Having spent a few days with the iPhone 15 Pro in Sydney I've been really enjoying the key new features like USB-C, the 5X telephoto tetraprism lens, the new action button, and of course the revised design and titanium frame. But some decisions Apple continues to make are blatantly anti-consumer and directly in opposition to the claims of environmental protection that they publicly profess. Today we'll go over my in depth testing iPhone 15 Pro review and discuss the MASSIVE flaw with iPhones these days.

Actually, I bought 2 - the 15 (upgrading from 12 mini) and 15 Pro (upgrading from 13 Pro). TBH, upgrading from the 14 Pro is not worth it; unless you want 5x or USB-C. About the battery life - it seemed that it was really going through the battery fast, but after having 5 days now; I find that the battery is conditioned and now the battery life has improved immensely (TBH, it's actually really great).

Claims like 'recycled materials', 'non toxic components', etc are meaningless if you have to recycle the device long before it reaches what should be its natural lifespan. Parts cannot be replaced without Apple lifting your leg, and in addition you become locked out of your iCloud account until you buy a newer product.
That tactic should be completely illegal, on environmental grounds at the very least.
In addition, you cannot give an older iPhone or iPad a second life by installing Linux onto it. I have a fully reliable iPhone 6 Plus here which still has 87% battery health, and looks brand new, but it can only be used for phone calls, texting and non-iCloud e- mails. Apple locked it out of iCloud a few months ago, for no sensible reason apart from greed, effectively losing them a customer, because I don't have the spare money to shell out for a new phone. I'd put a modern version of Linux into it in a heartbeat.... if Apple would allow that heart to beat.
The only reasons why I use an Apple phone are that Android is truly awful to use, laden with ads on every level, and a portal for Google to shove its hand down the user's throat, or into any other orifice that you can imagine.

Luke you hit the nail on the head with Apple’s decision to lock out 3rd party repairs with serialised components which leads to increased e-waste. Please use your voice and popularity to keep highlighting this and hopefully with enough backlash Apple can change their ways.

Also thank you for talking about the repair side. I own a electronics repair shop and these phones / laptops / tablets are always getting harder and harder to fix. I hate to tell my customers no there's nothing I can do when I know darn well if it wasn't for everything being serialized I could fix it. Apple has made me purchase other products they sell just to break them open to get 1 stupid charging/power IC because no one will sell it. Other repair shops will know what I'm talking about... We need to get Right to Repair moving forward but when all these companies have trillions / billions to spend on lobbyist I'm not sure what we will be able to accomplish without a wake up call.

It’s quite simple, they’re a private business and can sell their products in such a way that they deem appropriate. No one has to buy it. If that happened maybe it would change but the desire is still bigger than the downsides. Doesn’t take legislature to force them to produce products a certain way, trust me no one wants that

I own my own business and Ive been in the repair field for about 20+ years now.... I know what I'm talking about. There are bad repair shops out there yes but there are many many many good ones that are not " Authorized repair " X brand " that you can trust. I do not know of many devices that have been repaired from a shop and then blown up / catch fire. That would be a potential bad battery that maybe a good tech thought was good at the time? It is tricky finding the right vendors that will go against the big tech companies and sell you the right / good parts I admit. I really hope your not one of those people who watches and believes all the " ANTI-REPAIR COMMERCIALS " about an un-authorized tech will hack your device and ruin your life by stalking you. Many " Authorized " repair companies or even the big brand have been caught cutting corners and stealing customers data. If they do not have their data backed up on iCloud , the only way to retrieve their data is to fix the device. Quality third party repair is the only option. You are also right about the anti third party propaganda put out by the big tech companies. The auto companies put out these ridiculous adverts about people getting raped in car parks because of third party repair. This was highlighted by Louis Rossmann in some of his videos. We need effective right to repair strategies from the tech companies and in all areas from farming equipment to computer hardware and everything in between. Not these toothless attempts by CrApple to hoodwink the legislature into thinking that their recent repair and parts availability programs are actually of any practical use.

Also people please understand about serialising the components. Do you really want to be placing a cheap knock off display on your 15 Pro Max? an inferior back glass with plastic lenses so your pictures now look like dog shit? a port that works half the time because it’s badly made? All of these things ruin your experience of the device and it’s all your fault.

    • @JacquesCoetzerAU
      @JacquesCoetzerAU Před 10 měsíci +4

They should just allow yourself as the owner to be able to control the de-serialization of components via an AppleID login or some other form of authentication, especially one that a thief would not have access to (like a Yubikey). That way, people can repair their own phones or give repair shops temporary permission to swap out components. Having Apple be the sole controller of the serialization process is stupid.

