    Hi Dean, welcome back. I have the Rage 5s which I will now be selling & going for the R255 TBL+ plus model. However, I noticed that the riving knife was very high & although mentioned, we never got to see the the crown guard. Great first impressions, well done.

    • @WoodworkJourney
      @WoodworkJourney  Před 4 měsíci +3

      It seems I forgot to add that bit in the edit! The crown guard is fairly straight forward and nothing overly special. The riving knife is high for it, but in the manual it showed the riving knife can be lowered - I don’t know if mine doesn’t because it’s not the plus, or because it’s pre-production, but I wasn’t able to speak to Evolution about it due to Easter. I’ll update when I know more though

    I just have a little hobby shop and am now looking to upgrade my Ryobi table saw which to be honest is pretty much a crap beginners saw at best. I had ordered a Skill saw but something got messed up on the delivery. Maybe that’s a good thing. While the Skill gets great reviews I love a few features on this baby. Now you review a pre production saw. I’m hoping maybe what I’ll get might have a few more improvements . I saw a review on other older models and those saws were crap in comparison. Thank you for the good video. I’m convinced this will work for me better than the red saw.

    Rage 5s owner here. I'd love the new + model but it's not justified. I've removed my 5s from the stand and fixed it onto the end of my workbench which is what i'd do with a new one.
    Evolution have packed in some features and improvements with this new saw and for a more than competitive price.
    You're looking well Dean, glad everything is coming together. 👌🏻

    I've pre-ordered this table saw and ordered some saxton blades that are flat tooth and made for the evolution saw without reducer rings. These are supposed to be 2.9mm and not 6mm like the cmt but they are 255mm so even with a sled you have higher cutting capacity. Will have to do more laps when grooving/dadoing but you can leave it there for everything else.

    • @WoodworkJourney
      @WoodworkJourney  Před 4 měsíci

      Big old thick blades can make a bit of a mess of some wood when through cutting but I hope you like it, and importantly I hope you like the saw!

    Your video was the final nudge I needed to make my mind up.. Saw arrived today and it is all the excellent things you mention. Absolutely over the moon with. it. Thanks for the advice. The only tiny letdown is the Evolution say their Zero Clearance Throat Plate is not expected before October/November. 3rd party plates are available on ebay (plastic) but I think I. will wait for the real thing.

    Can you please make in future video about dado blades on this saw, and it would be useful to see how to calibrate it to perfect squares.

    • @gbwildlifeuk8269
      @gbwildlifeuk8269 Před 3 měsíci

      @RPserge you cant fit dado blades to saw tables imported to the UK. The reason is our health & safety executive consider them too dangerous for use on saw tables intended for non professional use. Dado blades are available but only for professional saws with electric breaking and other refinements.
      Imported saws do not have arbours long enough to allow dado blade fitting. If they made saws with longer arbours and a dado blade was fitted, resulting in injury, the saw manufacturer would be liable. Therefore they play safe.
      The alternative saws cost thousands and usually require 3 phase power.

    Nice 'first impressions' vid, Dean 👍 Look forward to the more in-depth review and the others but, what with everything else going on, remember to pace yourself and take it easy.
    Just a thought on the non-magnetic surface and magnetic accessories - presumably you could attach a suitably-sized, magnet-friendly, metal plate to a mitre-slot runner and/or t-bar clamp(s) and once firmly in position, attach those accessories to that plate? Wouldn't be a solution for everything or every situation but might be useful for things like magswitch feather boards and the like.

    • @WoodworkJourney
      @WoodworkJourney  Před 4 měsíci

      The long term review will definitely be after a fair few months of use so not rushing that bad boy!
      Good idea about using the mitre slots, but to be honest there are other mechanical options that use those better. The magnet is just helpful because it can go anywhere

    Dean, glad to see you. NIce review. However, I thought we were doing rehabs on good old saws; what's up? Nice review. Well you throw around 300 mil and then a 1/1000 of an inch...what? Your point about the dado blade is well taken. The good news for you is that you can take one of your table saws and install the dado blade as a semi-permanent solution. Once I can afford another saw, this is what I plan on doing. It only depends then on what thickness of lumber one works with to make the initial set-up.

    Seems like the very popular Dewalt saw that is a good chunk more than this saw and has me looking at the new cast top Laguna that has come up for £1100 has serious competition here!
    Looking at the upper spec one being listed at £450 this seems excellent value. Would love to know how easy getting the blade aligned with the mitre slots is as that always seems to be the toughest bit with these site saws. Can’t wait for the future videos as this is a serious contender for a workshop addition!

