    My son's favorite game is Galaxy Trucker. He was easier to teach the game to than most adults.

      That is a great recommendation! I think I last played it when my kids were just babies, so it didn't cross my mind today. It's a great app, too! (Also, when I last played it, I was the advisor of the high school "tabletop club" so I did get to play it with teenagers. They liked it a lot.)

    Thanks for the fresh takes Ben, very much looking forward to getting Role Player and Via Nebula to the table when my kids are older.

    I really like the idea of 5 tribes, my daughter is nearly 7 so I'll probably save buying it until she is 8 maybe.
    Removing the bidding is a good idea.

    I prefer Dinogenics with the Controlled Chaos expansion but still a great game to play with younger gamers. Great choice if I do say so myself. 😎

      Cool. I had originally chosen Dinosaur Island, but someone dropped a hint that Dinogenics is just as good but more intuitive. I tried it out: they were so right!

    Great video! I like your number 1 pick though I’m not sure if my 7yo would be able to get it yet. Lots of crunchy decisions and math. We might try Mechs vs Minions soon! I bought it 4 years ago 😂 and have been waiting for the day to introduce it to my kids.

      I should have mentioned this in the video, but the market phase isn’t entirely necessary. You can just do the dice drafting. When you play the full game, lower value dice determine the order of purchasing in the market. I would make it so they determine draft order for the following round.
      Without a market phase, the game is much more similar to Sagrada but with actions that let you move/alter dice after they are placed.

    I realize this is a late comment, but we've had a few bangers hit the table as of late. I was looking for a game to replace racing type stalwarts, such as Candy Land, Trouble, and Sorry. I recall you telling me that you avoid games with "take that" such as TTR, but my kids are ruthless gamers who crave blood it seems. I landed on a nice little gem called Jamaica. It's a pirate racing game that allows battles. The racing gives the kids a clear cut goal to work toward, gives them ability to take down other players without ruining their chances to win, and is just a lot of fun to play. I don't hear much about Jamaica because it's a little older of a game, but I'm glad I came across it. I also took your advice on Quest of El Dorado, though it was a little hard to find (I had to order it from Finland). El Dorado hasn't hit the table yet, but I think it'll be a hit with them as well. Really enjoy your content, it really helps us dads.

      I looked at Jamaica a while back, wasn’t too excited about it. Looks like it might be hard to find now.
      If your kids are out for blood as you say, take a look at Kabuto Sumo. I was playing it with my kids last night and was thinking: “this game might be too competitive for them.”

      Thank you for your kind words. I’m trying to strike the right balance between games to play “with the kids” vs those I enjoy playing “with the dads”. Got another family game review coming up: Holotype.

    I would like to buy the game evolution. Which version is best? Climate, Oceans, or bas Evolution? Thanks

    • @theperfectboardgame
      @theperfectboardgame  Před 2 lety +1

      I haven’t played Oceans but between Climate and the base game, I think the base game is the most stripped down which is best for the kids. I played Climate at my gaming group and it is designed to require greater adaptability. During the game we played, it just so happened that the climate was not very eventful (there is some luck involved) so it fell flat on me. I’m probably not the best judge on this one.

    I feel like most of these are pretty complex for under 12 to really appreciate the gameplay. Is that true?

    • @theperfectboardgame
      @theperfectboardgame  Před 2 lety +2

      I love this question. It makes me want to make a video entitled “Should you play too-complex games with your younger kids?” (…or something like that.) My eight year old can handle all of these games, sometimes with accommodations. My six year old struggles with about half of them. These games are the very upper bound for younger kids, like I said in the intro. However, it is my personal opinion that these games are excellent for their development. I think the reason my eight y.o. can handle these games is because since she has been playing similar games since she was five. But if it’s a concern, you might want to watch my “family” game list, instead.

      @@theperfectboardgame I also have doubts (of course my personal opinion only) that I don't think my children can handle this until they are much older...but well they are only 5 now so will see how things go...

      I played it online multiple times after another recommendation from a viewer. Online is not the same thing, but I did learn what I needed to learn about it: while I appreciated the design/mechanics of the game and I generally love games where no one “owns” anything but bids during gameplay, the game is brutal: a good player will when when they can block other cars. Even though you can change your bids later, earlier bids are worth more so it can feel devastating when you get blocked and can’t make a come back. I didn’t like it, though, to be fair, a similar argument could be made about the “take that” nature of Evolution, I guess.

      @@davidt4233 oh no! I disagreed with you on FFO, too? I gotta say, every time I play a recommended game that I don’t like, I always really question how honest I should be. I mean, you are going out on a limb to share a game with me… about 2-3% of viewers leave comments and I LOVE hearing about what people are playing so I only want to encourage. Of honesty matters too! Anyway, keep the recommendations coming!

      Also, if I set my own impression aside, objectively, Downforce is a PERFECT game for this list. I would absolutely play this game with adults OR my kids!
