks great. Question, being it's a turbine with hot air did you use a slow, medium or fast reducer with paint and also on the clear?

I believe they were medium reducer. The paint was premixed at the paint shop. So base was already ready to spray and the clear was a medium. The air wasn't actually that hot for me. I had a lot of stop sessions so it had enough time for the turbine to cool down. I painted during spring and in the morning when it was not hot.

Got the Fuji Q5 platinum turbine sprayer coming soon but already painted my truck just want to sand the orange peel off with my orbital sander with 800 grit and then put clear on again. But probably won't get it to next week or the week after if like it will get one more but rather just get another spray gun to use on the Q5 for basecoat but don't see with the spray gun only
The spray gun only is quite pricey for the fuji systems. I was thinking about 2 guns before and then settled for just getting the tips needed and cleaning the gun instead. If you clean out the gun well, it'll be fun to use to spray all the stages. But, its definitely easier to just switch guns instead of cleaning it between stages.
@@BudgetGearsbut got the Fuji Q5 platinum because the air compressor use is small. But I saw videos of people using two air compressors for more air. I just got another orbital sander recently a 5 inch from Tool Lots but still the turbine sounds better than hooking up to a air compressor saw multiple videos of people getting great finishes on a vehicle when using a turbine sprayer. I got mine from a Asian site though because not spending the high price like the ones I saw online for 1,000 I wouldn't spend that much on a spray gun that is much as a pretty good air compressor.

You need to get a flexible whip hose so its light and doesn't tangle too much
I used the original hoes and put 50feet flexhoes from Walmart the air was cold..laid down awesome 👌 semi pro2

When you first saw the fish eyes on the hood i would have stopped there and cleaned the car really well before going any further what's a little more sanding on the hood going to hurt. Do you think the paint was contaminated for that many fish eyes everywhere on the car? When you say drips did it drip from the gun or its runs from spraying? It looks awesome though, rhis is the first video I've seen on my mission to buy a turbine spray gun or air compressor and gun.
I think it was very hard to see the fish eyes at first because the first coat was a lighter coat. By the time I notice the fish eyes, a lot of the car was already painted. It's kind of tough to clean everything off at that point and since it's painting in a garage with bad airflow, the garage was fogged up pretty quickly making it tough to see. I think the fish eyes would have been manageable if I knew what to do at the time it happened. I don't think the paint was contaminated. It's possible my garage air was contaminated. Or maybe it was because I didn't clean well enough. Not really sure. It could be many factors because I do lots of different work in my garage.
Drips is just running from laying it on too thick. It was kind of difficult to not run certain areas. Lack of visibility and lack of maneuverability made some areas tough to reach. I think if I had the car raised higher up off the ground it would have made it better, but my jack was already at max height. I think if I were to redo, I'd maybe do it in more sessions instead of trying to cram it all in a couple sessions.
@@BudgetGears Question I see these guys on CZcams wet sanding then buffing out a shine , does the shine wear off and need to be buffed again?
@@angelanuccio2167 The clear coat always ages over time. You may get swirls in it from washing etc. So yes, it will likely need to be buffed again. But after you wet sand and buff, it should remain shiny for a long while. Most painters won't prefer to sand and buff though. Buffing usually leaves holograms. If a shop does the work, they'd usually wet sand and clear again instead of polishing.
Good video - I ran into it doing some research for the Semi-Pro 2. I saw the last video of this series and the final result looks good! How do you feel about the Semi-Pro 2? How I'm debating between this or the Mini-Mite 3.
Thanks! I think the Semi-Pro 2 is a good budget system. It does the job. However, after using the gun, I don't like how the gun is. I prefer a more traditional HVLP style gun. The Mini-Mite 3 is a good choice because the gun is much better. I don't do a lot of painting, but will have other projects where I'll be using the Semi-Pro 2 again, but if I were doing a lot of painting, I'd invest in Q5 because it puts out much more air pressure and you can adjust the pressure. But overall, the Semi-Pro 2 is a great system for occasional painting. I'd definitely recommend a better system like the Mini-Mite 3 for the nicer gun.

