- Three games in two sets; that was all that an ailing Juan Martin del Potro was able to muster at the start of his fourth-round match against sixth-seeded Dominic Thiem. In obvious distress, hit hard by a virus, the 24th-seeded Argentine staggered through the start of the match and often appeared to be out on his feet through those first two sets (which took just over an hour to play). It was painful to watch del Potro’s obvious suffering and few - if any - figured he would even be able to finish. Indeed, if he’d had a corner man, the towel would very likely have been airborne.
But the individual nature of tennis tends to reward individual toughness, and after those first two sets, the remainder of the match was a telling testament to the toughness of the 2009 US Open champ. Somehow, some way, del Potro was able to raise his game above his illness, and once he found his feet, he turned his second wind into a gale.

I was at this match. My sister and I snuck down to the front just before the match began, found 2 empty seats about 5 rows back and sat down, thinking for sure we'd get booted any minute. We never did. What a match.

Back from 'two down???....That...is some serious resolve and stamina. the 'wonder boy'...wasn't ready at this time. I believe now, he's come more of age....( Thiem) and has earned his bones. Some body types are just too prone to injuries. There is a reason why he was injured like 70% of his career. So "if not" is more meaningful if it was some freak accident or something like that. Not in chronic conditions. Then even you can be the great.
Thiem is a very polite player and del potro is very much likeable!

Thiem seems to do this a lot: blazing start, then folds. He blitzed Nadal 6-0 in a first set, looked all-galaxy.....punted the 2nd and lost, choked the 3rd, won the 4th in a tiebreak, and ended up losing a 5th set tiebreak.

Remember this match very well. The atmosphere and crowd support for delpo was eletric. Domi did a big mistake in letting Delpo back in the match. He seemed done and completely out but once he had his food back in the door his serve and forehand was fireing!
Some more womens classics would be great. Venus vs Hingis 2000 SF, Venus vs Mauresmo 2002 SF, Dementieva vs Mauresmo 2004 QF, Pierce vs Dementieva 2005 SF, Venus vs Jankovic 2007 QF...for example ;) That would be so awesome! :)
