Y Tu Mamá También and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban director Alfonso Cuarón returns to the helm to tell this futuristic tale in which society is without hope since humankind lost its ability to procreate. The year is 2027, and women can no longer give birth. The youngest inhabitant of the planet has just died at the age of 18, and all hope for humanity has been lost. As civilization descends into chaos, a dying world finds one last chance for survival in the form of a woman who has become inexplicably pregnant. Now, as warring nationalistic sects clash and British leaders try to maintain their totalitarian stronghold on the country, a disillusioned bureaucrat (Clive Owen) is brought back into the fold of activism by his guerrilla ex-wife (Julianne Moore). Reluctantly, he takes on the daunting task of escorting Kee (Claire-Hope Ashitey), the refugee who represents humankind's last hope for survival, out of harm's way and into the care of a mysterious organization known as The Human Project. You can actually see fear in the eyes of the younger people unsure of what they are looking at. In the older people its pure joy knowing that there is hope for humanity again.

Some of those people are old enough to have held thier own babies at some point in their lives. I think some of the older ones that wanted to get close were remembering that.

When the first soldier realizes there is a baby and yells "ceasefire", and then when the two soldiers outside neal and make the sign of the cross after seeing the baby, those two scenes always fucking tear me up.

SpikedGaming The two older soldiers on the left at 2:45 always get me. The first one looks so weary but happy at the same time, and I love how the second one ignores the frantic talking from the radio and just stares with his mouth wide open in disbelief.
I strongly believe this movie is one of the best ever made.
And this scene is the best scene in movie I've ever seen. The power of the emotion, the tracking shot, the soundtrack, the acting from EVERYONE all the extras and main cast.
It is simply a masterpiece of cinema, and Children of Men is so, so underrated.

No they wouldn't, when seeing that baby they received hope again. something that was missing in their lives so they were just ordered to fight against civilians/refugees.
No dialog, just facial expressions, body language. And it's still moving.
I hope to not sound too pretentious but, that's what they call "Cinema" (with the capital C), the opposite of "entertainment"... the old good rule of "show don't tell".

It's right when the soldier immediately said, "STOP! CEASE FIRING! CEASE FIRING!" that really hit me and I bursted into tears. Not just the civilians who are just fighting for survival, but even the soldiers who were sworn into service will stop & ignore their direct orders just to pause for one moment and see a baby. THAT is powerful.

Those old soldiers look emotional because they are seeing a baby again after 18 years...
Those younger soldiers look confused and scared because they never really seen a real baby...
European Pizza there aren't that many young soldiers either. The professional US military has a lot of late 20s-early 30s personnel, but you don't often see so many later 30s-40s men as ground troops kicking in doors. This world's population has aged quite a bit
I think it has more to do with the fact that for the past two decades, everyone present's entire world has been defined by babies not existing.

We take seeing new babies for granted, in a world were no baby has been born in 18 years, eventually the knowledge of babies slowly fades away. I love how this scene shows something we ALL have, a natural instinct to protect a child. Seriously everytime you hear a baby cry, you instantly react in someway, but most time, your very first impulsive act is to care for the child. This scene did a great way of showing that even after 18 years of infertility, that instinct is still very much alive and strong in the human soul.

The shock of the platoon leader ordering to cease fire after hearing the baby cry is enough to send you into a state of uncontrollable tears 😭
That actor did an amazing job - both with his face (the initial shock as he realised what he was looking at), and his voice (the frantic urgency in his tone as he yelled to cease fire).

The tears. Oh my god the tears. Despite the ugliness and cruelty of life and mankind - everything stops in the face of innocence. All humans want is the beauty and innocence of life. We are all one. My god, this scene.

I love the really small details in this scene, such as at 1:55, where we see the civilian gently touch the soldiers shoulder, as they both sit together to witness the scene in front of them. Their conflict ceases to matter for those few minutes.

I watched it last night. I was choked up! Films almost never do that to me but this? Wow! I wasn't expecting that!
I recorded from SyFy and it missed the last few minutes ARGH! I am trying to find the ending.
If you thought Children of Men was phenomenal for its direction, you owe it to yourself to also watch Gravity. The fear, the tension, the unknowingness of it all is so palpable. I'd label Cuarón as the best director of my generation (IMO)

I can't believe the emotion that came pouring out.
The only other films that have done that to me are 12 Years a Slave and Schindler's List.
I shed a few tears because of this scene. Particularly just before it when he told the rebel "...It's a girl." I couldn't hold it in any longer. Then the gunshots rang. The opera'esque music in the background, the baby wailing over all the music, continuing to silence, the soldier that got down on one knee...

The woman cries "Ha tinok", which is "The baby" in Hebrew.
Theres a woman as well who says "bendita eres" which is "you are holy" in spanish.

You have to remember that alot of these people haven't seen a baby for a long time. Not because of war but becuase something happened to the human race where we can't reproduce. Imagine two decades or so of not seeing one baby or child. Really emotional scene.
Is really more than that. Hope is crushed and everyone as turned cynical, self-destructive, or continue trough the motions like a machine. This baby is like some miracle that deny that and change that.

Uncontrollable tears. This is the most beautiful and powerful scene I’ve ever watched in a movie. The way the entire world stops, the crying stops, the gunfire stops, the conflict stops, the entire world stops and watches in awe as the last baby is carried out through a war field, giving humanity hope and everyone reaches their hand for the last piece of life left. Truly a masterpiece. Nothing will beat the power of this scene.

This is one of the most terrifying things to imagine. The world is crumbling, humans can't procreate, the army is at your doorstep blowing up your walls when you happened to land there by chance. Yet, it's beautiful, because mankind witnesses a flickering hope in that baby. Remember, many of the people born in this world have never seen a child. As one would say "I felt the world die when I could no longer hear the laughter of children. They all looked, they stopped, they felt joy again for a fleeting minute.
I got to admit this is one of strongest and emotionally intense scenes throughout this whole film.