Is it true that numbering all the components of the iPhone makes its repair more expensive, but in my experience, living in Argentina where it’s very likely that you’ll be robbed, the advantage of them being numbered is that iPhones aren’t stolen because people know that if you lock them via iCloud, they become paperweights. They can’t even sell the parts. Perhaps if Apple numbered them but made repair easier and more accessible, numbering would be an advantage. Because yes, here in Mendoza, which is a province in the interior of Argentina, it’s impossible to find official Apple service centers to fix them.

With Fairphone now promising 8 years of updates and Apple making repairs more and more difficult I’m starting to consider switching back to Android. One of the reasons I switched to iPhone was the long support but that’s not helping if it’s too expensive to repair the phones. They claim to support right to repair officially. I hope they actually do it in practice for next year’s phones.

They made the same promises when they were selling the Fairphone One and Two. And they kept their word. Until they didn't. Try finding a modern motherboard for the Fairphone One, try replacing your Fairphone Two screen for an oled one. They just pour a bucket of marketing sauce over the issue, telling you it's no longer viable to keep offering parts for that old a phone. That parts availability was the sales pitch when they sold it, now the opposite is? They are the same as all the others, they're the phone equivalent of the CO2 emissions protester that flies around the world to be there at every highway blockade.

I'm clumsy and I would not like to pay expensive fees on top of expensive phone, just to be on the safe side when it comes fixing broken display. I mean, sure all the phones can be pricy to get display changed, but some other manufacturers still make it possible to use other than authorized service only.

My iPad Pro 12.9 is four years old and I still pay every month for AppleCare. Last year the USB port no longer would charge so they sent me a replacement unit, same model. My question is at what point do they tell me we’re sorry you’ve been paying for AppleCare but we no longer have that unit to replace yours with.

I’m going to preface this with I think one should be able to repair and destroy one’s own purchase however they see fit. But let’s put some perspective to this, not to say that it is right or wrong, but just that it is. If I make something, sell it to you, you modify it with parts that “work” but don’t provide the experience of my original design, is it my product or your device? It still has my logo. Later, you sell this product to someone and don’t disclose your personal modifications. who does this person blame for the bad experience? They just think I make a bad product and probably steer clear of my products. Boo hoo, pity for me. Right? That’s one perspective. Let’s look at theft. If I steal your phone, without a passcode or cloud recovery, the device is useless, as a device. I can still sell the parts, as genuine apple, because they are. But if they are serialized to the original device, they are crippled and useless in grey market theft. It’s a double edged sword. Honestly, with Apple’s repairability where it is and where google is as a wholesale data miner, what are the options?

At 7:50 you did the wrong calculation there for the battery life. Your testing consumed 21% battery on 15PM and 27% on 14PM and you said it's 6% better. NO. Because, based on your number you can perform the same test on 15PM 4.76 times and on 14PM 3.70 times. It makes 15PM having 28% better battery life than your 14PM. And this is not something I'm claiming, it is based on battery percentages of your phone.

Okay but the battery problems with the 14 wasn’t initial battery life. That battery life was fantastic. The issue came later on with how fast the battery degraded. So we can’t really say the 15’s battery is the same or bad until we reach the same point when the 14 degraded. There’s nothing to “fix” battery wise with the 15 pro. Yet. That’s like back when the note 7 had its explode gate, having one explode then the next year getting the note 8 and saying “well the battery life is the same except it hasn’t exploded yet, but last years did so PLEASE FIX THE BATTERY LIFE”. Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense does it. If anything, the fact that’s it’s matching the 14 pro’s day 1 battery life using a more demanding chip is impressive. If in half a year it begins to degrade as fast, THEN by all means say it’s just as bad.

The 15 Pro Max apparently overheats even more than the 14 Pro Max, with the same issues relating to that.
Despite all the big deal talk about titanium, the 15 Pro Max bends more easily than the iPhone 14 Pro Max (whether that matters or not).
The glass breaks easily from drops.
Whatever they coated the titanium in appears to scratch fairly easily, though I'm sure most people will buy protective cases to protect it.
There's apparently only $30-worth of titanium in it (watch JerryRigEverything 's teardown).
Very expensive repairs of parts Apple won't supply to third party repair agents who charge vastly less for repairs.
Reviewers now casually talk about Apple Care as though with Apple's changes it's taken for granted that it's mandatory - yet they don't factor in the price of both the phone and Apple care, in their reviews.
Still no 8K video, I think we're all hoping their implementation knocks it out of the park but for yet another years, we're not there, yet.
    - or a lot of the features that people with Android phones take for granted.
Photographs are, as you say, incrementally improved but they've improved with other just-released Android phones, Apple's strong selling point is that it scores well for consistency from its AI, which is certainly a big deal, but falls short in detail resolution and several other areas, which considering the way it's marketed and the price of admission, is disappointing. It's saving grace, for me, notwithstanding the lack of 8K recording, seems to be video where it remains class leading. And perhaps that's enough, I just can't justify the price, personally.
Plus there are some welcome new features but like a lot of people, I'm fed up of what amount to almost product placement buy-though-my-links reviews rather anything approaching a well rounded review that details both pros and cons.
Please keep piling pressure on Apple, re right to repair, not enough reviewers have been doing this, and if you could do a product by product break down of the cost of repairing Apple products through Apple, any rebates, etc, that, also, would be really helpful content.
Thanks. Hope it was a fun trip.

