  • In this video, Giorgos Panagiotakos, a research fellow at Input Output, delves into scaling throughput and specifically Ouroboros Leios, a new member of the Ouroboros protocol family that achieves near optimal throughput.
    Traditional blockchain protocols use a leader-based approach for block proposals, but this often results in suboptimal throughput. Panagiotakos highlights the importance of high throughput for reducing congestion and enabling the efficient operation of layer 2 applications.
    Key topics discussed:
    - current blockchain protocols: analysis of leader-based protocols like Bitcoin and their throughput limitations.
    - challenges in blockchain networking: protocol bursts and equivocation attacks.
    previous high throughput solutions: input endorsers, parallel chains, and BFT-style approaches, and why they fall short.
    - introduction to Ouroboros Leios: an overlay proof-of-stake protocol designed for near-optimal throughput under realistic network conditions.
    - technical insights: methodology and features of Ouroboros Leios, including stake-based endorsing, pipelining, and mitigation strategies for protocol bursts and equivocation attacks.
    Panagiotakos explains how Ouroboros Leios can transform low throughput protocols into high throughput ones, ensuring robust performance even against adaptive adversaries. Watch to understand how this groundbreaking protocol can enhance blockchain scalability and reliability.

    Nice explanation about the adverserial mitigation. That is what I call protocol design, looking from each angle! Nice work. If only some other chains would adopt this approach instead of rushing stuff out.

    This seems like a hybrid between IOTA tangle DAG and a traditional blockchain where each block has its own tangle / graph for the lifecycle of that block and the TXs are sorted and references are stored on the block instead of the transactions. Is this not just a rollup and where are the actual transaction detailed recorded / stored? I’m probably missing something, or maybe it’s outside the scope of this talk, but I would want to make sure the history is recorded somewhere?

  • @TheSlinq
    @TheSlinq Před měsícem +1

    So this is a multi-headed block graph instead of a blockchain, right?
    To be honest, I thought that's what Hydra was going to be, so I'm a bit confused over the naming here.
    Can we have an explanation in English please? I've been a software developer for 30 years, but I don't speak academic.

      Wondered myself, so I asked chatGPT. Please correct this if it’s wrong
      Ouroboros Leios modifies the base layer consensus protocol and blockchain structure to enhance throughput, whereas Hydra operates as a Layer 2 solution, creating off-chain state channels to process transactions.
      Leios requires substantial changes to the consensus mechanism and the introduction of new block types. Hydra, however, adds a supplementary framework that works alongside the main blockchain without altering its core protocols significantly

    • @TheSlinq
      @TheSlinq Před měsícem

      @MrKennyBones that's my understanding of it yes. Hydra is definitely something separate (and largely useless, to me at least).
      It's not clear to me yet whether leios will be be a cardano hard fork, a side chain, an L2 or a completely separate blockchain.

    • @MrKennyBones
      @MrKennyBones Před měsícem +2

      @@TheSlinq Sounds like it’ll be a part of the L1, so that means part of an upcoming hard fork.
      Hydra is something each project must decide to use independently of the main layer

    • @medala100
      @medala100 Před měsícem +1

      Leios is on the main layer.
      Hydra is a specific L2 that solves specific scaling problems, like fast payments, gaming, betting and so on.

      As others have said, Ouroboros Leios is a Hard Fork enduced complete overall of how the Base Layer (L1) Finalised Block Creation system will work.
