      Man thats dedication 👏. Sadly I can't even reuse my old bulbs. The whole logistic to get them to bloom when I have limited space is to much hassle, especially when I can order them so easily from the Netherlands each year. But honestly it always feels like a defeat to throw the bulb out.

    I fell in love with these when I packed bulbs for a major bulb producer decades ago. I sent them to my mom & sisters for years. My daughter was little at the time & though she's grown now, she STILL calls them "grandma-ryllis" 😆
    I'm in N. Georgia & let mine be outside in their pots through the summer. This year, I let one stalk go to seed & now have tiny babies growing! They're just one little leaf, will probably take forever to reach bloom size but, what the heck, why not??
    Brought mine in before it got too cold, I don't care when they bloom either, always welcome blooms whenever they appear!

    Mine are planted in the garden and they bloom in the spring. But I did have one bloom this in July. Very unusual here in zone 7. I do plant them up to the almost top of the bulb. I have had these bulbs for over thirty years. If I move they come with me. I have moved over the years at least eight times. My dad gave me the start of them he lived at the time in Florida. My bulbs have been in Florida, Texas, Georgia, North Carolina. Have done well in all of these locations.

    I find it helpful to know that even “seasoned gardeners” get off schedule and that things can still be done, even when you run late. I like that you give us what to expect, if we are later in doing things, because the plants may behave differently, if they are in a different stage of their life (kinda like people, when they are in different stages of life!)! Thanks so much!

  • @leoprimorac4136
    @leoprimorac4136 Před 3 lety +27

    Laura, you have mentioned that your bulbs bloomed in the summer. When they are planted outside they usually bloom in May-June. That is their bloom time in nature. If you want to grow them outside it is posible in colder climates. Next year you can plant your plants from pots in ground after the last hard frost, and treat them like every other plant. In autumn you need to wait frost to kill amaryllis leaves, and then you dig them up, cut the roots and store them somewhere where the temperature is 10C (50F). And then you just wait spring to plant bulbs in ground normal. Just plant them like every other bulb (the top of the bulb 4-5 inches deeper than ground level). And then same process in autumn with digging them up. Bulbs can tolerate temp down to -6C (20F), some varieties can tolerate temps down to -12C (10F). So you can plant them earlier in the spring when it is safe. They grow better when they are planted outside than in pots.

    This is my first year planting amaryllis and it's because of watching your video last year. I tried ordering from Color Blends but 2 weeks ago they were sold out! lol I'll try earlier next year. So I ordered from Gardner's Supply and on a whim picked up some paper whites and a pretty red (can't remember the name) from a big box store. I planted them all up in my terra cotta that was languishing in an old shed and now they are taking up my valuable counter top work space in my kitchen. Well worth it! Seriously Laura, because of watching your videos I've had house plants for a year now and they are all still alive! Lemon Cypress, pathos, Christmas cactus (love the leaves even without the blooms), aloe vera, an assortment of succulents, and even an ORCHID! Which is going super strong though I admit I have no idea what I'm doing right to make it grow so profusely and bloom so happily! I'm looking forward to expanding in to my yard this spring and trying my hand at bigger plants. lol Thanks for sharing your journey and giving so much encouragement through your videos, you're awesome.

    Surprisingly I found the exact amaryllis your planting a few days ago, and obviously picked up a couple. Turns out they must not look at their stock very often because I got 2 that had stalks at least 7 or 8 in tall! And they were all bent over in the box, one being almost 90degrees!
    I was so concerned I had to buy them and take them home. It's been 3 days and thankfully theh have pretty much fully straightened up.
    1 of them actually has 2 bloom stalks and the other possibly was producing a second bulb (pointed downward, but already had a leaf, I generally separated and planted it next to mother considering I didnt think it would do well being planted under the soil) you can already see the reds of the bloom coming in.
    I talk to them, rub their leaves, and encourage them a couple times a day. I feel like it helps putting out the positive energy for them to grow strong and amazing.

    Laura, thanks for sharing the information about how to get an amaryllis bulb to bloom a second year. Years ago, I had an amaryllis bloom at Christmas, and it was gorgeous for several weeks, then I put it in our cool basement to rest until I could plant it outside in the spring (not the proper way to care for one). Later the next fall, I took some canna tubers to the basement to store for the winter and found my poor amaryllis. It had apparently bloomed and died back without water or light! The dried-up papery bloom stock was the only evidence that it has bloomed again with absolutely no care from me. Oops! ~Margie
