That's some pretty fast sawing,, I never heard my daddy say how many they done in a day but im sure it was a lot slower back then, He got out of the sawmill business not long after i was born and that was 67 years ago, A lot has changed since then.

That’s some fast cutting! Nice that you get every board out of the slab. Can you say how much a White Oak tie is worth- or is it one of those “ if I told you I’d have to k... you!😂🇺🇸

@burntchurch In Ohio, I have to pay .50bf for low-grade logs. Not much room for profit. The knots on the ties cannot be no more than 1/3 the size of the face. No knots in the rail bearing area. I can't find buyers for ties. Where do you sell your ties?

Another thing with just two of you working is that you're not spring chicken either. You've got to slow down.. I have my granddaddys 2 man saw and his broad axe 🪓. He used to cut the logs and take them down to the river with his mules. I remember him telling me how he to that axe and made the ties. After a while, he worked, laying track for the railroad. He died in the late 90s. Seems like yesterday. Enjoyed the video. Liked to see Guard Dog BoBo.

That was a great story really enjoyed hearing it thank you..Its hard to imagine how hard they worked back then Hewing them crossties with a axe would be a rough job

@burntchurch you know, he talked like it was just another day , in his life back then. Before he died, he was in a nursing home, and he'd be in the bed and go through the motion of hueing those logs. Explaining every motion to me. Wish I had listened more to every word he said.

The place they worked out of was Carters Wharf on the Rappahannock River, Richmond County, Virginia.. I went online just a couple of months ago and found alot of things about it.
