Urbex: The Blue Ghost Tunnel (April 2012)

- Exploring the infamous Blue Ghost Tunnel (BGT) in Thorold, Ontario with an EMF iPhone app (for fun). If interested in this app, it's called Ghost Hunter M2.
A Brief History: The BGT is well-known for having a high paranormal activity level, and therefore, a popular place to investigate in Ontario. The tunnel is 665 feet long, 713 feet long with the winged stoned edges. It took a year to build and was complete in 1876. It was an underground rail tunnel, now abandoned, which went under the third welland canal between locks 18 and 19. In years gone by, there have been a number of fatalities in the vicinity of the tunnel which many feel are what haunt it today. In 1903, there was a train collision 100 yards west of the west entrance killing two firemen who manned the boilers on each train. In 1915, the last train used this tunnel due to the new swing bridge with double rails that went over the third canal. In 1923, there was a calling for the graves in a nearby cemetery to be moved to another nearby cemetery as the construction of the new fourth Welland Canal (current one) would need to occupy its space for a pondage area or reservoir. 250 graves were moved leaving 613 behind to be flooded over with water. They still remain under the pondage area near the tunnel and pumphouse to this day. In August 6, 1928, eight men were killed while working on lock 6 of the new fourth Welland Canal. Ironically, two years later on the exact date of August 6, 1930, eight more men were killed at the same location.

What a great video! My great great great grandparents were buried where you were speaking of. They were moved to a cemetery in Ridgeway. Thanks for map showing the area where the cemetery was/is. The photos you captured in the tunnel were excellent! I had never heard of the place until you investigated it. Thanks for providing some historical significance to your video. Was that mist at approximately 2:10? It looked like a still shot, grayer than the video before and after. It also looked to me like a charging human (male) presence about to wrap his arms around you. Not in a good way, either.
Was there a dog with you? A couple times, I heard what sounded like a jangling dog collar.

+Geetha Ortac I think I heard something around 9:43 or 9:44 but I had earphones on. It's not very loud but it's a weird sound right before the EMF spikes
That is absolutely fascinating! I definitely heard at 4:38 bumps, crashes, metal pipes dropping, and whispers, and what sounded like a whip at 11:38, and a loud whisper 'Hi', at 13:40! Very active for sure. Three thumbs up.
I heard the whip and the whispered 'Hi', but I just assumed the first sound was them kicking lose rock and it tumbling into the water. So creepy, good ear!
Also at 13:22 you hear something say "This sucks" or something along that line
13:40 was one of them breathing in...

Not sure if you know this but IF there is any paranormal activity, night or day has no bearing on it. Also, the walls will amplify any sound with the acoustics of the stone and water.
OH MY GOD you actually explored the blue ghost tunnel? i live in Thorold, been there a few times when i was a kid with my father, they closed it up unfortunately. wow i cant believe you came to Thorold, you are like one of my favorite urbexers :)

My family lived in Thorold, I was born in St. Catharines along with my sister. My Dad had to move around a lot when he worked for Hydro before he became a teacher and settled in Arnprior where my Mother was from. We lived in Thorold for a couple of years but I don't remember it, but this is so interesting to see. Even though I don't believe in anything supernatural at all, I still get a kick out of this stuff! Thanks for showing.
Oh and again, my kids thought you were me talking. You're apparently my "voice twin!" Lol

It's just that I have done a lot of Genealogy "stuff" the last few years and seeing the actual cemetery on the map really helped. Again, I love your work and the narrations. Not to mention you are virtually "unflappable" when confronted with something unknown or unexpected. I think I have uttered one or two "holy shits" when watching on my computer! LOL. Have a good day!

At roughly 11:36 in the video I heard a "whoosh" sound, it was quick and I not sure what that was. Those pictures are interesting too, one looked like a figure with a head floating around, neat video. Thanks for sharing! :)
I have a feeling the thumping might be the water hitting something. It sounded like a pump of some sort. They might have put a pump in there for the water control. It also sounded like you had a raccoon in there. Be careful. They can be mean.
limestone and water tends to hold energy so that is probably all that was setting off the emf app.. but cool video.:-) thank you for sharing:-)

I live about 15 minutes away from this tunnel. Oddly though i have never wen't to it. We have some pretty cool ghost stories here in Niagara. The screaming tunnel, I've been to that late a night and two other people were there and scared the crap out of us lol

I've never claimed to be a ghost hunter nor want to be one which is clearly shown on my channel as the other videos aren't about ghost investigations. We were just trying out a phone ap meter in this video.

