- Here's my review of the 2021 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Night Watchman, by Louise Erdrich. She is one of America's greatest writers and, in my opinion, was long overdue for this prize. If you've read this book, what did you think? Do you have a favorite Louise Erdrich novel? Please tell me in the Comments section!
Other Erdrich books I have read:

Great review, Kelly! I am looking forward to getting to this one, hopefully later this year. Erdrich's writing is lovely as always.
I look forward to hearing what you think of it!
Beautiful, beautiful Blue.
Oh, and excellent review, as well.
Pets always steal the show! But yes, Blue is such a sweetheart. We were gone this weekend and he was so happy to have us home again. I truly wish he was in all my videos. Great to hear from you Gail!
Kelly, fascinating review. You’re introducing me to a world I know very little about. The more you chat about Erdrich, the more I want to read something by her. Maybe even The Night Watchman.
You definitely should give her a try. She's tremendous.
Excellent review!
Thank you Francine!
Sounds fantastic! Thanks for your thoughts. Did skip the spoilers though.
Jan! I'm glad you liked the video. I hope you'll read the book and tell me what you think of it!
I enjoyed this review! 😊 I think Erdrich is an author I never would have heard of were it not for booktube! Is there an Erdrich book you'd recommend for starting with?
I tend to gravitate toward Love Medicine, but there is a video by a Native American booktuber who made a video about where to start with the Love Medicine series. I haven't watched the video yet so I don't know what she says, but Love Medicine knocked my socks off. Great to hear from you Aaron!
Excellent review Kelly. I've had Erdrich's The Master Butcher's Singing Club unread on my shelf for far too long. She's a writer I really need to get to.
Can I ask what you thought of 2019's Pulitzer, The Overstory? I recently read it and wasn't terribly impressed.
Also, I wanted to let you know that I'm currently reading Andersonville and absolutely loving it. Certainly the best novel I've read this year.
OMG! You're reading and loving Andersonville??? I'm so glad to hear that. The Overstory ... I don't know why I didn't do a Booktube review of it, but I thought it was good. I guess maybe I saw it as a nod to the times we are living in and what's happening to the earth. I don't have the list in front of me, but I can't think of a lot of Pulitzers that have to do with the earth. I thought the trees were the best characters though. Finally, yes, you need to get to Erdrich! I haven't read The Master Butcher's Singing Club. I own it though. Probably won't get to it this year, but if you want to read it with other people, let me know! I'm so happy that FINALLY someone else is appreciating Andersonville. Best part of the day.
I’ve read three Erdrich novels and enjoyed every one so I’m sure why I haven’t read her for a while 🤔. Thank you for the review Kelly and the warning on spoilers!
Some people don’t care about spoilers, but I am here to look out for the rest of us! 😃 Which Erdrich novels have you read?
It’s actually only two when I looked properly, The Round House and The Master Butchers Singing Club which I especially loved!
@@josmith5992 oh! I own both of those, but haven’t read either of them. I’d like to read all her adult novels someday.
It’s been on my list to read ever since it came out. Maybe I can do the audio read by the author later this year.
Very cool! Someone else left a comment that it's really wonderful on audio. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Which of the four would you recommend as a first Erdrich?
Hi Aaron! There is a video by a Native American booktuber - I still haven't watched it dang it! - but she talks about where to start in the Love Medicine series by Erdrich. I tend to think of all her books as linked, but Love Medicine is an incredible work of fiction on its own.
I have seen this book around, but wasn't sure what it is about. This book sounds like a must read. It sounds like such an important book.
Hi Mindy! This is an important piece of fiction, I think anyway. Thanks for watching and commenting! Are you surviving CFD?
I recently listened to the audiobook of The Night Watchman, which is wonderfully narrated by the author. This was a solid five-star read for me. I loved the depth and soul of this book. I have had an uneven experience reading Pulitzer fiction prize winners: Some I absolutely agree with (1972’s recipient, Wallace Stegner for Angle of Repose being my favorite) and others not so much (2011’s recipient, Jennifer Egan for A Visit from the Goon Squad being my least favorite). This year I heartily agree with the Pulitzer committee’s pick. Thanks for your thoughtful video on this book.
HELLO! I'm so glad you left a comment. I LOVE Angle of Repose (one of two Pulitzers I've read twice) and A Visit from the Goon Squad irritated me with its Power Point chapter. She's writing a sequel to it!!! Can you believe that? I'm not surprised listening to Erdrich read this book was incredible. How many Pulitzers have you read? Please stick around. :)
@@booksimnotreading Looks like it’s been awarded 89 times-I’ve read 39 and DNF’d 3. I misspoke about my favorite, I forgot Grapes of Wrath had won. There’s some awesome books on the list. I love the Richards Ford and Russo. There are two books you couldn’t pay me to read: The Fable and The Reivers, both by Faulkner. I’ve already done my time as far as his oeuvre goes. What are your favorites?
Edited to add: Oops, disregard the last question. I am new to your channel and see that you have a video about your favorites which I have now watched and enjoyed.
@@athertonca Thr Grapes of Wrath is also amazing! You have excellent taste. Would you mind sharing your first name with me? If not, I understand. What prompted you to read Pulitzers?
Spoilers! Yikes. I forgot all about that. Great job. _The Heartbeat Of Wounded Knee_ does a great job with the history of the termination policy and its effects.
Thank you, Brian, for the book recommendation. As with The Nickel Boys, I was appalled that I didn't know anything about this slice of American history, although sadly I wasn't surprised that this actually happened.
Love this review. Though it is horrific once you realize that the proposed termination of Native American tribes back then in the book actually almost happened in real life…why hasn’t anyone heard of this? They should. I think I would like a miniseries adaptation with open casting and age and ethnicity appropriate actors (with a 19 year old newcomer to play Patrice).
Hello Flannery! Thank you so much for commenting! I felt the same way when I read the book - why don’t we know about this terrible bill that happened so recently in history? I’d love a film or a mini-series adaptation.