Hi man, very nice job you did! I was inspired by your video to bay a Fuji spray gun, and try to paint my 03 Toyota, but the results wasn't so good as you. The problem was a clear, I ended with a lot of texture, and I was obliged to sand a lot. What type of clear you have used on this project? How you set your gun? Thanks for helping!
I used Sherwin Williams finish 1 clear coat. Around the end of my video I talk about gun settings. Its not something I can explain but I showed it around the end. The temperature and humidity also plays a role in how your clear will lay down. I had bad orange peel in some areas too. But its mostly cause of my technique. Need to lay it nice and wet. People have said they got better results with a smaller tip. You can try that as well.

the heat from the turbine dosent bother the clear as bad as it dose single stage paint my unit got to hot it was a large job.
I am just a furniture refinisher, but I can assess a great job when I see one… ♥️♥️♥️ I have the semi pro and I LOATHE that hose… what would you suggest as a replacement?
I also hate the hose, but I haven't actually changed it to anything different. I know Fuji does have 6ft flex hose that should make it better. You attach it to the bulky hose, but I haven't tried it. I've also read that some people have modified high pressure garden hoses to work with the spray system. I haven't tried it myself though. My concern is if the air pressure would be compromised if changing to a garden hose. I can see it working, but I wouldn't want to sacrifice air pressure.

I feel like I've got mine laying down single stage color pretty good but it was impossible with a 1.3. I had to go to 1 before it would lay down properly.
I wonder if that's just the difference in our paints.
Maybe the difference is the single stage vs my base and clear. I hear it's a lot more difficult laying down single stage properly. I've never tried single stage using this systems, but I can image a smaller tip would definitely make a big difference for spraying both single and base and clear.
This job looks great....im considering this system ...i use a devilbiss pro lite wich is great .. would like a system that only requires 120v
This system is pretty cool. Its nice and compact, which is what I like. The semi pro is the entry level system, which did a great job, but I think more premium model like the q5 would yield much better results. I would love to get my hands on a better model, but the semi pro is good value. 😁
I have the Fuji Q4 Gold which is a 4 stage turbine, and lay auto paint down as good as any compressor style set up but costs THOUSANDS less.
The Semi 2 is a 2 stage which is like 5 psi. the 3 stage is 6.5, but the 4 stage, OMG, is 9 psi! This make it so much more of a value. It's worth every penny to go to a stage 4. Btw....a stage 5 is only 9.5 psi.
And of course theirs the quiteness factor. That's what the "Q" stands for in the Q series. Honestly, it's just a series of bends and sound damping materials that can be accomplished for a LOT let than what they charge for in the Q series. I purchased mine used so I essentially didn't pay for the quieter machine.
Honestly, if I was buying new, I would go for a stage 4 turbine to get the higher PSI, which will give a better finished product. Then, if noise is an issue, there are plenty of YT vids showing how to quieten down the machine.
In the end, this video shows the importance of doing a test panel with the PRODUCTS and in the ENVIRONMENT you intend to do the final painting with and in.
Mixing 0.5 quarts and test spraying the hood first, then waiting a day for results, would have saved so much time and money than just going for it on your/his first paint job!
This is expressed in every DIY vid out there but the DIY guys skip it.......WHY????

Nice job man! You are giving people like me inspiration to use the system to paint my own car later. Now, could you speak about the mixture you used for the base paint (slow, medium, or fast reducer). Saw the last video of someone mentioning to use slow reducer cause of the heat produced from the system. Overall, great explanation and keeping it real! 👍🏾
Thanks man. It worked great so I'd say use the system! So my base was already reduced by my paint shop but I'm pretty sure it was a medium reducer. As for the clear, it was a medium reducer. I would say use whichever reducer is best for your environment. When I sprayed it wasn't overly hot in my garage. Temperature wa about 28 degrees Celsius. And the system does produce heat but when I was spraying, I didn't notice the air being overly hot or anything. But definitely take the time to let each coat flash off. That would be good times for the system to cool itself off too. I had to refill the gun often so I had to constantly turn the system off. So it didn't really get hot for me.

