  • Icelandair has a long history of using narrowbodies on long routes; its the core operating model for the airline! As we previously covered on this channel, the carrier’s Airbus A321XLRs will replace its aging Boeing 757s. Speaking at Routes Europe in Istanbul, the carrier's Head of Revenue Management and Pricing, Matthías Sveinbjörnsson, who is also an Icelandair 757/767 pilot, said that the XLR "can do more" than the 757.       Yeah, and still performs like he's 25 too. The 757 is the most overpowered airliner, much more powerful than some A321.

    Maybe Easyjet could start buying these and running some transatlantic routes.
    Thats if they are prepared to stand in the queue and wait for the delivery.

    Maybe to SNA? I've seen A321neos able to takeoff and land with the 5k feet runway Hopefully the XLR can come through

    Sometimes people say the strangest things. Saying the A321XLR "Can do more" than the 757 is like saying the iPhone 15 can do more than the iPhone 5. I certainly would hope so. 🙄

      From my understanding the 321XLR still doesn’t have the hot high and heavy capabilities of the 57.

      @@KingKong-xp6so from my understanding the 57 can still take off fully loaded from shorter runways or higher elevation runways where’s the XLR needs to be down rated to takeoff.

      The reason they say it is because the b757 and original A321 were not comparable. Two different airplanes for different missions. However, the A321 has evolved to the point it can do what the 757 can do plus even some more.

    Forget about Mexico City, there's no way any A321 (let alone the XLR) can takeoff from that airport elevation with enough fuel to reach Keflavik

      757 doesn't have the fuel to reach MEX from KEF nonstop in the first place. At least A321XLR should be able to do that.

    They should have gone with the A320NEO over the MAX 8 and 9 to further simplify things. I want to know how they will eventually replace their 767-300ER's, whether it is the 787 or A330NEO they go with.

      No reason to pick the A320NEO over the MAX. I think MAX performs better.

      I think the MAX 10 can replace the B763s given the missions that they currently fly. The A21NY (A321XLR) can do KEF to SFO.

    Mexico City with its ‘hot and very high’ location would be doubtful with the XLR.

      Mexico City has three airports, two of them with runways longer than 14,000 feet. The other has runways longer than 12,000 feet. I think the XLR will handle it fine.

      A321LR at 97t requires around 1500ft longer runway than 757-200 at 110t. Some more restrictions but probably not dealbreakers.

    There’s 2 historic narrowbodies that actually could do even better albeit their quads and with higher fuel capacity; the DC-8 Super 70’s (the -73 was the largest aircraft until the 747 started the widebody era and remains the longest narrowbody ever built) and the 707-320B Intercontinental

      I love the guy. I will try to fly it when back to Iceland- didn't like the MAX on the route. Flew 767 and it was by far the best experience. It roars on take-off, push you against the seat and so roomy during cruise. One of my best flight experiences ever
