- South Bay residents remain on edge as a group of teenagers on e-bikes continue terrorizing the community. Multiple law enforcement agencies have responded to reports of unruly teenagers on bikes riding recklessly on streets.
The teens typically ride together in large groups along the Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach strands near the piers. Some bystanders said they’ve been assaulted or harassed by the bikers as they ride recklessly around town.

In Cali the motor has to be 750w to be considered an ebike. I bring my ebike home when I visit my family and I get stopped a lot. But since I put a Class 2 sticker on it, they just let me go. They have no idea. 🤣 But even if they figure out my bike is not that, I’m visiting from out of state. 🤷🏻♀️

I don’t think the media understands pedals and no pedals, just like at the state parks. There’s this eBike trail I ride, no class 3 e-bikes allowed. I bought a sticker on Etsy that’s says Class 2. I put that on my bike and when I get stopped at the park, they just look and tell me to ride safely. If they knew what they were looking at, they would see the motor on both tires which means 2000w is definitely not a Class 2. But I don’t ride all crazy to draw attention to myself. I just need to be fast enough to get away from bears or mountain lions.😂
Motorcycles go very fast, e-bikes only go up to certain miles an hour not as fast as a motorcycle or even a moped.

@@sbsk2526 my eBike is 2000w, just on throttle I can’t get to 45 mph, with pedal assist I can get up to 60. You can manually change the settings on the screen yourself to give the bikes more power (like jailbreaking it), no modifications on the wiring needed. None of the manufacturers recommend this, but a lot of people do. The e-bikes aren’t rated or tested to go that fast that it isn’t safe to do. But if I can’t pedal a bear or mountain lion at 60 mph, I deserve to get mauled. E bikes speed vary with the rider itself. I’m 5’2” tall, I’m light weight so my bike can go faster than if a heavier bigger person was on it.

I saw some kids riding e-motocross looking bikes in traffic and faster than the traffic flow, weaving around cars. No plates, no mirrors, no lights, not stopping for stop signs and most notably no experience. Parents who can afford it seem to be buying these for their kids, without realizing how dangerous these can be.
I see normal bicycles do that here all the time. It's called filtering and quite safe and legal.

It’s like this in almost all Southern California cities. Laws need to be enforced in California. Teens on these bikes are completely out of control . It’s not funny because in my area people are sick of it and now armed .

I have witnessed the same behavior in San Diego. The cops on the boardwalk cant do anything about them, the fast ones with several thousand watts can do sixty miles an hour in two seconds. Good luck catching them. Thats why they get away with it, they have no fear because no one can catch them. I saw one doing fifty plus miles an hour on the boardwalk!!!!! Its just a mater of time before someone loses their life to one of these entitled children.
This all came from not being able to discipline your kids. Time outs don't work. Kids don't fear their parents anymore. I'm from this area. Its full of stupid adults who are glued to their phones. The e bikes aren't the problem. Its the parents who are responsible of raising such bratty kids.
Learn to tell the difference between an ebike and an Emotorcycle. Ebikes are usually 750w go about 20mph and have petals. I don't like it when my hobby is tarnished due to poor reporting to the public.

they're lumping everything on two wheels and a seat as all ebikes. no distiction in the report of the different kinds. some can move with pedals on pedal assist 1 going 5mph for example versus those class 3 and up that don't have pedals and move faster. they are blaming the wrong thing. most of the problems are the people riding them irresponsibly, not the bikes themselves. it should be the rider's responsibility for any electric mobility vehicle like an e-scooter or a tesla. deliquents on bikes are different than someone riding responsibly. who get's the ticket? the one riding responsibly just because they're on an ebike, not the reckless kid who already drove away.

Ultimately it's about being a responsible rider and being mindful of the fact that it's a public roadway and you need to be respectful of other riders and drivers.

