It's a personal story for Mark Knopfler, about his failed relationship with Holly Beth Vincent who was a brief member of the new wave group The Waitresses. Mark was a bit burnt by the experience, he helped her career get moving. "And I dreamed your dream for you and now your dream is real

@@ChestCrystal He writes so much about people and places in the UK and historical figures and events. This is the only song I can think of where he writes about his love life, and it’s beautiful to see that side of him. His talent is otherworldly.

One if most beautiful songs ever from the master Mark Knopfler, there are other versions of this live too, one with Mark playing gorgeous electric guitar outro too, and a lovely version from him solo from the concert A Night in London.
I have listened to music all world ,from country to heavy metal ,to rap and back. Mark knofler is an absolute goat when it comes to the gutar. He is out of our world and grip. I heard that he use to fall asleep with his gutars.no wonder they play like they do

Not sure if i'm right, but I think the soft intro is deliberately improvised so as to tease the audience and keep them guessing as to what song it's gonna be. When the audience recognise the song/s opening bars, they respond with great approval! I've noticed the same thing with a live version of "Her Latest Trick". Give that one a go, I know you'll enjoy!
