  • We are decluttering and organizing one of my favorite rooms...THE KITCHEN! I talk about some of the things I have learned both from Marie Kondo (The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up) and Dana K. White (A Slob Comes Clean) when it comes to decluttering and organizing. They both have different approaches to clutter and I think there is value in each approach. Whose methods do you prefer? Dana, Marie, or someone else?

    A friend of mine calls ‘awkward pauses’ habit stacking. It’s the only way I can get my kitchen clean- I do stuff when I’m waiting for other things to happen like the washing to be done or the kettle to boil. Can recommend! Especially if a person has executive dysfunction.

    Definitely Dana K. White. You mentioned that Moira was overwhelmed. Pulling out all of the cupboards at one time was very messy and too overwhelming for Moira (also for me to watch). I had tried the Marie Kondo method. It can take days to go through all of the same type items to declutter and put away. One is living with mess and disorder. "I" do not do well with piles of clutter (disorder) as in the Kondo decluttering method.
    There is no overwhelm disorder in Dana K. White's decluttering method.You are able to stop at anytime with leaving no mess. Recently I decluttered and reorganized a kitchen drawer. It only took me under ten minutes to do this. DKW's method was very efficient, orderly, and with no mess. I did this before going to work in the morning. I knew that I had only about fifteen minutes before I needed to leave for work; so the task was completed with ease and no mess. I 've also used the same method for my food pantry. I cleared /cleared/reorganized one shelf at a time. I'm using her decluttering method throughout my home. I think that we all are finding out what methods individually work best for us.

    • @ABeautifulMessExtremeCle-zl1wp
      @ABeautifulMessExtremeCle-zl1wp  Před 5 měsíci +5

      I think DKWs methods work best for the majority of people. I do like Marie Kondo's method if there is a time limit to it and it doesn't drag on for weeks or months with the disorder. I actually forgot to mention in the video that Mariah at one point said that she could see why the Marie Kondo method is necessary in some places, especially when things have gotten stored in random places, so by pulling everything out, you can see all that you have and declutter it all at once. I suppose that still would work with Dana's methods, but you would end up finding some of those items later in the decluttering process and have to decide if there is space for those items and either do the one in one out rule or get rid of the item. Since I knew that we had two days to do this and there was going to be an end to it, I thought Marie Kondo's methods would work best for this situation, but moving forward, I think she should use Dana's methods when she is decluttering on her own.😊❤️

I go through mine every three months and throw away or donate, it’s helped so much. I’m only 4’10”, can’t reach the top shelf of my cupboards even with a stool so anything on those shelves went as they never get used anyways. We tend to save things that we only use during the holidays so I put those few things on a shelf in my basement. IMPORTANT: I like the fact that Mariah uses plastic again and again instead of buying new stuff all the time, but it is not hazard-free. Over time the softener in the plastic dissolves by itself and that can cause terrible health issues! I guess it is impossible to read all the comments, but I really hope this one will reach you. Apart from that it was again a great job and a pleasing video! You are a wonderful person, Bonnie! ❤

      I do read all of my comments, actually. For now, anyway.😄 Someday it might not be possible. 🤔I agree with you on this point and have heard that it can be really bad to use plastic over and over and wanted to gather a little more information regarding this to show her because I know it would devastate her to have to just discard all of that plasticware, but I think, for her own health, it might be wise to do so even if it can't be recycled. But I do admire that she is doing everything in her power to be responsible about recycling. I think she can give herself a little grace and maybe toss the plasticware. Thank you for bringing this up!❤️

      I can only confirm andruschka's concerns. Plastic containers often contain phthalates, which have been proven to damage the endocrine system (causing diabetes, obesity or fertility problems) and to cause cancer. Fat from cheese or sausage can dissolve the plasticizer out of the plastic. Colorants can contain heavy metals that cause long-term damage to the nervous system. Who knows how many mental illnesses are at least exacerbated by plastic use? Retail packaging is only made for short-term use and the dose of toxins ingested is usually low. But if they are used regularly, especially for hot or fatty foods, the safe dose can be exceeded.
      Instead of buying coffee to go, it would be better to sit down for a coffee in a cafe or diner. Less hectic, more deceleration is also good for the mind.

