    I have to admit I felt very lost regarding the fly lady system until I found you Diane, and you broke it down and the light bulbs kept going off. You made it so clear and I'll always be grateful for that. I was on the verge of giving it up cos I felt so lost and overwhelmed by the process. You are the reason I didn't. Thanks!

    I binge watch your videos on weekly home blessing and whatever zone I am in all week long. Keeps me motivated. Love how you encourage us to start where we are and do what we can and be proud of any and all progress we make. Some days just getting up and dressed and feeding myself and my husband is a win. Routines and habits have kept me afloat often on days where I just don't have the bandwidth to think through and make decisions about what needs to be done. Thank you for always being a bright spot each day and something to look forward to when the daily tasks are not.

    Thank you, Diane! ❤❤❤Before I found you and Flylady, I worked shift work as a Nurse as well. The best part was having several days off in a row to recuperate. 🎉 I would often find myself at the grocery store after working my last 12 hour night, starting a LOL as soon as I got home, put groceries away before going to bed. I think I was trying to be a Flylady before I knew what it was. ❤❤❤

    The biggest takeaway from flylady for me was just the idea that I didn’t have to be perfect, but just put on a timer and do SOMETHING/ANYTHING for fifteen minutes. I found that I love the morning and evening routines and they make me feel grounded. Everything else is a bonus.

    You gave me a light bulb moment. Right now, after Daddy's month long stay in hospital, things have been so upside down. I felt the last thing I needed was to add back things into my day. Since it's things I need/must do anyway, it's actually not adding anything but rather addressing them before the last minute & I'm a hot mess! Thank you for the reminder. 🤗

    Hi, Diane, that’s good advice: shift with the shifts. I think we all have a weak point… or several ones… mine is 'tomorrow'. I’m good with weekly cooking plans, because I love cooking. Weekly errand day combined with a visit in a cosy café, no problem. Weekly home blessing: better and better. No guests needed😉. But declutter 15 minutes a day 🥵: I feel tired before I even started. Obviously my weak point. Going to bed at a decent hour (and getting up earlier☺) : another weak point, being a night owl 🦉. I guess I’ve to shift from 'tomorrow' to 'today'… thank you for sharing and thanks to Elisabeth. Love, Monika❣

    I am finally figuring this out! Some weeks the Power hour has to be split up among several days. Some weeks errand day is Monday, AP day is Thursday. The car was cleaned out on Tuesday last week! I have to plan around the work schedule I have for the week ahead. Taking a bit of time each Sunday to wrap my head around what that will look like really helps.

    Love your comment on the weather. I was quite distracted, looking out the window at what was going on! Here in Perth, it’s hot, hot, hot! My tip is to combine a few things together, I meal plan, do an online food shop, pay bills, make appointments, organise catch-ups at the same time. I do errands on whatever day I’ve booked appointments ( always the things I procrastinate about), and run the car through a car wash on the way home. Home blessing gets done in bits, bins on bin day, sheets on the weekend, dusting on Thursday when my darling coaches cricket etc, etc. my house is better than it’s ever looked in it’s life. I no longer die of embarrassment if someone opens a cupboard. Thanks Diane - look forward to your reminders and inspiration every week x

    Thank you Diane, I really like this new series!
    I was guilty of wanting to do the flylady system perfectly. I also work different shifts in a month. Since I've made changes with the daily focuses it's a lot more manageable. I still do meal planning and the cleaning hour, just not always on the same day each week. Errands are spread out during the week, either after a day shift for groceries or shopping or before an evening shift like going to the bank, dropping off something at a repair shop or the post office. I pay my bills twice a month on paydays and tend to papers when necessary. This is the area I would like to improve on. Plan more on a daily basis to keep all my projects moving along or else anti procrastinating day turns into a nightmare. Fun and rest days happen more throughout the week than on weekends and depends on my actual days off. This adapted version of the system makes it easier for me to not fall behind.

    This is so true. I'm retired now, but when I was working I did shifts on the care sector. So I had a routine set up for each of the shift scenarios depending whether I was starting work at 7am or 3pm and whether or not I was coming home at midday after an overnight shift. That really helped me.

    I love these tips you have been giving lately on how Flylady can adapt to various situations. I have never been able to make the Home Blessing hour work for me and have never gotten a satisfactory solution. I don't know if it's because I am elderly or because I am just plain slow. And I do understand that I am not expected to do a perfect Vaccuuming job or a perfect Dusting job, but nevertheless, no matter what I tried, I could not get all those jobs done in 10 minutes each or in a total of 1 hour. And, I was not off by just a few minutes either! I mean, I cannot in any way shape or form change the linens on even ONE bed in 10 minutes, start to finish! AND, the issue is, if I don't do these basic things every week, the house can get quite "off", if you know what I mean. And once I succumb to let it take longer, I find that the "trademark" of Flylady of not spending so much time cleaning "flies" right out the window. I would love to hear you and anyone else's ideas about this.

