  • I would’ve never thought that Pashto could sound this good in a very modern Elektro-pop song. All in One it was a great song, but nothing outstanding.
    Coke Studio Pakistan seems to be focusing more on visuals this year, which is really nice! I forgot to mention in my reaction that Rehma really has an incredibly strong voice.
    If I were to listen to the song only without seeing the video, I wouldn't say it's a Pashto song at all. I mean, Coke Studio modernizes cultural traditions and old beats, but this time personally, I did not like it. It was like an average modern song, unfortunately.

    No problem with an honest opinion. But as a pukhtoon, let me explain. Every visual depicted a portion of pushtoon culture. Secondly, it was the voice of a pushtoon to a world apart with a different language and culture to welcome which means “ harkalay “. The other person responded in kind to see his overwhelming hospitality. And then the rain of happiness rained over an arid dry rugged earth.
    The concept isn’t to depict the typical pushtoon tunes, rather it’s the ability to adapt and embrace a person from a 1000 miles into the hospitable arms of pushtoon wali.
    Ask an American soldier who has served in Afghan pushtoon culture with a good heart and he/she can tell you the ability of this only culture of Pakistan/ Afghanistan northwest region to absorb and welcome the well wishers even with clear stark cultural differences. I hope I was able to decipher it for you somehow.

      This explanation was needed! Thank you. I have to watch it again to get these details. That’s a blessing and a grudge at the same time for reaction videos. First time watching a song you do feel overwhelmed and you actually don’t know what exactly you should focus on. Especially if you’re not a native speaker and you have to read the lyrics. I really have to watch the magical journey to get a deeper understanding.

Two Pathan boys cranking out fab melodies in Pushto, Urdu and English. No need for lengthy zoom shots of traditional Pakhtoon faces to create a sense of rootedness. Just authentically themselves.

    This song is about how a guy has been looking for a lover his whole life and when he finds her, her presence becomes his peace so he's asking why are you driving me crazy. Gulay is a pashto nickname which means "sweetie" simply and the phrase used "You are the black of my eyes" is a famous phrase used to express love in pashto. So the whole video and song is about how two lovers meet, then celebrate under the moonlight whilst it rains.

    To each their own - this is my favourite song of this season yet. There is beauty in subtlety and fusion - not everything needs to be a 100% culturally distinct. The elements both visual and musical were sufficient. Otherwise there are plenty of pure pashtoon songs out there. I absolutely love this track!

      @sedanoour  Před měsícem +9

      Agreed and I’m not saying it wasn’t good. It’s just that the Pashton culture has so much more to it. Can’t even explain what I was missing. But it’s a good song especially the fusion of both singers is outstanding. 😄

      The song was on English melody.
      But zahoor Way of Singing is also similar to English singing.
      If u check his songs. He is not traditional pushto singer.
      If they choose traditional singer. It will be difficult to blend with English melody.
      I think they tried to create something based on fantasy too.

    same! when I first learned that the next song was going to be a pushto song, I expected something completely different from this based on their other releases so far but this is still a good song & the concept was really cute as well. the bridge is my favourite part. the mixing there & the addition of thunder was just chef's kiss but yea, I do hope they'll explore more of the pushtoon culture extensively in future. appreciate you for keeping it real everytime.

    My opinion is that since Pashto music is almost entirely traditional sounds and instruments, you probably feel this way. They've tried to create a new sound from it by modernizing the style of singing and instrumentation. It's like an earlier Coke Studio song 'Yo Soch' where Natasha Ali sung Pashto in the most melodic voice but gave it a very different almost European feel and she did it beautifully. Here Zahoor doesn't necessarily do that but since the song is hip pop/pop, it doesn't give the feel of a traditional Pashto song but I feel it's great to produce different kinds of music in Pashto and not stick to one thing because the language is so beautifully fluid that it's unfair to not explore its splendor in different styles of music.

      @sedanoour  Před měsícem +3

      Well honestly speaking It’s a great way to get more attention for pashtoon culture and to make it more popular. But with this song I have the feeling culture and modernisation are not well balanced. 🧐

      But it's a song that gradually grows on you

    • @aamnahere6250
      @aamnahere6250 Před měsícem +2

      @@sedanoour I think it's a matter of personal preference. It'll not be to everyone's liking because it's quite different. Ayi Ayi was not so drastically different because it was almost entirely a Sindhi song that had hip pop and pop elements with some modern instruments which gave it a modern feel while still being deeply rooted in the culture of Sindh.
      Harkalay, in my opinion, shows how beautifully two entirely different worlds can blend. I believe Xulfi (the producer of Coke Studio Pakistan) deliberately wanted to move away from a very traditional sound which is almost the defining characteristic of Pashto music. He also wanted to make it seamless with English while maintaining an almost otherworldly feel which the song beautifully captures. There are many Pashto songs that capture the culture in its traditional and folk glory so I am glad he did something different.
      This song shows Pashto in a completely different light showcasing its musical flexibility which hasn't been done before. Interestingly, even visually there are just as many elements of Pashtun culture in this song as there were of Punjabi culture in Maghrun La. In my opinion, it's just a unique interpretation of Pashto music which since it's quite different might not be for everyone and that's totally fine.