      It sounds like we need to both go watch a documentary on Plastics and microplastics and how they affect our health. Maybe then she will be willing to toss everything and just vow not to get any more from here on out.😊

    • @schnetzelschwester
      @schnetzelschwester Před 5 měsíci

      @@ABeautifulMessExtremeCle-zl1wp Plastic is not always the devil's stuff if it is used appropriately. There are containers made of food-safe plastic that are designed for food storage, like tupperware. These are labeled with a spoon and fork icon, and often labeled as microwave or freezer safe. Plastic retail packaging is not food safe. If she has concerns about the environment, she should avoid buying goods in such packaging if possible. I prefer goods in cardboard packaging, tin cans or glass. They are either easy to recycle or easy to clean.
      It's hard to keep a house tidy and clean when there's so much stuff around. I have a single cupboard compartment reserved for empty canning jars. When it's full, I have to throw something away. I've thrown away all the disposable plates and cutlery because I'll never have any use for them. I've gotten out of the habit of hoarding things just in case. If I actually need something like that, I buy it new and don't use worn and dirty things. I'm unemployed, but not that poor.

    I still nest my Tupperware, but it is at least in same shape stacks, circles, rectangles, squares. I do store the lids in vertical rows, by size, in a deep drawer. Not a lot of cabinet space and I do go through things two or three times a year. I’m 5’8” so I Do use the upper shelves of cabinets, however, with age and arthritis, I moved the crock-pot, broiler pans, big stock pots etc to the bottom shelves and put things like paper bags, trash bags, and other light items that won’t give me a concussion or broken foot if it slips out of my hands!🤣

      I did the same. I put the items on the upper shelves in cardboard boxes from my husband's amazon-addiction that I have covered with nice wrapping paper. I attached small loops of ribbon to the bottom of the front. This allows me to hold the box by the loop when pulling it out. Then I can take out or put in the stored items whithout getting an avalanche of stuff on my head. To put the box back I just push it on the shelf, no need to climb a ladder.

    I like using the dish pans for organizing also. I used to have a front loader washer and dryer with pedestals .I switched to an older top loader set because my other washer broke and I hated the front loader. I lost the massive storage space of the pedestals. I bought 2 slim cabinets to fit the available space .I put one in front of the other turning the one in the rear backwards with the back left open. I aligned the shelves to the same heights .I put a dishpan in the back cabinet to hold things that I need to keep but use rarely. I have a label on the door to identify what is in the back storage.

    My idea is if you get something, you give/donate something. Only keep seasonal stuff, if not used in last 3 months, lose it. Plastic is kept to a minimum for giving away food. Of course my bottles are neat and tidy in boxes and the lids are kept together along side them. My junk drawer had become overwhelming for a while, but today it’s almost empty. Like stuff belongs together. I use mostly baking spices and keep my measuring cups and spoons in the drawer with my cutlery, right on hand.

    I was so inspired by your organizing I did two drawers and took everything out of two cabinets then came back to watch the end of your video. I had to ask the hubs to take down the stuff in the top shelves because my knees are still recovering and I am in a walker. Of course he wants to keep every jar because ‘when we garden next year we will can’. Well crud his idea of ‘we’ is only harvesting. I do the planting, fertilizing, watering and weeding. I’m not taking on canning. He thinks you just put it in the jars and won’t listen when I try to tell him the process. My parents used to can. He’ll give everyone botulism, I’m putting all those jars in the recycling.😃
    Anyway thank you for this video, love your organizing.🙂

    Thanks for showing the little pics of the cleaning products you use. I know it takes you extra time to do that, but I appreciate it. I also wanted to mention that part of being friendlier to the environment is REDUCING. Reduce what we buy and what we have. I've mentioned before, Americans have too much stuff. Less is more to a clearer life view.

