I need to clarify, the insects on the edamame were JAPANESE BEETLES, not APHIDS! I said the wrong thing and it hit me this afternoon when I was doing something else, so I double checked and sure enough. Same management plan when you find them, but different critter. Though, did you know there are almost 4000 types of aphids! And some of them are larger black ones, called pea aphids! They aren’t so irradecent as the bugs we found today!

Bell peppers I couldn’t do ether until I juiced them up with acid fertilizer.... miracid works wonderfully on peppers! Or any kind of azalea food... holly tone.... etc...

Are you functioning on the same 24 hour period that I have? I don't know how you look this good and do all your research, preserving, dehydrating, selling, gardening, parenting.......really? I am impressed. I need a video on time management.
I grew up on a farm (Hanover VA tomatoes are known ALL over the east coast & border states) & my Mamaw & Papaw also didn't kill pests. We had HUGE black snakes that would dangle from the trees, easily 6-8+ feet long. They'd also lay under our muscadine grapevine trellises in the shade. My Mamaw would just step over them. I hated it as a kid but understand it now as an adult. I once sat on our well house for nearly 2 hrs refusing to come down unless my Papaw killed them all. He walked away & said "Well, when you get hungry or it gets dark, whichever comes first, you come on in! We'll be watching TV & waiting for you." Lol.
I think Benjamin and my 3 year old daughter are 2 of a kind. She picks and eats anything she can find out of our garden. This morning she had green beans, snap peas, tomatoes and blackberries for breakfast! Thank you for being so encouraging.
I decided to revisit one of your older garden tours. You seem so peaceful, grateful, and mindful in your garden presentation. I LOVE the messages you share and promotion of organic gardening. You inspired me with these earlier garden tours to garden myself. I now have 22 tomato plants and countless peppers. Also, I LOVE the tranquil music. THANK YOU!!!
I can not express how grateful I am that I found you! I first came to your channel last year while researching goats. I still want goats at some point but I am concentrating on gardening right now. I work so much (summers off though as I am a teacher) that I have to cram in as much learning as I can durring the summer. Everything I have learned about gardening is from reading and CZcams. I have learned the most from you! This has been my second year gardening and I am really getting into it. One of the things I am still trying to learn is how to cook with the fresh veggies I have. You and Petara (although she has moved to another channel for the most part) have taught me a lot about cooking as well. I would love to see more cooking and recipes! am also looking forward to your segments on fall gardening. I have not grown a spring or fall gardening as of yet but plan to this fall (I live in Virginia between Williamsburg and Richmond) and I am a zone 7 with lots of humidity as well. So sorry for rambling, I am just so grateful that I have you!

Such a wonderful and simple thing for you guys to do in trimming back your trees. You have cultivated a beautiful garden that people have a large appreciation for. A great use for the excess basil is basil lemonade. I blend up a good handful or two per gallon. It tastes best after sitting overnight. Sounds odd, but my whole family loves it.
Simmer okra and tomatoes together with onions, garlic, salt and pepper. Texas staple!
I my self don't like okra...but grew it for someone else...was amazed by the plant...they grew taller than me..before the deer found them

We've been adding a few drops of peppermint essential oil to our neem oil organic insect spray blend. Very effective.

I relate to the lack of pictures of me with my kids...I have forced myself to allow others to take pictures ( even if I look terrible) ..my kids will want some pictures of me later in life. I don't shield myself when I feel I don't look "perfect"...my kids won't care if I have my hair done...the way you present yourself, is a goal of mine. Natural, beautiful and with love
I am sorry to hear Rebeccah has been sick. I have been down also since June 11th. I sure hope she recoverers faster than me. Love yall would love to do what you all are doing but it is impossible... So I do as much as I am able. God Bless you all!