    • @WoodworkJourney
      @WoodworkJourney  Před 4 měsíci

      Super easy on this saw, there’s an adjuster just for that job. The Dewalt and Laguna are apples to oranges though, site saws like these still offer great value but not comparable to a cabinet saw

    • @reithryll
      @reithryll Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@WoodworkJourney I know the Laguna is a different beast but the price step from the Dewalt to that is the same as the difference between this and the Dewalt making this a very attractive option to see if a table saw is a tool I will use a lot or not.

    Would be interesting to see a side by side review/comparison with the Rutland which is essentially identical except the Evo has the added sled but the Rutland has a stronger motor I think? And it is slightly cheaper, I like the riving knife feature on the Evo as with ones that require removing bolts I tend to never put them back once I've had it off and lost it (raked the weeds out of the patio with it), with the £30 or so price difference and my experience with the blade on my Evo chop saw I think I might get the Evo over the Rutland, seems a no brainer really but without seeing them side by side you never know which is out on top with precision and overall work load handling.

    Hi Dean, Nice saw and nice review. Do you have to buy Evolution's blades only to have waranty on the product ( Just as the Rage 5S )? Does waranty works with blades from Bosch/Freud or CMT or others ? I agree that there are some differences ( motor's RPMs, arbor size- not a good idea for me ) but there are a lot of things in common with SKIL or ERBAUER. If it doen't come from the same factory in China, it's just coming from next door's factory...😂😂😂

    Nice saw overall but I have one problem with Evolution tools.. It's their Disc Bore Size they use (25,4mm) as I remember. I have miter saw from Evolution and it was paint in but to switch to other saw blades... I had to use some reduction ring which wasn't that stable at all as proper size bore blade. I see same saw blade here which probably mean the same problem.. They force you to purchase they branded blades for it. Beside that it does not have stop brake and that blade spins way way too long after cut of the power. It's not safe. But you mentioned it's a pre-production model so hopefully they will include some brake stop in final build.

    • @WoodworkJourney
      @WoodworkJourney  Před 4 měsíci

      I mentioned in the video that adapter rings are necessary for normal bore blades, and that’s fine as the large washer before the nut holds the blade and that’s outside if the reduction ring

    Hey Dean, does the fence offer the same cutting capacity if you move it over to the left of the blade? Does the rack and pinion system go the same distance the other way? For some reason I feel much safer doing stuff over that side so I can be out of the way of any kickback but still use my right hand easily to push stuff through the cut.

    Are they made in the UK? I know the HQ is based in Sheffield but unable to work out if this product is made there or if they have outsourced production to China or elsewhere? I want to purchase British made products but so hard to find out from all the tool suppliers which products are and are not British made. Maybe an idea for future blog?

    • @WoodworkJourney
      @WoodworkJourney  Před 4 měsíci

      I believe the evolution company is UK but the product is manufactured in China. I’ve talked about UK made stuff in the past and unfortunately very few tool makers still manufacture here. I don’t believe there’s a UK company that manufactures machinery like table saws, bandsaws, pillar drills etc any more. I love old UK made machinery but they mostly require renovation etc which can be costly. Currently though, the UK has a couple of companies for hand saws and a few manual tools, but no big stuff as far as I’m aware sadly, I think Record Power may have been the last to manufacture here.
      Sadly it’s just not cost effective to produce here any more.

    Nice review of the saw however a couple of points, you did not show the guard attached and as you know that is likely the most important safety feature of a ‘table saw’ along with the push stick. Likewise there does not appear to be any pre drilled holes to attach an auxiliary fence or the ability to slide the fence back for when cutting solid timber as opposed sheet materials, very important as the fence when ripping solid timber should not go past the gullet of the blade at bench level. I have watched the video on the evolution web site and a little disappointed that the user clearly has his left hand closer than 300mm to the blade. The guard whilst looking slightly flimsy is better than using without, I guess for the money it's what you expect. With the noise from the saw, pretty much all seem to be loud as there is very little surrounding material to help absorb it, like you said wear ear defenders at all times, I like you suffer from the ringing in my ears, from an era when ppe was not enforced quite as it should have been. It does look similar to the Rutlands saw with the main difference of the sliding table.

    • @WoodworkJourney
      @WoodworkJourney  Před 4 měsíci

      I don’t believe a crown guard to be ‘The most important safety feature of a table saw’, that would be the riving knife in my opinion as well as a well set up fence and accurate blade. I don’t understand what you mean about the the fence when cutting solid timber, everything seems straight forward and normal to me