    • @Catsfancy
      @Catsfancy Před 2 lety +3

      I right there with you! My weekly home blessing hour actually turns into 3 hours or more, and I don't even have that big of a house! There other thing that isn't working so well are the forgotten rooms, my husband's office, our sunroom/craft room, and the laundry room. I know we are supposed to work them in but it never seems to happen for me until I just can't stand it anymore and spend 1/2 day on a room deep cleaning. Maybe I'm just too much of a perfectionist!

    • @lancslass8
      @lancslass8 Před 2 lety +4

      I feel the same at times. I have tried setting a timer for ten minutes or so, and it was so stressful. I felt like a hamster running on a wheel. I seemed to spend more time setting the timer for another ten minutes than keeping to it. I now do not bother with timers, lists or plans. If it needs doing, I do it. I do not need to look at a list or a plan. For example, I look at the kitchen floor and if it needs cleaning then I will clean it. I cannot be bothered with composing a list, and looking at the list to see what needs doing, and then trotting back to my list to tick off once it's done. I had a go at meal planning, but often times didn't feel like I wanted to eat what I had planned for that particular day, though I can see the benefits to plan for what to buy. There again if you do not want to eat what you had planned on, then even that is a waste of time/money. For me there is nothing worse than having a list be it great or small, and then at the end of the day you haven't completed everything on that list. When that happened I felt thoroughly cheesed off, fed up and miserable, and thinking why did I set myself up to fail. Having said that, and not wishing to come across as the female version of Victor Meldrew, I agree wholeheartedly with Diane about establishing a system that works for you, and find the vidoes both inspiring and uplifting. I wish I had a working Wonder Woman cape that I could don, and speed through this housework malarkey. May the force be with us all!

      I agree. I am in my 70's and have tried many systems but can't stay with it long. My house has too much but in spite of decluttering I never get ahead. I tried to follow along with flylady on Monday but by the time I get my vacuum set up half the time is gone. I am slower than I used to be so that timer doesn't work for me.

    • @mjcossel6136
      @mjcossel6136 Před rokem +1

      Maybe try this: Do the 10-minute task, but time yourself for how long it takes you to get it done. Then you have your base time to improve. Let’s say it takes 30 minutes to change sheets instead of 10. What could you do to shave that down to 25? Is your linen closet jam packed so you can’t access the sheets? Are the sheet sizes all jumbled up so you’re wasting time figuring out what sheet goes to which bed? Are you a slower walker and so most of the time goes to traveling back and forth to the linen closet? Then you can come up with solutions. If the walking is the problem, maybe you could store each bed’s sheets in that bedroom’s closet. That would also fix the size issue. Try to break down the task to see where you can shave off a few minutes. I hope this idea is helpful! Best wishes to you!

      Good for you! Keep going! I had to watch the 31 baby steps playlist several times. The first time, I started a few good habits like the shiny sink, started a morning routine and did Swish and swipe. Once I felt like those things were actually habits and I felt a day was incomplete without them, I would go through the playlist again, watching the daily videos while I unloaded the dishwasher each morning, I would pick up and add one or two new things and stick with those til they felt natural. Often, I would go backwards, but learned from Diane that on my down days, I could just set an alarm for the top of the hour, every hour, and get up and just do something for ten minutes. Sometimes, that would encourage me to do more, but, even if I just did ten minutes an hour, by the end of the day I had done an hour or more of tasks. We are trying to form good habits and that takes time and we can only add one or two at a time, very gradually.

    Hello Diane. I haven't commented in a while but I thought I would share my recent experiences which fits in with your topic. I went back to flylady again for the third time. I stopped in the past due to having too many things to attend to and related to work, etc. So, I have been with flylady now for about a couple of months. I would tend to take all day to finish my routines due to spreading them out in between decluttering and zone work. I found myself being so exhausted and not completing my daily routines. My other downfall was taking too long to drink my two coffee cups in AM while reading emails; my seller Ebay account, etc., all while watching the TV throughout the day. Well, of course I would get sucked into the TV, etc. I have completed a lot of decluttering, etc. but I just wiped myself out. So, I decided to not have zone work but have declutter work ( I have rooms to do). My rule now is to drink my coffee; read emails for one hour and then continue non-stop with routines and no TV. This has made a world of difference to me. MY kitchen is now the cleanest and most organized; almost clutterfree since the past 4 yrs. of so. And I am not exhausted. I have made great strides in my bedroom and bathroom too. I know you recommended to not do zone work if you have a lot of decluttering, but I was stubborn. So, for me it's all about focusing on the routines-like you said! RA-RA-RA! P.S. I commented on your post today re dressingyourtruth. I can't be a T1. It's just not me. (nothing against the T1's).