We were not allowed to ride our minibikes on the roads when I was a kid. We lived very rural with zero public transport or any way to get to riding destinations. I got yelled at a few times by cops when we got reported or caught. We certainly were not terrorizing anyone

Costa in MB. After school they ride in packs of 10+.
Here are the problems. Two weeks ago on Artesia a group of five e bikes, some with a passenger on Artesia Blvd. About half with helmets. They were in the #1 lane (fast lane), but were trying to get over to the slow lane. No signals on the bikes. The female lead would start to get over then get nervous and go back, follow the leader style. Repeat. I sped up to get away from them.
Another day four males were blowing lights at intersections on Artesia, but at one light the left hand turn lane had the green in the opposite direction. They had to swerve to miss the car who had the legal right of way.
They run stop lights and stop signs. They ride on the sidewalk and the street. They travel in the opposite direction of traffic flow.
I guess two boys have e-bikes somewhere down the street from me. I have watched them pass my house while standing on the seat and leaning over to steer. I assume going to and from Mira Costa.
Personally my household is nervous when backing out of the driveway after seeing the guys standing in their seats.
My fear is for their safety. I have no idea how the e bikes classified as a bike or motorized vehicle, nor do I know their rules of the road.
It would be interesting to know if accidents and injuries are up with bike (e bike) riders.

You pointed out one instance of a guy peeling out up the street, one e-moto being impounded and then chose to record video of a bunch of street legal ebikes locked up at bike corrals including the city's rental ebikes. Why the Hell are you demonizing all ebikes for your news story? Instead of trying to sensationalize a few instances to get ratings for a news story, why don't you try interviewing respectable as well as unruly ebikers to get the whole story before you hand in your verdict about a subject you obviously know nothing about? I've got a bunch of free time, why not interview someone like me that's been riding, building, repairing and modifying ebikes for over 15 years? I know why, because if you actually reported complete facts about a story, your news coverage wouldn't be controversial or interesting. I always "love" watching a reporter's fake anger and ire over a hot button topic to try and rile up their viewers so they can drag out a topic of interest as long as they can to get higher ratings for it. I won't technically call this fake news so much as half assed reporting. Oh wow you interviewed one random guy on the street, way to attack this news story from all angles. If these reporters were any lazier, they'd be asleep. This is some "in-depth" coverage right here oh my gosh you bet ya. Jesus Christ what a joke.

750 watt limit is stupid. There is a huge difference between a 100lb girl riding one and a 2-300lb man. A big guy needs more watts just to go up a hill. How about everyone just obey the traffic laws? I don't see anyone limiting these ridiculous 800 horsepower cars. They didn't even show any e bikes in that video anyway, those are e motorcycles.

An average human can pedal 200W, an athlete can put out 400W. 750W plus the rider's pedaling power is equivalent of over two professional athletes on a no license, registration, or insurance requiring bike, operated by juveniles to go on flats and uphill. Therefore it is not stupid at all. With governors, no one should be allowed to go over 18mph, where average riders ride their bikes about 12mph. I wonder what you'd call European countries limited e-bike powers to 250W?

Class 3 e-bikes are the fastest e-bikes you can get and max out at 750 watts and power is cut off at 28mph. Anything more is considered a motorcycle. The issue is lots of people are now buying these electric motorcycles which look like normal e-bikes.

@@sbsk2526 the point I’m trying to make is all these higher powered ebike are technically not considered e-bikes by the law. They are considered motored vehicles. Legal ebike are not considered motered vehicles and are considered the same as bicycles.

This video fails to tell you that these kids are of the darker persuasion, the same ethnic group of kids do the same thing down in Tampa in the middle of the night with dirt bikes and motorized four wheeler's.
So according to the resident they interviewed this is as kids just messing around? “I’d do it too.” Which means these kids when approached by the police could possibly be receiving a slap on the wrist.
What ever happened to parents being responsible for what minors do? Hold parents accountable for their lack of parenting and stuff like this will slow down.

2. Fine the companies selling these unregistered electric motorbikes as ebikes. It's a ploy to cash in on the ebike craze, stealing sales from safer ebikes by offering high speed electric motorbike toys.

I grew up in small town USA and needless to say the older crowd didn't care for our skateboarding around the courthouse, we skated the courthouse because of its concrete ramps, rails, steps, and walkways. When it became a problem a group of us petitioned the city council for a skate park. We gained permission from local businesses owners to stand on their property and speak with community members of all ages. Those signatures won over the opinion of the city council. (All the while wearing jncos and wallet chains).
I wish you would report correctly. If it is a motor, it is NOT an ebike, it is a motorized bike. Ebikes are ELECTRIC BIKES!! They have batteries, not motors.

Where i live I see young people with e0bikes and e-scooters running lights and stop signs. Some of these guys have hit pedestrians causing some injury, and they take off. Impossible to catch them. There have been instances where one of these guys would grab someone's phone, or purse, or simply push them over for fun.
Its not really about the e-bikes is it? A group of 16 yr olds could pull up out of a car and beat someone up or even pull up on motorbikes.
