- New Mexico is the third state in my Route 66 road trip series. My dad and I took 14 days to drive from California to Illinois and we spent most of two days driving through New Mexico. New Mexico is a fun spot for Route 66 stops as it has places like the Blue Hole in Santa Rosa and the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari. Let me know what you think in the comments.

New Mexico really is the land of Enchantment. Tons of vistas and views, backroads all over. History. From the North in the mountains to the deserts of Carlsbad. The only thing we dont have is an ocean!

I'd like to put in a word for the Richardson Trading Post in Gallup, NM. They've been there forever, they're a genuine trading post (many local native Americans will pawn their saddles during the winter, mostly to store them there, then redeem them in spring), and they have the best selection of Old Pawn jewelry I've ever seen.
Hello from Toronto. In 1958, when I was 12 years old, my parents and I drove route 66 from St. Louis to LA. In 2008 (50 years later) I travelled Interstate 40 and 66 whenever possible through New Mexico and Arizona. Sad to see the towns who were thriving in 1958 now mostly gone. Interestingly, San Jon NM is pronounced “San Hone” not San John. It’s a beautiful part of the country to see. Good video.

You visited some of my favorite places in NM. I lived in Navajo Country about 55 miles from Gallup, where we had to do our grocery shopping and I swam laps and other business. I stayed at the El Rancho for a wedding once. My sister lived in Grants for awhile. I spent many nights at the El Vado and ate many peppery hot dogs at the Dog House in Albuquerque. So many other places I've lived or visited, Santa Fe and even Tucumcari. Thanks for the nostalgia.
Omg THANK YOU. My grandpas always lived in New Mexico. I’m taking my boyfriend for the first time later this year! I went to the 66 diner as a kid! No one could remember where the hell it was or what it was called but your video just brought back so many memories. Now I can revisit and take the love of my life there 💛
One thing you forgot to show was the musical highway section of Rt 66 just east of Albuquerque!

When Dad and I made our annual trip from OC to Iowa we'd take this route to Tucumcari then up hwy 54 through the panhandles. Great fun.

We went Route 66 going to Santa Ana California in 1959 I love it would give anything to see it again my dad helped build Disney Land and he worked at Disneyland in 1956 that’s my kind of country love the west
We are traveling out west this summer and driving Route 66 for awhile. And we are staying in Gallup NM for 4 days at the El Rancho motel. We were lucky enough to be able to stay in John Wayne’s suite. Thanks for the great videos with you & pops
I live in New Mexico, and besides the chaotic crime rate and bipolar weather, it’s pretty darn nice here. I love all the classic charm this state has, a southwestern treasure for sure!
Why theree is a lot of crime 😢? When i go i cant even go to gas stations at night or buy beer at night.
New Mexico looks groovy. Especially the San Felipe de Neri and the Rattlesnake Museum. I loved the dirt road portion. Also, seeing yummy Josh shirtless was an additional special treat.
As a kid I grew up riding from So. Cal. too San Jon (the J is pronounced as a H) Both of my parents are from that area of New Mexico. I remember when Tucumcari, San Jon and Glenn Rio and all the other towns on Route 66 were busy little towns. Actually Tucumcari was a pretty good size town. My dad was a cop there in the late 40s

Now I am in New Mexico LAS cruses as a guest I travelled from Phinix Arizona to this place in July 2020 . I enjoyed the sienes enroute .
Thank you so much for posting these videos. In 1966 my Dad, sister, younger brother and I drove from Bakersfield CA to New York in a 1966 VW Bus. We visited the caverns near Peach Springs and I just took my son there last year. It was amazing at how little it had changed. We made many stops along our way to NY in 1966 but for some reason Arizona and New Mexico have stuck in my memory the most (I was ten). Again, thanks so much for the post and am so glad you got to spend some quality time with your Dad....

Love your videos, I have done the Rt 66 trip 3 times in my life but you are showing spots I have missed. Your Alaska trip was gorgeous, I have never been . I will continue watching you and your Dad's travels. How you can fit so much in one day is beyond me . Happy trails. And thanks for all the tips you give along the way.
I think I've seen this 5 times now and really enjoy it. I know you've been to Santa Fe previously so didn't stop on this trip, but anyone considering doing Route 66 should really consider doing the original route up to Santa Fe and across to Las Vegas rather than going through Tijeras and Moriarty. You can still drive on the original dirt road near La Bajada, which is a beautiful view with loads of switchbacks up the hillside. Unfortunately you can't drive down it, but it's still pretty cool. However, you need a proper vehicle with good clearance and at least AWD. Also, east of Santa Fe is Glorieta Pass, which is the most significant Civil War battleground in the western theater. You do miss out on the Musical Highway and the nice drive through Tijeras Pass, but I think it's worth it, especially for Santa Fe.
So miss living in Tucumcari New Mexico. 2012,thru 2015.
Thanks for doing this. It's been over 40 years since I was in NM. Good to see there is some upkeep of the tourist places along the way and in Albuquerque. Nice for Santa fe as well.

