Tony Kakko is a real poet, similar to Tuomas Holopainen, no wonder they are good friends

What a rich tapestry of melody and emotion. Both of the tracks White Pearl pt 1 and White Pearl pt 2 are absolutely incredible mini-epics. They don't get the attention they deserve. All-time greats. Part 1 more for the story, part 2 more for the melodies. (btw- The live version of part 1 you reacted to, and others have reacted to, skips a stanza for part 1's plot. *Thank you for catching that in your review and taking it into account!*)

Great storytelling. That first stanza is definitely a very important setup for the story. Thanks for watching.

    Thanks for the reaction and reflections on it 😊 this is what Tony said in an interview about this (and other) song;
Elise: And there is "White Pearl, Black Oceans Part II", as well. When you write those songs, do you think "oh I want to write follow ups"?
Tony: Absolutely not. It happens if it happens, basically. "White Pearl, Black Oceans" has this special place in the hearts of many Sonata Arctica fans: there are fan-fictions written around it and people have said "it should make a great movie", there are tattoos on people so it has never faded away and we have played it live as well. This idea has slowly developed to go back there also artistically, maybe write something to expend that story somehow, or continue it but at first I thought "continue what? They died!" (laughs) It's like on Titanic if Leonardo Dicaprio was suddenly swimming ashore. (laughs) But that happens here in this Part II. They are both alive. Of course a lot of other people have died. This is my personal Titanic. It was on April, I think, that I posted something on Instagram and said that I was working on "White Pearl, Black Oceans Part II" and immediately people started to comment "I want to hear that!" and I thought "good going, Tony, and now I have to really do it". But I did that on purpose to force me to get into it and get it done. I needed that kind of motivation and challenge also. I enjoy challenging myself and finding new ways to approach my work and this required it, in a way. I had to go back into a story that has a strong meaning for many people and I had to be up for it both musically and story-wise so it demanded a lot. I think pulled it off pretty ok. Mood wise it's much mellower than the first part but it continues directly where the first part left off and there's this thematic that continues as well. I think the whole thing binds together well. And maybe you have a happy ending there as well in the end, everything is fine. It's like going back in memory of that time when people go aboard that familiar ship and it crashes and a lot of people die except that one person who thinks it's partially his fault and everybody blames him for what happened and although it's not necessarily his fault, he drowns himself...but he doesn't drown.

Thanks for this request and for sharing this info. Maybe the worse punishment is surviving and living with the consequences.

I enjoy your reactions and it’s great to have focus on the lyrics. Tony writes so beautifully that they deserve the attention. I think you’re missing one element of this story. The lady he had that one night of passion with got on White Pearl in the morning, ”She had found the sails, for the following night The town, for her, was getting way too small” She was pregnant to her husband who maybe wasn’t a very nice guy because he later beats up the lighthouse guy. So in part 2 she is the lady who was saved from the ocean, “Without a name to tell, afraid to stay” because she’s probably scared of the husband who attacked the lighthouse keeper guy and probably wasn’t best pleased with the cheating wife. Lighthouse keeper guy then searches for her and finds her and they live happily ever after far away from the sea. Some words are repeated from the 1st part and clearly point to the lady being the same lady like “I see her eyes, like a dream” and “brand new me” That’s what I think anyway. I love Tony’s stories!

Thanks so much for sharing that missing element. It does add a lot to the story.

the parts you wrote are made of metal instead of wood, and it is played with a plastic mallet instead of a felt mallet

Great reaction! Loved your thoughts on the lyrics and the fact that you took some time to discuss them. Consider that this song is written like 12 years later part 1, so for us long date fan part 1 is the only story that existed for a long time.
My personal interpretation of the story is that suicide (part 1) is tragic, but in a sense is an easy way out, because if you die you don't have to carry the burden of your actions. So in this part 2 the "grace of the ocean" doesn't allow the man to die. Instead he has to make peace with his demons and find the way to start a new life.
So in the lyrics the man is brought back to the shore, where he finds himself with this "lady without a name to tell" (probably a clandestine) that survived the shipwreck. So he feels the pain of the people he killed and he know that he no longer has a home ("I've become a true blight/I huddle in the daylight/Banished by my townsmen/With blood in my hands"), but the fact that at least one person is alive gives him the strenght to overcome his sins. So in the end they both run away on the stolen steed and begin a new life on the far-side of the sea, and finally the man finds peace.

Thanks so much. I like that interpretation a lot and definitely makes a lot of sense! And also makes for a good addition to part 1.

in this case it is a glockenspiel, the metal version of a xylophone

I can only say that I really enjoyed development of the music from the start to the end and all musical instruments as well. I appreciated your reaction of this 2nd part. Thank you!

I usually don't like forced happy endings either. I don't think, however, that in this case story is ruined by the main character's survival and the reunion with the woman from the first part really.
I can't explain why though. Perhaps it's just the way Tony delivers the story and imerses one it. I still prefer the first part when it comes to lyrics, but I think second part is also done quite fine.
Also, Sonata Arctica is not really known for happy endings, therfore maybe I just like when they give some of their characters a bit of mercy for a change. xD

Now thats a great point you make at the end. Since they arent known for happy endings its a great change of pace and fans might like that.
Now that makes me think of it entirely different 😄.
If i was more familiar with their music before this, i might have felt the way you do.
Thanks for sharing that! You offered me great insight.