Life became peaceful once I understood that seeing my things brought comfort and relieved stress. Diane's GTD is also a must in my life. Knowing I won't forget to do something makes me a very happy woman. GTD...getting things done, Easiest way is Diane's way. Highly recommended

    Hi Diane. I love your channel. I too, am ok with my morning/evening routine but I struggle with the zone cleaning after i have been to work . As it is the bedroom this week I am trying to declutter a little every night . I know you have to think marathon not sprint but sometimes I want instant success and feel down with myself when it isnt happening fast enough - I am sure k am not the only person who feels like this.

      Set the timer for fifteen minutes. You won’t get all you want to done, but you can stop guilt-free, knowing that you WILL do another 15 minutes tomorrow. If you just do that Monday to Friday, you will have spent over an hour working in your bedroom and that’s a lot. Seriously, just that small amount of time makes a huge difference by the end of the year. After a year, you will have worked 16 hours in that bedroom. I didn’t work all that hard at it, but after a year of consistency, I found that when I went into a new zone, there often wasn’t much to do anymore. Just stick to fifteen minutes. Keep yours eyes on the big picture. I promise that next year your house will be so much easier.

My husband is very untidy and doesn't feel the stress that I feel with clutter and the list of jobs left. I e tried everything to get him to help but he doesn't get it and just wants me to take it easy. Deep down I think that he wants me to take it easy so he doesn't have to anything either. I can't keep going!

    Yes that's what was hard for me bc she would say ok trash day was this particular day & mine was Monday so Sunday night I had to make sure my trash was down by the curb. Then Wednesday is my busiest day with special needs children in therapies and Boy Scouts in the evening. Tues is my husband's only day off so that when we try to do stuff as a family Altogether with him and Saturday is more of a visit Mamaw day for the kids and then Mommy & Daddy get to go to Applebee's in the evening for a little date night. (Not every wkend do the kids go to Mamaw's, but when they do we like to go out to eat there)
    When trying to do it the way she had it didn't work for our family, but just rearranging the days to fit us worked better.
    We are getting ready to move so our house is a bit chaotic right now. So i can't wait to get into the new house and start implementing the Fly Lady System better than I have been.
    As I'm packing I am decluttering Heavily the things we don't need/ want/ use. That way I don't need to pack unwanted clutter to the new house.

    Good advice, but if she has teenagers, involving them in meal planning and preparing a night (or couple) a week would take some of the stress of dealing with meals every night. They have a dog? Include the young ones in its care and feedings. Including the children helps reduce the workload and teaches them skills and responsibility.

    • @jenniferferrence
      @jenniferferrence Před 2 lety +1

      If you look back at her other videos, you will find lots of help with this! Look for things labeled “Flylady refresher” The Flylady system can seem overwhelming if you look at the official website. The way I see it, you just do a little, whenever you can. Figure out what is absolutely necessary to keep the house running, and start with that. Put it into a routine, so it becomes automatic. Break up the home blessing hour throughout the week, one thing at a time (this is not cleaning the entire house, as I used to think! Just the main traffic areas). The zone cleaning is a lot, I agree, if you feel you have to do it all every week. Look back at some of her videos on zone cleaning, because she explains that you don’t have to do everything, you just pick something. Maybe you have time to do a quick wipe off of the fingerprints on the walls this month in this zone, but that’s it. It’s still something! It’s still better than it was, and you have made some progress. Sometimes, I have to remind myself that most of the tasks on the detailed cleaning list are things you might only need to do every couple of months. It’s not all meant to be done every time you are in that zone. No matter what you do, if you are putting in a little time a day doing something, your house will feel better. Just don’t let yourself get bogged down in the detail cleaning before you have the main things running well (like laundry, dishes, basic vacuuming, etc). I think, instead of wondering how many minutes it should take, you might want to consider how many minutes you have. If you have 30 minutes a day, you can get a lot done over the week, even if the 30 minutes are in 10 min slots. Make it work for you, not the other way around. The house can be so overwhelming! Especially when you are working full time! Hang in there!

    • @missmayflower
      @missmayflower Před 2 lety +1

      You have to decide what your own baseline is. For me, the morning and evening routines and throwing in a load of laundry are the most important. Then I consider anything else a bonus. In the morning, I always make my bed, swish & swipe before going in the shower and get dressed. First thing when I go downstairs is to empty the dishwasher while the water boils for my tea. That way, I have a place to put the dirty dishes so the kitchen always looks fine. Then down to the basement to throw in a load of laundry. The evening routine sets the stage for a clean start in the morning. Love that shiny sink and the clean counters and always start the dishwasher before bed. Everyone in the house needs to be trained to PUPA (pick up and put away) before they leave a room. These things make me feel happy and accomplished. If I have time I can then look at doing one of the other things, but, if not that’s okay too. I’ll usually manage to set the timer for 15 minutes and do what looks urgent, like vacuuming traffic areas or maybe tackling the pile of shoes at the door, or maybe the dust has been bugging me. One thing and forget the rest unless you happen to have the time or energy.