      I agree. All that plastic has already been manufactured and purchased. Letting it sit in your cabinet unused isnt taking it away from the environment. Dispose of it and vow to not buy more in the future. Reduce being a consumer. 😊

    You did an amazing job! It will be so much easier for her to use the kitchen now! ❤
    I think decluttering Dana's way is useful for doing things on your own as you dont make a big mess and get overwhelmed and feel like you made your house worse and run out of energy before you finish! But if you have help then its not so bad to pull things out and see it all before it goes back in, that can sometimes be a bit quicker for a big declutter blitz!
    I love Dana's way of giving things a home by asking where you'd look for it first if you needed it! Then when you go looking you actually find things! 😊

    • @ABeautifulMessExtremeCle-zl1wp
      @ABeautifulMessExtremeCle-zl1wp  Před 5 měsíci

      That was my exact thought process. I knew we had two days to get this done and that there would be an end to it, so I thought Marie Kondo's method would work best in this situation, but going forward, I totally agree she should just use Dana's methods so she doesn't get too overwhelmed.

    Great job, Bonnie! This was very enjoyable to witness your organizational skills. I'm with you on keeping the lids on the Tupperware type food storage containers. For my tupperware, I bought the 'Rubbermaid EZ lid' I think it is. Now I should remember because I've bought at least 3 sets but a LOT went to other people's homes, not by choice. But, I finally one day dug out everything like you did here, however, I did nest my tupperware because of the lids. It's a 36 piece tupperware set and for me, I have all lids stacked by size. I have the 'bigger' tupperware-like for baking stuff-carrying cupcakes or cakes etc. at the top of our corner cabinet. The middle shelf, it has our big and medium lids on the left side (all matching and they nest and 'click' together, no losing lids, the smaller lids to the right side of those. Then bowls are all nested together as well. I do rinse out all plates/bowls, tupperware each time we use them for any dust that might be in them.Just easier for me with *all* my tupperware on one shelf. So, I have one shelf with *all* matching tupperware, then the top shelf has tupperware of different 'big' sizes that I don't use on a daily basis but it's there for when I need it. Bottom shelf is just plates, bowls for our corner shelf. I did toss a TON of tupperware years ago though after going through what felt like hundreds of pieces. Thank goodness, someone came by and picked it all up for me. Whew.

    Bonnie, thanks for reminding me to take care of that one crazy disorganized drawer in my kitchen. Way too much unused plastic and other stuff which need to leave the house.
    As I hate the feeling of plastic cutlery in my mouth and because of micro plastic I have a set of ordinary silverware in my car for use. In Germany they started using bamboo cutlery and plates made from banana leaves even years ago. Unfortunately plastic cutlery is still available and more common.
    My favorite material for storing food is glass, reusing glass jars makes me feel better. Even cleaning is so much easier, imagine tomatoe sauce or anything with garlic or any indian spices in a plastic container... 😂
    The german word for lazy Susan is Drehteller which is the word by word translation of turning table.

    I'd throw in Mack's move out move in method. For something who has a lot of stuff it may be too overwhelming but when I did it I moved back in just the essentials that I use frequently, that fit in the container, and then items that sparked joy. It really helped me make a decision on items I waffled on.

      So, funny story. A couple of other people suggested this as well and so I did that with another video where I shot from two different angles and then realized that one of the cameras doesn't even pick up sound, so I couldn't sync it by sound, but it was helpful to have the clap that I could see clearly and try to sync it to that. It did make it slightly easier.😄

    Mom always called our corner turner-thingie the "Twirly Cabinet"... so guess what I call ours? I agree with storing lids on the storage containers. We keep ours in the Twirly Cabinet. The problem of loose lids is that they fall off the shelves, and then get under the shelves, lost for eternity. So, If only I could train my otherhalf to put the lids on too, our twirly cabinet would be much neater, and easier to navigate!
