Excellent video and diagnosis. Happened a day after I replaced the tensioner pulley… weird…but again THANK YOU!!!
You’re welcome
Yes, Yes, Yes. Thank you, Brother for this video. Excellent! This has never happened to me and I didn't know what the hell to think. Didn't even know that the crank shaft pulley could separate like that. To think that I was just about to hop on the road from California to Colorado in the cold weather. This has been a life saving video, and you recorded it so well. Once again, Thank you.
You’re welcome
This happened to me today 25 minutes after picking up my truck from the shop. Luckily, I was able to get into a parking lot to wait on the tow truck. The best you can do is laugh about it 😂😂.
Yeah, it happened on my own XJ last year...used it as excuse to replace the engine
That fan assembly and shroudhaving to come out like that, together... is about enough to make you wanna leave a dirty message on chrystlers answering machine. I'm doing this now and I shoulda cut that bottom part of the shroud and zipped it back to the top after I did the whole cooling system/radiator system not long ago.
Try working on BMW's
@@superb60ce Depends which bmw. I have a jeep zj, xj and a 2001 bmw 325xi. Almost as easy to work on it as a jeep.
Left the belt on and used a flat pry bar across the fan studs to hold the crank enough to break the bolt free. Dorman replacement felt tight because it's supposed to, it's a transition fit over the shaft. You're supposed to install with a special tool, it's basically just a double threaded rod and nut that pushes the balancer back over the crank shaft evenly. Can rent them for free from any auto shop.
I have a pulley installer
Hey gotta question been trying to get mine off and had the rope in spark plug well n and put lotta force trying to get pulley off with puller still not coming heard something pop and tried to remove puller while trying to loosen main bolt on puller pulley is spinning yet still got rope in engine n rope has no breaks maybe you can tell me what's going on
sounds like you snapped the crank snout key
Did you just undo the raiditor bolts or disconnect the hoses too
I left the hoses intact, there was just enough play to make it work...YMMV
Installation tool is needed for newer manufactured balancers. Threads are 1/2-20
I have a GREAT tool, but it will not fit with the radiator still installed
Was the new one that you didnt feel right about a dorman 594-018 by chance?
Yes
I know he opted for a used one.... Did you use the dorman 594-018? What is off about it?
@@22bootsy Yes, the dorman part was just real tight, tighter than I would want to mess with at the time.
Just did this repair. Had to use the installer tool. Couldn't get by without it. If using a replacement balancer plan on getting the tool. Threads are 1/2-20
What sucks is the front crank seal is right behind that pulley so if you don't do it now you'll regret pulling it back off for a $20 seal later on
Yup
I think my seal may be leaking too on my 01 XJ.
Did you use an installer kit?
That would require removing the radiator...this was a budget repair for a college student
So, not all pulleys require to be pressed on to the crank, just a specific one, and wonderful, that's the one I ordered. Darn it!
@@superb60cei just did mine yesterday didnt need to pull radiator to get installer on there
bravo
Help me restore my 91 ,straight 6 Laredo 👍🏾
Wrangler or Cherokee??
next time make sure Radiator cap don't block the shot
Had to go back and watch it to see what you were talking about
I wouldn't stick a rope in my piston. Ropes have fibers and they fray and fall off all the time. Don't want that in my piston. Sorry. I also will not take my starter off and wedge something in the teeth of my flywheel. I like my flywheel with all of it's teeth in tact. Here's what I'm going to try, I'm going to use the puller itself to hold my crank in place while I turn off the center bolt holding the pulley on. I'll do that by putting the puller on the pulley but leave off the main puller bolt in the center. I'll stick the socket on the center bolt first, put the puller on, then stick an extension through the center hole on the pulley, attach it to the socket, then turn loosen the center bolt while using the puller itself to keep the crank from turning.
Bet you didn't think of that? Or, you just like to roll the dice with sticking things into your piston through the spark plug hole.
I'll let you know how it turns out. Maybe I'll film it.
Nope I did not think of that, because it is not in the FSM nor is it a industry used practice
What size is the center bolt? Mine came apart today with 155k on it
Bolt head or bolt diameter and pitch
@superb60ce I was wondering about diameter and pitch, but I got it. I went and got a longer bolt to reinstall the balancer. 1/2-20 3 inches long. Thanks for the reply tho. I appreciate your time. Thanks for the good video!!
