Stop Taking Your Thoughts So Seriously

  • Brothers and sisters, I think it's time for us to understand that many times in our life, we take ourselves and our thoughts way too seriously. It can be very easy, especially for Christians, to take topics so seriously, our thoughts becomes so weighty and pressurized. We lose a sense of peace, we become disconnected from love and get lost in our head, wrapped around a topic that has become distorted.
In my journey of healing and freedom, when I found myself having a day where I was really struggling, I learned over time that my pattern of taking myself too seriously was working against me. I was losing connection to the importance of relationship, the reality that God's grace is at work in my life, that no matter what is going on, I can still embrace joy. I can laugh. I can have fun. I can be present in the moment.
I pray today's insight will help you recalibrate your thoughts and emotions so you can reconnect to the love, joy and peace that is available for you to enjoy today.

It could probably be a whole other video/talk but the pressure intensifies when we project this idea onto others...in other words, we think they are taking us as seriously as we take ourselves. Even people we don't even know, just in passing. It always amazes me when someone says "I didn't even know you were there, didn't notice you". I have a 'friend' who does this, haha. Seriously, you are helping me break down some lies I just went along with for years/decades. I thought I was addressing the problem, with little progress. If we keep putting in bigger screws to secure the door to the hinge and it is still not holding, maybe the wood is rotten. Thank you brother, this is great content

Sometimes I "unpack" or "extract" valuable truth and wisdom from "reasoning with" or "deconstructing" my thoughts. It's kinda like wrestling with a difficult math problem until you can solve it. I find it fun.
Is this something I shouldn't do when overcoming OCD? I wonder?

Hey Mark, I noticed in the book, God Loves Me and I Love Myself, that you quoted Bill Johnson from Bethel. I find your videos extremely helpful and I am grateful to God for them. However I know what Bill preaches at Bethel and its very heretical. I was anting to know if you just liked that quote from him of if you actually agree with what he says. It ha s been such a wear and tear on me being able to receive counsel from you because I struggle so much with legalism... I ask this in all love. Love-Victor

Hey there! I understand this all too well, and I had the same exact battle with reading to and listening to Mark's books and materials. It's okay!
I've come to realize that one of the most important things in our relationship with one another is to learn how to "eat the meat" while spitting out the bones.
This whole journey is about learning how to think for ourselves while maintaining love in our hearts.
We do not need any human being to be something "perfect" for us in order for us to move forward in healing. This is part of that "control" and "fear" that we need to release. Perfectionism is a killer!
That's not to say that the issue you stated isn't a real issue. It's just not an issue we can control.
We can be released from the pressure of needing to agree 100% with someone to learn from them.
We are all growing, and Mark states that he is too, and that, is the beautiful grace of our Lord.
Listening to teachers or learning from someone is not about needing to be 100% "perfect" for us in every "little" belief.
Christ did that for us... People aren't perfect, myself included! That's the beauty of the Gospel, too.
I understand your battle though, with coming out of abusive cults or legalistic environments, that we have to re-learn how to think from ground 0.
So much has been distorted to us, our very foundations and reality, so we then we have to fight "hyper-vigilance." We obsessively wonder if what we are learning now is "safe." It's good to test all things and is necessary, but we have to learn to not be afraid of other people's garbage or bad doctrines.
We fear no evil. We have to get rooted in our identity in Christ.
So, we can listen to Mark DeJesus or anyone else without compromising truth or our own personal convictions.
Shoot... with such a standard, we'd never be able to read any book or listen to anything written by any man in this world, because everyone has so many hidden or overt sins and issues. We have to learn the wisdom of both being rooted AND to release.
In relationship is how we reason together in love as the body of Christ about such doctrines and things. It's difficult to do online though. It stinks.
Anyways... I say all of this to encourage you to keep holding to your (very correct convictions IMO) while not getting hung up on the "bones."
Keep letting Mark's wisdom pour over your heart while releasing the "bones..." not ignoring the bones... but also not letting them steer you away from receiving good teaching, either. This is maturity.
We all have to give an account to the Lord on our own for what we believe for sure as Romans chapter 14 states. A good read.
Take care, and peace be with you! ✌

Legalism uses God as a weapon. Legalism shames, blames, criticizes, judges and condemns. So keep this in mind. We have all been conditioned in legalism our whole lives and even more so now. Our government is really forcing us to live in legalism. Thank God for Mark who is helping us find our way out of it. And to live in the truth.