This was the first movie that has genuinely made my cry, I was watching with my dad and during this scene I began sobbing uncontrollably. I thought I was soft or just too emotional because nothing had ever made me have this reaction before. However, I looked over to my dad and he was crying too. I don't know if it was the fact that I was sharing this moment with him or that It gave me the reassurance that it was ok have this sort of reaction but it just made me cry harder. After the credits began rolling I just walked over to him on the couch and starting crying into him, I couldn't stop. He is a filmmaker and this moment specifically made me finally understand why he made movies. Why he has the drive to make work that causes this sort of reaction from people. Emotions are such an essential part of our lives and to make a piece of work that could make a person feel the way that this movie and this scene made me feel is beautiful. I just wanted to share this because it was such a memorable part of my life.

I like to think that once the RPG fired that all the soliders simultaneously fired back with the objective of protecting the baby in mind.
The rebel that meets Theo on the stairs at 1:25 is the guy from the resistance house earlier in the film. I always assumed he knew that the leadership was dead and figured Theo would do the right thing. I saw this film when it first came out. One of the most touching pieces of cinema I've ever witnessed. Easily in my top 100 films of all time.
I picked up on that after watching the film a third time. Besides yourself, I don't think I've seen anyone else mention it. Seemed like a good bloke, even if he had a job to do.

I think this scene is probably the best in all of movie history.
Just the sheer force of emotion in these 3 minutes far surpasses anything that a full length film has been able to that I can think of.

This remains the most realistic depiction of a world in disarray. No leather jackets. No cool adventures. Just confused people and indiscriminate violence halted only by a baby crying
This scene always gives me chills when I watch. The juxtaposition of the innocent baby and her mother in a scene of war sets such a stark contrast.. it reminds me of that legend about the christmas truce of 1914 when French, German, and British soldiers stopped fighting, exchanged food, conversation and then went right back to fighting a few days later
The Christmas Truce is a true story.
I am not at all a fan of children or infants but this scene is very powerful and I love every bit of it.

Well considering as an infant I didn't have the brain functionality to hate myself nor do I remember being an infant, no. Also everyone says that same thing, 'guess you didn't like yourself'. I didn't develop a dislike towards children as a baby, I started disliking them as a young teenager and still dont like them as an adult.
Imagine a war ended, not by a bomb or some horrifying weapon or even an unconditional surrender, but a baby's cry.
Even the soldier who yelled the others to cease fire deserved the Oscar.

Sometimes it's good to remind yourself "oh, they're all just actors, none of them died and there's no harm done" but god how everything in this movie is put together makes the scene so damn authentic and depressing. You can tell Alfonso is a great director cause he directed the extras excellently, they all look so dejected and devoid of joy, desensitised to war and death, until they see a baby.. And they light up, almost not knowing what the hell they're actually seeing, it legit looks like some of them can't even believe it. And even if the scene resumes, many people in that building died, they were all graced with the greatest sight of hope which is seeing a baby, and that was probably all they needed for just some ounce of peace.
The scene tears me tf up cause for a brief moment it felt like everyone, refugees, freedom fighters and soldiers alike, was given a few minutes just to be the most human they've ever been in that cursed place

I also think it's a bad idea to fire an RPG inside a building, an enclosed space, a recoilless rifle, in a room, with alot of people probably.
I remember watching this scene for the first time and feeling emotional. Its almost transcendent, how biblical this scene seemed to me. The reverence radiated by the soldiers and bystanders alike with the score just completed the picture of the Son of Man descending into chaos once more to become a flicker of hope to those lost in pain and hopelessness.
Judging by how this movie was filmed you can tell it was directed by Alfonso Cuaron he did a great job with Harry Potter and the prisoner of Askaban also.

Funny how Time rewards...just think of this: "children of men", "Babel" and "Pan's labyrinth" were on theaters the same year and the academy only gave some "meh" nominations for these three masterpieces, only few back then realized that many geniouses were just getting warmed up for the entire world to see and witness their true genius...i'm talking about Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Alfonso Cuarón, Guillermo Del Toro, Emmanuel Lubezki, Rodrigo Prieto, Guillermo Navarro...Man, pure gold just getting in shape. Cheers for all cinema lovers and new talents enthusiasts !

This film feels more like 'The Last Of Us' to me. A guy has to get a girl who is carrying humanity's last hope for salvation across the country to the only people who can help, while avoiding multiple individuals who would do them harm. E P I C !

To think The only sound to stop a war dead on its tracks is the cry of a baby that hasn't been born in years. The look of disbelief and awe as the literal incarnation of hope is there before their very eyes in a world thrown into chaos. The only word I could use to describe this scene is biblical. Sends shivers down my spine every time I watch it.
The fact people were straight up willing to be shot just to catch a glimpse of the baby

Me too man. It's like a reflection of the world today. Deep down we feel like this is how we treat each other and maybe all of us are hoping for the baby to give us just one sign of hope.

Eh, shooting that missile near a the first baby in many years is kind of a stupid thing to do. The whole war basically began because of a lack of children and resources.

All throughout this scene you're watching countless lives lost, yet every person stands still at the sight of the newborn. The newborn promises hope. Future. Untainted by the ugliness those around her have grown to accept as reality. Stunning scene.
2021 and I think we will live like this in near future
This is truly one of the strongest scenes in cinema.
Even though this scene is a work Of fiction, it still makes me tear up every time I see it. Something about this scene is so rawfully human, I don’t think I’ve ever seen something like it in cinema or tv. Beautiful movie.
It’s beautiful and heartbreaking to realize that every baby born today is just as precious as that baby.