When me and my two buddies were offloading and randomly came across this tunnel we had no idea what it was or it's history being from Hamilton but when we were there the only way in was that little square hole we made very poor torches out of stuff in his trunk like socks sticks and wd40 I believe as you can imagine they did not last long in the tunnel we made it quite far when they died out I had a digital camera and took a bunch of photos (this was easily in the early 2000s)before we started hearing some strange voices?sounds and a very oppressive feeling needless to say we all got the same idea at the same time to take off as fast as possible and get out through that rather small square hole,you definitely came prepared equipment wise and info good stuff I really wanted to get a better look at that tunnel and stuff good stuff

That gives me the creeps...I do believe in paranormal stuff though. Every place is haunted by its history. Your are probably the bravest youtuber out there. I know a couple of other you tubers who go into abandoned places that would of run away screaming from this place

Tiki Some times you can't hear what sounds you are picking up while you are recording. Also you should take a lot of stills and see if you pick up anything. Another thing is if you can put a camera in an area so when you walk out of a room you might find movement or sounds. A lot of people say that when they do something like this it take days like 2 or 3. before they pick something up. The emf meter was awesome thank you. You don't have to go at night and NEVER alone if you do. Also Never use a ouija board you open up doors you don't want and can't close. I love this kind of thing and have lived in a lot of old houses over a hundred years old. My Father loves them. I wish this had been available when I was a kid My Dad would have really gotten into it. I just got into watching your videos a few days ago and CAN'T stop! LOL its like looking into a box and I can't pick just one to watch. Thank you for so much fun!

Just before you stop in the tunnel,& started back there wherd reflectsions of eyes in the roof of the tumnel. What where the eyes reflecting your light ?

Good lord little gal, you're not scared of nothing are you, ... Hell, I'm 6' 2" @ 350 and wouldn't go into half the places that you march your little tail right off into like it's nothing. Sure, no problem. Yes, somebody was with me. This was explored a few years ago now.
The last time I was there, 2005, the entrance was not blocked up. You could just walk right on in.

Did you hear "Go back" just before the EMF meter jumped the first time? Cool! I heard it a few more times...someone just saying "Go back, go back, go back"...

The last time I visited the BGT was 2008... hasn't changed much...more vandalism. It was really awesome before they blocked the entrance.
Just went there tonight its creepy at night but there was some guys having a fire right there so it was kind comforting that they were there . Plus there was no door on there not anymore anyway . Freaking creepy as hell !

I really enjoy your videos. I used to be a guard at an old winery and I would sometimes hear some strange things, but never saw a ghost.
I recommend a better flashlight, possibly the Surefire Fury. It's small and easy to carry while putting out way more light at a further distance.
I hope to see more haunted places. :-)
Did anyone hear something around 9:43 or 9:44 right before the EMF meter spiked? I replayed that section several times so I know I heard something. Is there a road or highway nearby? Its not very loud so you have to listen carefully but I heard it with headphones on. It's a really weird sound.
+TheCanadiangirl4 It sounds like a whimper. This tunnel is haunted by 4 dogs, and apparently a cat too. Maybe it was a meow or a dog whimpering?
William Viman It definitely could be some sort of animal. I'd imagine they would go in there for shelter.

ive gone in there with 3 friends and one deiced to light white candles we found at least 200 all over the edges and posts he lit 4 and when we left we all took pictures and we seen faces on the wall in the candle light it was creppy when we went back the 4 candles he lit were gone they didnt notice how sever it was the 1 candle by the wall was still there then a void of r candles and the other two going aeay from the wall were still there so why only our 4 candles were gone i have no idea they suggested that other tunnel go'ers moved thembut why only four and not take out the whole line what possess them to do it or w what actually moved them

I thought u were alone... then ur friend said "hello" and my heart skipped 3 beats and then beat 12 times super fast to catch up... lol! I thought there was someone there in the dark going to get u. I don't believe in ghosts, but I know evil spirits can inhabit places and people. I just steer clear of places like that. Glad ur safe :)

I find nothing unusual (EVP) wise on this one Pam, but it is a tough one with all the background/ambient noise. I have done many "ghost" investigations for people, I am not a professional like TAPS, but I do have EVP, EMF and audio software for cleaning up and isolating audio events. I have had many odd experiences and captures on tape. Don't put too much faith in the EMF app. The phone does not have an actual EMF antenna, I think the basically are like a random number generator. Have had one reading like yours was sitting next to my actual EMF reading 0. Was interesting how your son started to get nervous though when it was reading higher, that is one sign of actual high EMF exposer. PS - Don't joke about Ouija boards! Never touched one and never will, nasty things can happen!!
Just reread my comm. and just want to say I did not mean to sound negative! There are just too many variables in this one to get a good analysis. Rocks, running water, steel can all affect EMF. And was a lot of sound clutter. I did hear the "banging" you mentioned . It could be a train sound, or steps. It was at a steady amplitude and freq. whuch tends to tell me it was a water drip. The paranormal I do believe in, there is something "energies, etc" we do not understand!!

If you're wearing headphones, you can hear like an echo of a womans voice talking randomly when she's walking through the tunnel. Idk If it's something else but it totally sounds like spurts of sounds coming from a woman

I dont believe in being or spirits, i feel there is explanations for everything, the core of our earth is a magnet which makes all those gadgets move. I would think it would b against the law 2 'flood' unmoved graves. Keep having safe fun.
