I am so grateful, every dang day, that there are people on this planet like Scott who are WAY smarter than me... We have last year's model Mod Bar and it's amazing. Aside from making amazing coffee it's beautiful and almost every person who comes in here wants to know about it. Even people who don't really care about coffee are curious about it. Being able to do the dog and pony show for customers is huge. They can see all the magic happen and I think there's a lot of value in that.
Maybe I'll upgrade to this at home and get rid of the Gaggia Classic 😂

I feel like the modbar style machine adds to the theatre of it all, with guests being able to see the craft and prep. Sure, it means we can't hide behind the machine on our off-days, but i feel like it'd add to overall guest experience and appreciation. Sounds right up C&C's street :^)

Hey Chris, another great video! It's fascinating learning how much the technologies have advanced over the years. The coffee industry isn't at all behind other fields!
On the other hand, it seems we're slowly but surely getting to a point when an experienced barista is no longer needed. Right now, there's practically a proper-tamping skill eliminated since we have our coffee distribution tools and calibrated tampers etc... I've worked with a grinder where you insert your PF and it grinds, tamps and makes it all good-to-go for you... Now, these guys from Modbar are bringing their mathematically-modeled machine that can basically predict the future of your shot based on data from the first second of the extraction. It gives you the perfect shot "without having to look at the scales, without having to wonder. It's just there and it works."
I mean, don't get me wrong. All of this is great and I love it! When I was in university I used the internet for almost everything and I'm just so happy I didn't have to grow up 50 years ago and read hundreds of book for the same thing. I love the fact that everything is easier for us these days!
I just wonder how the coffee experience is going to be because soon you walk into a coffee shop, order an espresso and all it requires is a button to be pressed, you know :)

I've never seen a shop have proper ergonomic height for their machines, and this is something you could easily have if you mounted either modbar or a linea (or whatever) on a movable high low platform that could adjust about 2 feet up and down. The modbar is a clean look that I like, but I feel like baristas enjoy having a bit more separation, so you get good and bad with both systems. I wish the modbar pourover wasn't so expensive...I looked into purchasing one instead of a fetco and on price it's crazy.
This looks great, the video flashed past the loading of the Head with grinds, didn't see if they have also designed a cool grinder ? … great to see that passionate people are driving cool design.

I love the modbar look -- the only problem I have is that the working height is usually a few inches lower than a typical machine. Your drip tray is (obviously) counter height, which is a few inches shorter than an even Linea PB with no legs and quite a lot shorter than the Starda.
I'm not a barista, but a few I've talked to have shared similar comments. For me, I'm a fan of the extra tall legs on my LMLM, it makes the working height that much better. If I were building out a cafe or cart, I'd really have to think about how to handle the height aspect.

I absolutely hate the strata EP in high volume - the mod bar was essentially a lower build quality EP and it was bad.
The new strata abr and av is amazing- so if the build quality is there then it’ll actually be worth while to have that dream minimal set up.
