    I thought that The Prodigal Son wasn't going to be good because it wasn't filmed in Miami... Boy was I wrong! It's two part episode played out like a mini movie and was one of the best episodes of the entire series! Julian Beck's speech alone puts this episode on top!

    I loved it when they traveled out of Miami. Gave the show a unique feel, because many procedurals generally stay in the city they're set in. This show set the bar for future TV and pop culture in endless ways, but it sadly feels like a forgotten classic.

    • @vinced5741
      @vinced5741 Před 3 lety +7

      Cody Smith not only travelling outside of Miami was so special for the show but also that many of the scenes were filmed outside of the studio so the viewers could enjoy beautiful Miami as well. That's what made it so special to me. In later cop shows like CSI Miami etc. they do 90% of the filming inside the studio so you see nothing of beautiful Florida at all.

    • @Jorvaskrr
      @Jorvaskrr Před rokem +2

      Miami Vice definitely set the bar higher. Show runners wanted every episode to look and feel like a movie that you go to the cinema to watch. The Sopranos picked it up from there and then, Breaking Bad afterwards. I wonder what's next, but I feel like there's not gonna be something on the caliber of these series for a very long while.

    I remember I taped this back in September '85 and actually wore the tape out on rewind as I kept replaying from when Penn is killed in the elevator to Crockett running down the street in NY. Jan Hammer was such a genius with music mixes and finding tracks, creating original mixes.The song that is playing when the two hitmen are in the street and the GMC truck is honking while looking for Tubbs is so dope. All these years later this whole sequence still holds up. "Too much excitement." Yeah, Rico you guys gave us a lot of excitement, especially these first two seasons. Such a classic show!!!!! Update: Many thanks to a poster below who identified this song as 'Rubbermiro' by Liquid Liquid.

      I was in college at the time as a broadcasting/film student when this aired. That music mix that is playing as Crockett & Tubbs are running from the hitmen has stayed in my mind for over thirty years. Hammer was a genius. Heck, this show in its first seasons was so fresh. The action, the shootouts, cars, ladies, fashion, just 80s at its best. The Prodigal Son is pure genius. Starsky-Paul Michael Glaser did a helluva job directing.

      Seasons 1-3 were the stellar of the series. Season 4-5 got very strange. 1. The network moved the timeslot to 9pm to compete with Dallas. Replaced by an ill faded 60's based crime show "Crime Story". The ratings suffered a bit. Micheal Mann went on to work with Crime Story and left Miami Vice alone.

      Season 3 was the best in my opinion. It had some real stuff happen . Red Tape/Forgive Us Our Debts/ The Good Collar/ El Viejo/ Streetwise/Duty & Honor/ When Irish Eyes are Crying/Down For The Count part 1 and 2. Season 2 was good too . Prodigal Son/Sons & Lovers/Yankee Dollar/Buddies. Greatest cop show ever. I put New York Undercover and Chicago PD as great too. Had real endings and storylines. Miami Vice actually used real cases as the backdrop for the episodes

    I think the one commentor is wrong, this upload is not the full scene, there is a few seconds cut out. I specifically remember when Crocket is being chased the one part where the camera is going along side of him while he is running past the taxis (keeping up) was also done with the two hit men running after him, which was cut out.
