It's a matter of time that you will have motor problems from not, at the very least, spraying off these bikes and quads before breaking them down. This XR has sand EVERYWHERE and could have used a quick scrubbing before taking everything apart. It just makes sense bro.

Air filter checks out for being wet but it dried but you button it back on and you can hear the dirt crunching in there. Should have removed the air filter clean the air box spotless clean the air filter re oil and reinstall then go to the carburetor. Then rinse and repeat. Fuel system maintenance 101.👌

No lie.....normally your uploads are spot on but you left a ton of sand hanging above an open engine and that doesn't make it. The guy who made this a "water-cooled XR" and didn't immediately drain all fluids should have his head examined. I accidentally rode an XR into a river and into a hole in the river bottom (that wasn't there the day before).......I quickly pulled the bike from the river, drained the oil and gas and put fresh in both. I took the air filter out, drained the carb and started it up. Did the whole process two more times (oil/fuel are cheaper than engines). That was 10+ years ago and it doesn't miss a beat today.

Don't know if anyone will see this as I just seen the vid but that was my bike and yes it did plunge in the water. Trail was still a bit flooded from heavy rain a few days prior and was trying to cross a small river to get back to the mainland. Sand and a pit or sink hole gave way halfway thru and plunged me chest deep. Was able to keep bike upright and push it out myself and then i immediately tipped it on the side and drained airbox carb and exhaust. Unfortunately the damage was too much and I flagged a atv with a rope down to tow me all the way back to my truck. Glad 2vintage was able to save it!

Had some guys drive across a tidal river in Korea in the daytime. They returned to the small stream at night and drove into a river. The mechanics filled the motor with diesel to float all the water out. Gas weighs about 6 pounds per gallon and water 8. So diesel and oil must have been heavier. They then drained the salt water doused jeep. Dried. Then got it started with a fresh battery.

Just a quarter turn is night and day difference in the temperature change. Now I'm going to watch the rest of the video to see what the real problem is. Lol fyi the oil is over full its a dry sump system it takes just shy of 2 quarts 1/2 of a quart in the engine the rest in the frame. Before adding oil check the oil screen in the bottom of the frame oil outlet it can get clogged. There is also a screen at the bottom of engine, remove clutch cover to get to it.

Do you hold the clutch in when you kick over a dirtbike? I always do when I kick over my yz490. Are there any benefits holding the clutch in to start a bike? Many guys do it.

Perhaps they think that way it's still easier although already in neutral. Useless procedure I'd say.

@@paulh.5691 I generally start my 490 in gear dude so just force of habit to pull the clutch in when I start a bike even if in neutral. Does make your hand ache though when your having a hard time kicking the hell out of it for 5 mins. My 490 is a real pig to start. Needs seriously high and hard kicking to get it fired up. Love it.

Pft. I watched someone just a new Honda Grom into a pool 3 times. Thing kept running. A little water isn’t gonna kill anything, unless you go in at high RPM and it bends a rod.

Right! Gloves are for sissies that don't wanna get dirty. I been a auto mechanic for 20 years and never once thought gloves would help or be worth wearing.
