  • Fans react to Matt Smith's (the Eleventh Doctor), series seven regeneration scene from the episode "The Time of the Doctor". There's already a couple of mashups/compilations on youtube of this scene but here's my version whereby I've focused on those that make the fewest cuts (because I love this scene so much).
    Doctor Who Reactor's Facebook Group - / 328233220681922

    * Paul Brown's Mashup (Part 1) - • Video
    * Jeremey Stevig's Mashup (Part 2) - • The Time Of The Doctor...
    No requests, please.
    ###########
    FAQ ###
    ###########
(Q1) Would you do a reaction mashup of...?
(A1) Sorry but I do not take requests because either:
    (1) this hobby will become a chore and thus boring for me,
    (2) I might get spoiled on something I haven't watched yet,
    (3) the comments sections of my videos get filled with posts which have nothing to do with the mashup on that page,
    (4) when people make requests they don't provide a playlist of their favouite reactions as a starting point, or indicate in any way which reaction videos they had in mind, and/or
    (5) the person making the request doesn't realise that there aren't enough reactions of what they're requesting (and in most cases they haven't even looked at any reactions at all)
(Q2_a) Would you include my reaction in your next mashup?
(A2_a) Sorry, the answer is no because:
    (1) I like to decide who makes it into my mashups,
    (2) there is only so much space available in a mashup resulting in someone being disappointed or annoyed at me if they don't make it in,
    (3) I only have a limited amount of free time to make these and so I'd rather not have to keep a list of who I "must" include.
    (Q2_b) Why isn't so-and-so in this mashup?
(A2_b) Basically the same answer as (Q2-a) about but with the addition that I also like to change things up a bit.
(Q3) How do you deal with copyright so that you can monetise your videos?
(A3) I don't, really. I think there's only three videos in total as of January 2015 which I have monetised. All of the other videos I have uploaded have copyright claims on them and therefore all advertising revenue goes to the copyright holders, I don't get a single penny from them. Although there is a valid argument to be made that the vast majority of my mashups fall under "fair use" and "criticism", as well as the mashup as a whole being a "transformative" work, it would be a long drawn out process to revoke the copyright claim and I just can't be bothered to go through it.
(Q4) Is youtube your main job?
(A4) lol, no. I have a full time job, this is just a hobby for me to do on a Sunday morning. Almost all of my mashups have copyright claims on them so any advertising revenue goes straight to the copyright holders, I make virtually nothing from these. This really is just for fun. Even if I could make enough money from youtube, I wouldn't want it as my job, I love my current type of work way too much.
(Q5) Who are the people in the mashup?
(A5) I include credits and direct links to the original videos in the annotations at the beginning of the video. Alternatively, here is a playlist of the reactor's - • Doctor Who 6x06 AGMGTW...
(Q6) What music is playing out over the outro?
(A6) For this video, that would be a sample of Dollface's cover of Toploader's "Achilles Heel"

The problem is they shot that regeneration and also the next one as a comedic effect that immediately followed the dramatic loss of the Doctor before. You can't switch up the tone and musical score in 1 second like that without it appearing jarring.

That last part, with Eleven/Matt Smith giving his speech about all of the people before him, and how "I'll always remember when The Doctor was ME," shows me just how much Matt loved being The Doctor. Because that was just as much Matt speaking as it was Eleven. Listen to it again. It's Matt talking about respect for the role, and how much he will always cherish this.
The best regeneration of the modern series, in my opinion. As much as I loved Tennant's heartbreaking departure, this was so, so poignant.

If they chose River instead, I'll die heartbroken with him. I swear! Good thing they already had their goodbye. It's already bad enough during The Name of The Doctor, but to have it at the same time as Eleven's end? While romantic in that tragic way that some people love, it's also beyond cruel....

People say how Tennant's departure was sad but he was whining but Smith just kept smiling through out. knowing his time was up, ready for the next life. When he was dropping the bow tie, he was accepting his fate. It's so so heart breaking and emotional. Compare their last lines:
    10: "I don't want to go."
11: "I'll always remember when the doctor was me."
Which one was more heart breaking? Smith was the old man who the doctor actually was but still kept marching on.

10 had been the Doctor for a couple of years whereas eleven lived for hundreds of years. 10 could have done so much more if he had more time hence it wasn't his time to go and he didn't want to go as a result. Eleven was more accepting since he had effectively died of old age and lived a full life.

No. David leaving was heartbreaking. Not just because of the regeneration, but because HE, Tennant, was leaving. HE didn't want to go. He was the ultimate fan boy who got to play his favorite TV character. It was a double punch to the gut because of that. I cry for the Doctor and for David every time. He even made sure when he came back for the 50th that his last line on the show would remain 'I don't want to go'.

The regeneration is such an exciting time (and when the new doctor is announced), because you are both sad to see the old doctor who you have gotten to know and love go, but really looking forward to what new energy will come from the new actor.

+beflamboyantreviews I couldn't have phrased it better myself. I've seen every regeneration scene (not in order) and even when it's been a Doctor that I rank as one of my favorites, I usually view those last moments more as exciting rather than sad.
I will have to confess, however, that when I first saw this one, I bawled. I think it was mostly due to Matt pushing really, really hard on the fourth wall ("I will always remember when the Doctor was me" as he looks at the camera). I imagine he was trying not to shed a few tears himself.

I have just started Season 4 of the Doctor and I now understand all of these reactions where as before when I started watching the reactions I think I was only touched by the scenes themselves. The appeal to these Mashups is that you know you're one of those faces in the video too. It's an immersion of empathy. Like a lot of fans the 9th Doctor was my first Doctor and has a special place in my heart so when Eccleston left I was crushed and didn't like David's Doctor because of it but it only took three or four episodes for me to get on board with him so that I thought "okay, that's my boy". That being said, I can feel that it's getting close to him leaving soon too. It's the nature of the show. #%*+! Honestly though, I think I was more crushed when Rose left and then Martha. It's amazing. You really do start to love these characters. I feel like I did when I read A Song of Ice and Fire for the first time. When Rose was lost I walked away from the series thinking "That's it. I'm Done!" the same way I did when Stark got his block lobbed off in Game of Thrones. Of course, it took about two whole days until I needed another fix of both the Doctor as well as the Martin books. They draw you in so that you're emotionally invested. It's brilliant. I am loving my initiation into Doctor Who even though there will one day be an end to that as well. Such as all things wonderful, cherish while you can. There will never be another first.
