If you’re referring to the Carlton draught “big ad” this ad absolutely used cgi! They took 300 extras and made them look like 3000. Animal Logic was the production company that did it, they also did the Matrix.

@@bronwynstevens6658 No but I do use trustworthy sources and have read a number of articles and seen marketing presentations on how it was done.
The Big Beer ad - “This year Australia's very own big ad took 300 people and a budget - according to industry sources - of little more than $1 million.”
“For the animation, Mr Middleditch called in digital production company Animal Logic, which worked on The Matrix and Moulin Rouge. They created 3-D computer-generated human extras for the nine aerial crowd shots and then, using crowd simulation software called Massive, they replicated them thousands of times over. Each character was assigned its own random movement and direction, according to Animal Logic creative director Bruce Carter. This is the first time Massive has been used in Australia for a TV advertisement”
      The Age, Aug 15, 2005.

My favourite Tooheys ad is a man and a small dog (like a fox terrier) is walking past a pub. You can see he gets an idea, and he puts dark sunnies and walks in. The barkeep syas "Oi, no dogs allowed!" and he responds "It's my seeing-eye dog". The barkeep asks "Aren't guide dogs normally Labradors?" the man responds...."So what'd they give me?"
Incidentally the music in the first ad is basically the underlying theme of all VB add.
All of these beers are well known, and readily available - beers you might drink for quantity over quality....none of them are terrible, but they wouldn't be your first "goto " either.

The “flash beer” ad is based on the famous scene from the movie “flash dance”. What is really funny is not just swapping a beautiful girl for an overweight guy in her clothes but he does all the dance moves (badly) that she does in the movie. Even the ending is the same.

Just watching from UK here and the last advert reminded me of one we had here for British Airways! Referred to as the BA "Face" advertisement, it was a television commercial campaign by BA in 1989. It was made by advertising firm Saatchi & Saatchi and is often considered to be a television 'commercial classic'. Thousands of people (dressed in various coloured clothing) gather together and form a GIANT "Face" - all filmed from the air. They did three versions and it was all filmed on the Salt Flats, Utah. A poll conducted by Channel 4 and The Sunday Times, ranked it 62 on "The 100 Greatest TV Ads" TV programme. But then it did much higher on ITV1's "ITV's Best Ads Ever" programme (aired in 2005), ranking at number 15. I wonder if the 'Carlton' ad was also made by S&S? (still trying to find out).
EDIT: "Big Ad" was made by George Patterson and Partners (Melbourne) and the advert has since received over 30 awards globally, including a prestigious 'Gold Lion' award at the 53rd Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival in 2006.

Hi Ryan, Tooheys is pronounced "Two-ees". Yes lots of Aussie beers. Each state has its own major brewer: Carlton and United Brewery (CUB - makes Victoria Bitter, Carlton Draught and many others), Victoria, Tooheys, NSW, XXXX (pronounced "4x"), QLD, Coopers, SA, Swan, WA, Cascade, southern TAS and Boags, Northern TAS + many others, including lots of craft brewers and micro breweries. The music that the orchestra was playing was the CUB theme, which was used in many ads over decades, usually with a narrator describing how you get the thirst - "You can get it ridin', you can get it slidin', you can feel it comin' on about 4. A hard earned thirst needs a big cold beer, and the best cod beer is Vic - Vc Bitter". When you said: "Mmmmmm, Vic", I reminded me of Homer Simpson. No idea why number 2 on the list of the top 10 beer ads is an ad for rum.

    • @berranari1
      @berranari1 Před rokem +2

Did you know that XXXX originally started in Castlemaine in Victoria? And Mathew Toohey started his first brewery in Melbourne after coming to Australia from Ireland.
Fun fact: Victoria Bitter is named after the street the brewery was on "Victoria Parade" not after the state of Victoria.
The beer list was not the best. The old VB ad and the old Tooheys ad needed a spot. XXXX too.
We both missed James Squire. You covered it by writing "many others". But is that even really a brand. I mean they just use his name yeah? James Squire must be owned by one of the other brands.