I have hot mess areas in my garden as well! Quite a bit more than you truth be told. Here in southeast Texas we are deluged with mosquitoes and I’d never dare to go into my garden in a dress or tank top. Long sleeves and mosquito pants for me. Makes it doubly hard to keep up. Humidity coupled with extreme heat and skeeters, oh my!
I think you are fast becoming one of my favorites. I like the laid back attitude. You get so much joy from your garden and that definitely comes through! Thank you for all the information
I watched your show while prepping dinner and my kids got hooked in. We are setting up our garden and it wont be ready until fall planting time so that is when I am starting. You may already know this, but it might help. I've planted tomato plants with a good foot and a half of the stem right in the soil. I cut off all the leaves and pop em in the ground. So, if you transplant a tomato again it will increase survival rates. However.....it also allows tomatoes access to more water. So if you over-water, or get lots of rain, tomatoes pop. I also grew tomatillos with great success in TN/KY. I used a soil mix of compost peat moss and vermiculite. Heavy on the compost. We picked bugs off them. The few that were there, and I grew them next to a bunch of peppers, sweet and spicy ones. They did great. Full sun. Not sure if that helps. This year I am adding beneficial nematodes to all my soil. I read it helps rid the garden of plant eating pests so I'm gonna find out! I ordered it on Amazon. You mix the powder with water and add it to your soil. Might have to reapply for a few years. Not sure on that yet. Thank you so much for sharing. I'm a homeschooling, gardening, herbalist mama that loves research much like yourself. Love learning from you. I really hope you do these videos again in 2019.

Tomatillos do great in southern Cali where I’m from. What I do is I trellis my tomatillos so horn worms can’t hide as easily. . Two plants gives me a sufficient harvest, but tomato hornworms love them so I go and collect my horn worms in the evening. That has really been the only thing that has messed with my tomatillos and I don’t over water.
Your garden is so beautiful I could cry! 😭🤣 as far as tomatillos, haven't had success either. Last year only one of my seedlings survived. So obviously no fruit then. THIS year I was able
To transplant three plants and they got massive like yours, had TONS of blooms, but produced zero tomatillos. I think it likely had to do with lack of pollinators. I noticed fewer bees early this season and read somewhere hurricane Harvey really affected the pollinators in the area. Not only that, apparently after the hurricane, the city sprayed insecticides because we get TONS of awful mosquitos. So that didn't help either. 😢 I asked another homesteader about her tomatillos because she had a huge harvest this year and she said the key is to plant something to draw the pollinators really close to the tomatillos. I want to say she had scabiosa right next to hers.

corn should be planted closed together and in a few rows, for it to get pollinated, each one of the tassels on top has to fall and hit the corn silk on the cob. each corn kernel is connected to a thread of corn silk.years ago , that's why people would call the the place where the corn was planted "the corn patch"
sorry to presume but you may want to use a soft brush to transfer pollen from the corn tassels to the silks in corn that is not block planted. @ 11:30 Like your philosophy of gardening and non-use of strong chemical pesticides and you how you spend time observing, learning and experiencing nature .......You have the true heart of a gardener.

I've been watching all your videos so I knew you had corn growing but you've never mentioned the kind. Side story I ordered tomato seeds from migardener but got sent corn by mistake. They told me I can keep the corn and I'll still get my tomatoes yay! But then you finally mentioned your corn type and I'm so excited that's the kind I was sent!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰

I love eating smaller okra raw. It is good while you are out in your garden but even better cut in 2 pieces and put some seasoned salt on them.

I love your garden tours and the passion you have for life! I gardened a lot with my parents as a child. Daddy was all about veggies and Momma was the Gerbera Daisy lover. I too had a special plant that grew outside my window...Elephant ears. You take me back to those special times with them that are precious now that they are gone. So glad I stumbled across your channel. Keep it up...you inspiration is so appreciated!
Pepper seeds are guilty by association with the placenta, which is where the heat comes from. Seeds simply have the oils of the placenta on them. Sometimes the seeds are actually bitter and the pepper is better with them removed. They are fun to grow, try Brazilian starfish next year.