    As a Pathan myself, I have to agree with u. I too was expecting my culture to be represented musically when I I saw the trailer which made it clear that the next song is of Pushto. Am disappointed to see they chose modernization over cultural accuracy and representation. I think devoting a small section of the song to True Pashtun cultural music would have done the job, but unfortunately, they opted for this :[ Even if they wanted it entirely to be modern, they could've done it without reducing the cultural instruments; that's how many Pashtun artists are doing nowadays; using cultural instruments to create modern fusion. Believe me they sound fantastic!

      @@sedanoour Ofcourse you didn't say it was bad and you have every right to say that if you want, or stay neutral about it or love it, just be honest about it, or maybe if feel confused about it give it another listen with flushing old expectations. Sometimes when one has certain preconcieved expectations about something, but we get totally differentreal thing then it one can feel unsatisfying or disapointing or confusing, as you said you probably liking it more now lol. I only mentioned my favour towards it to show everyone have different taste or maybe due to circumstances of how take it in. I expected a little more cultural song like other songs, but it had modern pop beats to it (probably due to Abdullah Siddiqui being its co-producer) along with cultural instruments, but its certailnly much more modern than what I expected, still I really loved it. I think it can compete with all the top charting songs around the world and why always produce traditional songs? We can have a more traditional Pashto songs as well but why dont have this fusion as well, and Pashto music also varies from region to region as well and their culture aswell. Maybe you can also watch Magical Journey to know more. I absilutely loved this song and blend of Pashtoa nd English and great vocals, composition, beat rythm, video/visiuals and culture shown.

    You may be right from your perspective but as you say you were in KPK and you hung out there with people. This song is really a re-intro of Pashtun to the modern western leaning audience. Pathans have always been known for their hospitality but as you know KPK has beautiful natural beauty like Chitral and other places, excellent story telling and great food and yet after 911 they have gotten hardly any tourism and Pathans are basically thought of as Taliban and that's it. This is a great effort to show not only people of the region but also obviously western listeners what Pashtun culture is like. Honestly in my view, it is high time for Pashto songs and culture to infuse some modern elements into it so it is more popular within Pakistan as well as outside.

There are so many different cultures in pathan's nit just one culture and there are so many different types of dilects in pashto language as well..... what they showed is mardan side of pathans so maybe every season they try to bring all the dilects of pashto languages also i know you heard most of regional language songs with full energetic and high pitch vocals like ali zafar one but here the theme and the culture didn't suit that banger kind of feeling so they tried to made a soothing melody which suits the theme and visuals of the song and one last thing i want to mention you said coke studio is more focusing on visuals this time i think it's not a justified statement they create gem with singing aspects as well as visual aspects and the most amazing thing is xulfi and coke studio giving a chance to these hidden underrated gem artist to shine giving them opportunity that's the great thing because pakistan has not so many major platforms for musician's it's the only platform and every artist sing there heart out... They also set the theme of song that girl is from outside their culture. And pushto people are welcoming( harkalay) her. that they have open doors for anyone.
    And Attan at the ending on soft melody music. Which was visually beautiful with Rain.

    Hey Seda, you can listen to Ya Qurban from cs 11 it was an instrumental composition and it gives pure pakhtoon vibe with rubab and atan dance in the end. Do listen and react to it if you haven't . Tia !

    It was missing the Rabab, tabla, and not a typical Pashtoon culture but more modern pashtoon culture. Love your reaction and I agree with you . I am a Pashtoon and from Peshawar and didn’t feel the vibe 😊. Love from ♥️🇺🇸🇵🇰♥️but overall , great song with beautiful compositions .

    The theme of the song was that pushtu people welcome the people outside of their culture.
    Thats why they made fusion with english.
    But I think if Pushto had fusion with Urdu, it have kept the essence of Our country vibe.
    And message could have resonate with the people of Pakistan from Pushto people.
    But they wanted to make it globally that why English.
    Song was different and uniquely presented

    youre totally right regarding incomplete representation of the pashtoon culture. Being pashto speaker the pronunciation of pashto words were disastrous like he was chewing those words and made it hard to understand even for the native speakers. Most of the pashto lyrics didnt even make sense.
    Though the cultural event when kids were rubbing on ashes on their faces and raining has significant importance in pashtoon culture and history and it was portrayed masterfully.
