Hayden Primary Chain Tensioner Install ✔

  • How to install a Hayden primary chain tensioner. This is on my 2009 Harley Davidson Road King to replace the factory ratcheting primary chain tensioner, which had over 60,000 miles on it. I experienced kind of a whining sound coming from the new tensioner as the chain links settled into a groove in the new tensioner shoe for around 1,000 miles or so. Barely noticeable now.

    Next on the agenda will be replacing the weak engine compensator. In later years Harley Davidson discontinued use of this type and instead installed the Screamin' Eagle version on the new-at-the-time 96 cubic inch motors.

      Thanks for sharing that info! I'm still using mine, just with 3/16 gap instead of the recommended 3/8 gap, and only the larger spring as I left the skinny one out because with it in at the lesser gap it felt too tight.

    Most people dont know that the stock auto tensioner has two springs. One gives some slack, the other moves the ratchet. So the ratchet is like those shims. Just check it occasionally to make sure nothing strange happened and it ramped up too tight.

  • @aboutmyfathersbusiness8324

    I believe if you have less than 3/8ths its probably due to new chain or new bike. Shims are for stretched chains. I also think they should put in the update "no more than 3/8ths. My chain still clunks but its probably easier on the shafts than the stock ratchet style.

      Personally I believe that belts at the time we're probably no longer considered reliable. Maybe the rubber they used was too soft or crumbled over time? Also there's the worry of getting rocks in it.....yeesh

      @martinwall7297 Před 2 lety +1

      to answer your ? did you install it or was it a factory belt. HD. used a belt in the sturgis dyna model. they stoped because you need to vent the primary well to rid it of heat, detrimental to belts. also the main crankshaft seal in the primary needs lubrication to last and keep oil in the engine. belts are run dry.

    • @contact4mwy7
      @contact4mwy7  Před 6 lety +1

      Big Rig Rich Jumper yes, it seems to be a quality product for the price. It will whine for the first 500 to 1000 miles, but it gradually goes away to the point where it's about the same sound as the stock unit. I do wonder if it interferes with starting the bike sometimes due to its spring bouncing up and down as the clutch pulls the chain to turn the motor over. I haven't seen anyone else mention that though, could be just me.

    • @contact4mwy7
      @contact4mwy7  Před 6 lety

      Someone may correct me if I'm wrong here, but I do NOT believe the Hayden primary chain tensioner will bolt right into your 2003. The Hayden unit was mostly developed to replace the factory automatic rachet-style primary chain tensioner on newer motorcycles. Just make sure your chain play is set to factory specs and the condition of the plastic shoe from time to time, Scott, and you should be good to go!

      Hey Mark thanks for cutting in and I know this is an old thread.
      I stayed away from automatic chain tensioners,, if you go over one heavy bump,, especially on a Softail,, you go over one have a bump and it will ratchet it right up,, nothing worse than a tight primary chain..
      Even Baker,, the most expensive
      But it's all up to preference,,
      Stay loose 🤙

    • @contact4mwy7
      @contact4mwy7  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes, there is a gap underneath the primary chain tensioner to allow fluid to move back and forth, or to be drained for the most part.

    • @contact4mwy7
      @contact4mwy7  Před 5 lety

      What was the gap measurement with the two spacers? I tried to make the chain touch the top of the inner primary with 3/8 gap and there wasn't enough slack in the chain to do that before the chain tensioner bottomed out. I uploaded a video called Another Source Of Primary Noise, which shows how the clutch basket can make a knocking sound, could that be it? Mine makes this clatter between shifts or at times between slowing down and maintaining speed.

    How does that Hayden chain tensioner know how to preset the tension,, on a cold engine there should be 5/8 to 7 / 8 engine,, hot 3-5" of play ?

    • @contact4mwy7
      @contact4mwy7  Před 6 lety +1

      The tension is pre-set by both the double springs underneath the shoe, and the gap between the shoe and the baseplate. Shims are provided if needed to shorten the gap to the recommended 3/8". I will be uploaded another video which explains it better and offers a bit of a modification for smoother starting and less pogo-stick decelerations.

    Harley-Davidson does not need to still be using a chain primary drive system at all. A gear drive primary is smoother and less maintenance and HD know it to and they will go to a gear drive sooner rather than later trust me. It’s a legacy item that outdated with the chain drive.