I did a cross country drive a years ago from Florida to California, I ended up driving through 40 and did some of these stops when I would drive on Route 66. Love seeing this video.
The Route 66 Diner is a great place to eat. The food is like home cooking, and the portions are huge! Very good food. My favorite is meatloaf with fried okra and mashed potatoes. Try it out the next time you come through.
I've really enjoyed your version of traveling down Rte 66 and look forward to seeing the rest of States you travel through on Route 66😉. Just found you videos and love them. This series made me very nostalgic for the trips I did 30 years ago through New Mexico, Arizona, Oklahoma and Missouri. A lot has changed since then and much has been lost of the old signs and stops along the route but I'm happy to see that there is still much to see and do. Thanks for your excellent Videos.
I love the El Rancho! I spent Christmas of 2014 there. And the Rattlesnake Museum is a must-see.
Pretty good video, thumbs up. You even stopped to take a picture in Moriarty, NM about 35 miles east of Albuquerque. That’s where you showed the pic of the El Comedor restaurant. I lived in Moriarty for a few years. For Rt. 66 travelers there are a few more Rt. 66-era motels, cool signs and all, in Albuquerque that we’re not shown in this video. However, good info, especially in Tucumcari.
I did the Route 66 route 23 years ago. I need to do it again. I do see the owl in "Owl Rock" lol but not right off the bat. Then I saw it.
We stayed the the Blue Swallow last night. I would not have known about it if it weren’t for this video so thank you. It was such a cool play to stay.

I've always enjoyed the freight trains & scenery that are found on road trips thru the SouthWest - it's classic America but the scene with the rusty old chair at 13:00 is absolute perfection. Nice grab!
You passed by a ranch my grandfather owned in the late 60's into the 70's - the Longhorn, about 8 miles east of Moriarty. It was a tourist trap on the highway with an old west museum and bar. Even though it had an on/off ramp when I-40 was put in, it still died. The buildings were leveled decades ago.
Top of my list - it may have to be this year now - after watching this

Near Grants, between old Route 66 and the Interstate is a lava flow. We stopped and walked on it and my six year old son picked up a piece of "hot" lava rock. 66 wove its way through the fields finding the easiest route, when they built the interstate the simply blasted a straight line.

Enjoyable video. I did RT 66 from OKC to Needles, CA last year and hit all these spots in NM. This video brought back good memories of that road trip.

Check out 6t6kix on the web. Great pics of different 66 alignments thru the years, from the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, on up to present. Many alignments run near to, or next to each other, and some merge together....

There used to be a Wigwam motel in Tucumcari in the late 50s. We drove between Lee’s Summit, MO and Truth or Consequences NM. a few times. I was 10 with three younger siblings, and we pestered Mom to stay there until she finally gave in.

Great Dogs, but also famous from Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. I've been in NM for 20 years, but haven't been east of Santa Rosa since I came here. Just might have to do that trip soon. I bet you're glad to have done it before Covid. I miss seeing people without masks.

Cool video. Spent a lot of nights playing for dances at the El Rancho. Great place. Budville Trading was my great uncle Buds place. My grandmother had boxes of black and white pictures of wrecks and events related to the old road. Keep up the good work, travel safe.

New Mexico has some beautiful scenery. Its not an overcrowded area which is very nice. Its a very poor state though, with a very serious crime problem. That fact has been reported time and again. Its not an exaggeration. I would have loved to see NM in the days of travelling RT 66. I really enjoyed this video. Its very well done. Thanks
Another great vid! When I did this section of Route 66 with my Dad in 1994 we attempted to stay at as many places as we could that were in 1946 Jack Rittenhouse Route 66 Guide. In Gallup we also stayed at the El Rancho and ate at the Eagle Cafe. We did take the Santa Fe alignment staying at the El Rey and eating at the Pink Adobe. The national monument in Manuelito is worth a stop. Twenty years before we stayed at one of the $6/night motels in Tucumcari. We stopped by to photograph the Blue Swallow but failed to go inside to talk to the Lucille Redman when she was still alive. Surprised you didn’t share about standing on the corner in Winslow or the Wigwam motel in Holbrook. We took a side trip to Painted Desert/Petrified Forest National Park.
Nice little tidbit for you: San Jon (pronounced hone) was one of the last towns that I-40 bypassed. As a result, the section between San Jon and Glenrio was sometimes referred to as ‘slaughters lane’ because the high traffic on such a small road led to many severe accidents.
San Jon’s fight to not be bypassed was fairly successful as I-40 basically goes right thru.
Hope you had fun in my hometown in Amarillo as well. It ain’t much, but it’s home.