@@tonyburzio4107 I had the phone a day early on Thursday. Everything was set up and indexing for Thursday and Friday. Saturday was my full day with it.

100% with you on this!! They're hypocrites acting like they're doing good while destroying their second hand market. Creating loads of e-waste and preventing the less fortunate to own an older but still functional iPhone. Shame on you Apple.

You came all the way here for a phone? Why did we get it earlier? I mean I got mine last week but I wasn't aware it was "early". I can't tell if it's the IOS or the phone but is it me or it heats up a lot? I'm enjoying it over the 12 pro from 3 years ago. I also noticed that with the UsB C, if I connect it to an external screen with power, it actually projects! Didn't happen with the lightning. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed your trip though.

As an iPhone 15 Pro owner I’m embarrassed to report Apple includes a USB 2.0 cable in the box. I would have preferred Apple ship no cable than add in instant e-waste.

You forgot to mention that iphone 15 pro and pro max are literally less durable in a substantial way than the 14 pro series. That is a big deal when they spruce this phone and its allegedly stronger titanium frame as a major upgrade and a unique feature this year.

I can't agree on the 5x camera. Every single one of those shots looked soft to my eye (with exception of the portrait where the subject is a lot closer to the lens). You could just crop in on the 70mm for a similar result. Maybe it's just the YT compression?

Correct - Apple does not want cost-effective repair. Apple wants you to buy a new one. As a consumer, "Bad, Apple. You are VERY bad." As an AAPL shareholder "Well Done!"

we do have one hope of this changing and that’s if the EU gets involved and hawks the change on them like they do/did with all of us throughout the years I like Apple undeniably but also I can’t lie I wish they had a Scott Forestall or someone else that is WaltDisney/SteveJobs equivalent because that’s otherwise the only way they would change. I’m using a 13 Pro Max to type this on as a FYI.

I think the EU is taken measures on user repair ability. This might force apple to make the necessary changes like they did with the type C, so they don’t lose that market.

I wouldn't exactly call them a huge redesign. They added a new build material but still haven't changed the way the device looks. For the last five years it's like looking at the same device each iteration. They haven't even changed the way that the camera housing looks.

The point of serialising a piece of glass with magnets on it, is they can then tell if the phone has been opened by a 3rd party. Liquid damage shouldn't happen, and should be covered under warranty if it does, as they are water resistant. Not so after a device has had a 3rd party repair. I believe that sort of thing is Apple's motivation. They don't want to have to replace parts in a phone, or the entire phone, because the customer cheaped out on a generic repair and were left with a non water resistant device for example. It's a super pain though, would be easier if this was not the case. Years ago scammers would carefully open a near new iPhone, take out good parts and put bad parts in (like an old battery, defective camera etc) short something out so it wouldn't turn on again, and then have someone take it into an Apple retail store... "Sorry sir, I can see the issue. We'll replace that phone under warranty for you" and Apple would swap the whole device out. From what I've heard this was very commonplace and where a lot of the second hand market of 'genuine' parts came from. So I think that's what Apple's trying to prevent, mass fraud... rather than stopping someone at home from fixing their broken device themselves, which they don't really care about.

Disagree on the night time camera performance differences between the 14PM and 15PM. In your comparison picture at 6:56 you can see that the street lights give less of a glare on the 15PM. That’s due to a new coating on the lenses to reduce light glare.
    Otherwise, nice video!

A good service is one that you never need. I use Apple devices since 2012, so far I had zero (0) repairs needed in an Apple device. Yes I always have my phone in a thin case plus a display protection glass, on average I drop it once every 1-2 years. Never been a problem. But yes Apple is in for profit, not for repairability.
The 5x portrait lens is too long for many situations (like indoor), also a maximum of possible bokeh is not necesarily a good thing.

Well this old normal is simple, and has missed a KISS feature that was taken away from me. So the "Action Button" for this normal it will be the return of the "Home" screen button/sensor. On my iPhone 11 Pro still to this day more times than not can not get the swipe up to work. So it is swipe, swipe, swipe up until it returns to the "Home" screen. My hope is that I can map the "Action Button" via "Shortcuts" to a landing page for multiple "ShortCuts".
*** Please find a at least 3 port USB C hub that I could use to rig up to the new Apple 15 Pro Max so I could have power, external storage, and USB C microphone. ***
With you on the battery issue. Would have thought at least a ten percent gain in battery life. Will have to see what the MagSafe battery options are.