Until I get my knees replaced I can't garden, so I LOVE your weekly tours. We have the same gardening style, just yours is a much larger garden.
I read that once basil flowers, even if you pinch them back, it's game over. I read that you pinch back six leaves down. I only tried this one year, but it did seem to work. Downside is that it will be a major basil harvest all at once. I just process the basil with a little bit of water to make a paste and then freeze in cube trays.
Does okra retain its "slime" when it's pickled?
I never saw a spider like that until I moved to Missouri. My husband calls it a common garden spider. I didn't know they bite, although I wouldn't get that close anyway. I love the design in its web. They usually take up permanent residence in the same spot. If you mess with the web (or weather does) they will build a new one in the same place.
If I were you, I'd collect the found ladybugs and let them feast on those aphid-infested plants.
Again, I just love your garden and I'm glad I can garden vicariously through you.
I always let my basil mature i use the leaves not the stems for season
Absolutely no slime in pickled okra if you are careful not to cut into the pod when trimming down the stem for packing your raw okra into jars.
I’m growing only 2 tomatoe plants and they are soo tall and you need space to grow them because they like to yarn when growing( the branches grow outward)! NO Problems thus far and they are full of fruits which makes them heavy so I’ve started staking the branches
I tried to grow tomatillos for a couple of years and gave up. I'm looking forward to reading the comments and possibly giving them another try. I don't enjoy really hot peppers either. It's such a joy to watch your garden grow.
We had nickel sized hail here in North Little Rock last night. I was terrified my garden would be ruined this morning!!

Technically I'm in 7b, though I live on a ridge and in a hight altitude than surrounding places so I tend to lean more to 7a for my frost date just to be careful.

Thanks for the weekly updates, your area has much more 'greenery' than mine I notice as I travel east from plains of north central Oklahoma to eastern Oklahoma and Arkansas it seems so much more alive with flora, fauna and busy buzzing insect life.

Jess I enjoy watching your videos so much! I had started following you on IG months ago (or longer) and didn't even find your CZcams channel till about a month ago. I have been going back and watching your older videos as well. This year I have 1 tomato plant (its in an upside down hanging bag I bought at the goodwill for $2! ) that is doing great, well over 25 tomatoes on 1 plant! In the past I have tried to plant larger gardens and they always turn into jungles. I live in VA and we have the red clay dirt that can be a total pain to grow in. You are helping inspire me to think outside the box and figure out a better way to garden in the future. There is a bank beside our house that gets great sun for most of the day and are hoping to terrace it off and try that next year. We have chickens and have a compost bin going so I know thats a start also. Thank you for all the inspiration! I have a few questions, do you all have bees or plan to get them in the future? Have you ever though about doing a cookbook to share how you use everything from your garden? I know you have horses, chickens, a pet pig and milk goats; are there plans for any cattle, goats, pig etc for meat to feed your family? I do not like okra slime, and I Love it fried. Ofcourse it's not so healthy. I have found a happy healthy medium, slice in halves, season and bake at 450, 20-30 minutes. I like to cook them till they look burnt. Oh yes, add a touch of any oil with the seasoning. Oh my goodness, they taste like fried without the guilt. I am telling you, I love it. Do the same with green beans, veggie candy. All my kids love it!

Tomatillo tip: Last year was my first year growing a tomatillo. I bought it as a start with a few fruits already on it. After planting, it didn't set a single fruit the following month. I did some research and read that they can't self-fertilize. I immediately went out and bought 2 other varieties and very quickly they all set loads of fruit. Something to try. :) I don't remember for sure, but don't think they need to be separate varieties, just separate plants.

You need to plant more rows of corn to pollinate. Corn self pollinates by the wind .
I am so greatly enjoying watching your summer garden tours - it's helping me deal with my "spring fever" here in Northern Illinois!! It's also so very inspiring!! ..I think I want to get some of those Tabasco peppers to plant as ornamentals in the front yard - they are just so beautiful!! Definitely going to be getting some of the varieties you recommend!..
I would enjoy videos on composting and creating good garden beds, and feeding the soil and plants.