Is it just the dust that is causing the fisheyes , or is it responsible of the fuji system ?
Thanks man! The fisheyes is caused by my garage. The system isn't responsible for the fish eyes. I do all kinds of work in my garage so if any contaminant lands on my panel it'll potentially cause fish eyes. I cleaned quite thoroughly too, but I can't control what's in the air.
I had no airflow too. Having good air circulation would have helped so much.
Would the mini mite 5 do better ? I believe it’s a higher psi and a couple more fans.
Oh yeah of course it would. The semi-pro 2 is really the budget entry level turbine sprayer. Any of the models above it, would do a way better job. Even the gun design is way nicer.
I dig your work bro. I was wondering what overspray was like spraying in a garage and how you dealt with ventilation and such. Did you crack the garage door open between coats? And were the neighbors a concern? I plan on doing similar work in my own garage. Just curious.
Overspray was very bad because it literally got everywhere. So move everything or shield up everything you don't want overspray on. Ventilation I only had the garage door open with 2 exhaust fans with filters taped onto them. I recommend getting as many fans as you can fit under the garage door. I blocked off any other openings with cardboard. No concern from neighbors since they couldn't smell anything. My 2 fans worked but it took a while to exhaust out the chemicals. If your garage is attached to the house like mine, do not open the door connecting your garage to the house. It'll get all the toxic smell into the house. Trust me it happened to me. So I would exit the garage out the side door while I wait for the flash time. I didnt open the door fully at any point since you'll let more dirt into the garage and risk ruining your job. Its dusty enough already.
If you're gonna use a similar respirator like mine, use some toilet paper to shield the cotton filter. The toilet paper will catch the overspray and allow for your filters to work longer. Otherwise, they'll get clogged within the first few min of spraying.
If your garage has a window for air intake, then that would be best. But mine didn't so I only worked with exhaust air using 2 fans.
Which particular Sherwin Williams Clearcoat did you use on your project?
I believe it was the Finish 1 clearcoat that I got.
i just found a really messed up flaw with the fuji simi pro paint system the turbine unit heats up the air in the hose when you try to paint a hole car makes the paint get a shit load of orange peel so pissed Larry B
I think I remember the hot air being a common thing for all turbine systems. The air wasn't bad for me. I did paint it around spring and I did shut off the spray many times while refilling the gun or between coats. It gave it a lot of time to cool down. But I also didn't do a full car since space was so limited that I couldn't paint all the pieces in 1 session.
Have you used the semi pro 2 for other projects? Still like it?
I haven't used it for any other projects yet. I do have a bumper and other things that I want to prep and paint, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I think the semi pro 2 is a good system on the budget. It's decent for the occasional project. If I'm consistently painting, I'd probably go with a more higher end model like the Q Platinum series. Everything in the Q Platinum series looks better especially the gun. But I think any of the series above the pro series has better guns.

How long did a cup last before you needed to refill? What size is the cup?
The cup is 400cc. I refilled often by just turning off the machine and checking my cup. I don't remember exactly how long the cup lasted before topping up. I think it lasted a little more than hood and 1 side of the car. I filled up often to keep the cup full when I sprayed the bottom area of the car since I had to spray at an angle.
so i had to break the car into parts wait at least 45 min for the turbine unit to cool down.larry b
I would check your air filters for clogging.
The Fuji system shouldn't heat up like that. That's very much the entire point of the system, and shouldn't heat the air in your hose...

why did you go though the hassel removing windows and all for a $3000 car ?
I wanted to paint the door jambs and all that. Wanted to make sure I got all the areas that needed painting. It might be a cheap car, but I wanted to do as good of a job as I can myself. The finish turned out very nice.
Will it do Kandy paint jobs
Thats a good question. I dont know the process in painting kandy, but I don't see why it can't. Painting is all in your gun settings as long as you have enough air.
Candy paint is very thin. The problem is the thicker metallic flake base coat. I’m wondering if these turbine systems can spray a metallic flake base coat.

@@bens6423 Valspar paint and Finish 1 clear. Primer I used spray max 2k epoxy and Dominion Sure Seal DTM. No additives.

@@bens6423 Yes. I would not suggest just copying me. You should talk to your paint rep and have them recommend a package. My paint and clear package was a recommendation from the paint rep. They know what's compatible etc.

Your still putting on to much paint, light first coat are it's going to fish eye, you might want to step down your tip size.
With a turbine all you need is a 1.0 tip
