  • Fort Burgoyne was constructed in the 1860s as a result of the Royal Commission on the Defence of the United Kingdom.
Originally the fort was called Castle Hill Fort but was renamed after the 19th Century General; John Fox-Burgoyne, who was Inspector-General of Fortifications.
The fort was built on a polygonal model with two flanking wing batteries, the East and West Outworks.
The Fort was upgraded and adapted during both World Wars and remained under military ownership until 2006.
