“I thought I had a backache, and I almost died,” Smith tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “The doctors and my friend saved my life.”

That’s a weird and scary disease. I wonder how she got that.
I had this disease 42 years ago, and it settled on my left femur. I was also hospitalized for a month and had to relearn to walk. They think I may have stepped on something outside (I was a child then who would play outdoors barefoot), and the bacteria entered my body.