Ryan.... starting with that Budweiser stuff - describing it as like making love in a punt (I'll leave you to wonder what that elusiion means).... but seriously the tune being played in both Victoria Bitter ads is the jingle for the brand, which they've now used for over sixty years. Usually with the narration "You can get it [working], you can get it [running], as a matter of fact I've got it now. For a hard earned thirst, deserves the big cold beer, and the best cold beer is Vic, Victoria Bitter" from the late John Mellion - who's best remembered globally for his supporting role in the first two Crocodile Dundee films. And the tune is a subtle reworking of the theme from The Magnificent Seven.

So context for these ads is that advertising alcohol in Australia is very restricted.
The code of conduct states that:
the content cannot target minors or young people under 25 years of age
the content cannot encourage heavy or excessive drinking
the content cannot promote alcohol as a mood enhancer, therapeutic solution, or contributor to success
the content cannot show alcohol being consumed during an activity that requires safety precautions (such as driving or operating heavy machinery).
Point 3 in particular makes it hard to use a lot of traditional marketing of alcohol. You can't suggest that people will have a better time or be more social because of alcohol.
So these companies have huge advertising budgets, and need to get creative.

9:30 a few of them are named after where they came from - Carlton and Bundaberg are towns, Victoria is a state, etc. Bundaberg is a giant sugar cane area, so naturally some of that sugar gets brewed into rum, lol.
11:45 that last Carlton ad is much older than 12 years as well - and it was just a regular TV ad. Whilst obviously sporting ad spots are big, but we don't really have the money in it like you guys, so no Superbowl like segment in the year

We have a lot of small local 'boutique' breweries also that produce really nice quality beer. The imported beers are fairly expensive, of course, but Heineken (Dutch), Ashahi (Japan) and Peroni (Italian) are pretty popular - and of course, when in Bali... it's Bintang all the way! Budweiser wasn't so popular in the past until they started brewing it here in Australia - maybe they changed the flavour a bit for the local market. You'd pay about $19.00 AUD for a six-pack.

As an old fart, I remember well how popular VB and fosters were to australian drinkers up until the end of the eighties. Then Carlton brought in a ‘Premium’ version that took off massively. During the 90’s Carlton Premium, Corona, and dozens of Aussie craft beers took off, along with James Squire and people discovering imported Belgium and other European beers along with Japanese Sapporo Beer. (Guinness had always a minor but strong presence). Melbourne Bitter, Vic Bitter and Fosters just died. The three of them were overloaded with hops, because that’s what Australians got used to drinking back when Britain to australian ship voyages took 8 months. Only high hops beers were sterile enough to survive an 8 month voyage that crossed the equator. But it made the beer taste like piss.
The VB orchestra were playing an instrumental version of VB’s usual theme song in their ads. The adventurous tounge ad was made after a song called ‘Detachable Penis’ went huge on Triple J. The big ad at the end was sung to the tune of ‘Carmena Burana’ by Carl Orff, written in 1936 with lyrics in Latin from 13th C poems.

Walking past the Carlton Brewery in Melbourne it smelled like hot Weetbix. An open cartload of hot malt mash pulled by two Clydesdale horses, Bonnie and Clyde, would come out dripping and steaming into the road. So cool.

Ryan say Tooheys like 2-ee's, The beer bottle blowing is real it was the Sydney Orchestra doing it for a laugh, I remember reading about it. I love the ad where the boys give the excuse to go to the garage , that one gets me every time, I think it's brilliant and a bunch of neighbours who got on very well could do some clever things, not to decieve the wife of course, but they could make life very good if they could trust each other. Their trying cloud seeding they do that to get rain, hurliging hot girls into the clouds is a good idea but wont work unfortunately, damn it. haha

Yup - the Carlton Draught "IT'S A BIG AD!" ad premiered during the AFL grand final, 2005 or 2006(?). Very much like the Superbowl - big bucks involved.
I was in a pub in Perth and by the 2nd half after the ad had played for the 5th or 6th time, the whole pub was shouting "IT'S A BIG AD!". Was so grand. Especially after 5 or 6 pints watching the Eagles vs Swannies.

As they were firing all the ingredients with the trebuchet, I cottoned on to the idea and followed along with the ingredients. The only thing I could think of that hadn't come up was yeast, then all of a sudden they catapult 2 women?
