- Shooting and showing the classic Colt SAA in it's original configuration of .45 Colt and 7 1/2" barrel. What a masterpiece!
By the way, if you've not seen my "Basics" video on Black Powder frames, check out that video in my "Basics" playlist to see the minor difference in the frames back then.

Hickok45 videos are filmed on my own private shooting range and property by trained professionals for educational and entertainment purposes only, with emphasis on firearms safety and responsible gun ownership. @disturbedproject, The original .45 Colt rounds loaded with a full case of black powder were very warm. I've shot them. They really kick, which is why they were cranked down a bit, as I understand. The .44 magnum has more upside by far, though, with modern powder. You can blow up a Colt SAA with really hot modern loads of smokeless powder. Most factory .45 Colt ammo is moderately loaded. You have to load your own if you want some heavy loads for a Marlin Rifle or something.
"Besides, I don't think you're cut out for an automatic in the first place; you tend to twist your elbow a little to absorb the recoil. That's more of a revolver technique."
good old times... once in a while i play it...

"Six shots. That thing only carries six shots. The Makarov carries eight. You have a get a feel for how many rounds you have left."
You’re pretty good...
Pretty...good??
@gunner45acp , Yes, the screws will loosen a little; you always want to check the screws regularly on single actions. And go ahead and spend a little money to keep some quality gunsmithing screwdrivers around.
@bigbassbosky, See my other Colt SAA videos.
@ImWatchinTheTube, Yep, as gorgeous as a Colt SAA is, the 1860 Army is considered by many, including myself, to be the "supermodel" of handguns. It's a beautiful gun.
@TheSoberIrishman21, Yes, that WOULD be a little "picky" for most viewers, as well as perhaps complicating the issue. The 2nd Generation gun in this video also has different grips, metallurgy, & powder in the cases.
One of my very favorite pistols and this is quickly becoming my favorite channel. You beat anything that is on TV today hands down. Thanks, I really enjoyed this.
@Lothiron, Yes, I use it to separate different loads and such mostly.
Oh, he might have went on livin' but he made one fatal slip
When he tried to match the ranger with the big iron on his hip
This is the greatest hand gun ever made, The Colt Single Action Army.
Six bullets. More than enough to kill anything that moves.
I second that
@Deathspirit232, It can be very hard on the gun's mechanism. I might do it with a new Ruger or something, but not with a Colt.
I think the Wyatt Earp quote is: "Fast is FINE but accuracy is FINAL. You must learn to shoot slow in a hurry."
Another enjoyable video, thanks.
Great video as always!.....Bought my first 45 long colt today....can't wait to hit the range! It looks like a hand held cannon!
You'll enjoy it. .45 Colt doesn't kick all that much.
Ayye, it's the big iron on the ranger's hip.
i´ve got to admit I just love your viedeos about the colt 45, because it just is a masterpiece from a great time periode
I have only a Ruger convertible Blackhawk in 357 mag or 9 mm in this mode. I do have a Ruger Single Six buntline which is a joy to plink with at the range. I have never fired a real Colt, but I know the Ruger handle on a single action feels really good. I think one of my favorite things about the channel is the sheer appreciation of history. Jim Arness was a classy fellow in every sense of the word. I liked Chester and Festus almost as much.
Love it. We need a pic of Hickok45 in full John Wayne outfit with this gun and a lever gun.
I have shot a colt saa it is by far my favourite gun ever it was so fun to shoot with not that bad range or sights
13:00 minutes in, you can actually see the bullet flying through the air. Pretty awesome.
Same with 11:30 when he hits the 2 liter.
Ha! That's Major Ocelot to you...and don't you forget it.
you're pretty good
That was some fancy shooting....you're pretty good
I'm not big into historical guns or anything, but that is one damn good looking machine. BEAUTIFUL.
Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything ~ Wyatt Earp
Six bullets... more than enough to kill anything that moves.
BeefyLevinson your pretty good.
...ugh MY HAND!
+Mikey Bundoc You were lucky! We'll meet again!
+Super Super Hero This is the greatest handgun ever made.
Hiding won't help you! I understand the bullets, you see. I make them go where I want!
I absolutely love lever and single action videos. Thank you !
John Taffin is by far my FAVORITE writer on revolvers.
Handguns have come a long way, but there is still nothing made by current technology that is as beautiful as the Colt SAA
Clint Eastwood carried a 7.5 inch SAA in High Plains Drifter. This was awesome to watch and an excellent pistol history recap. I hope to find a Colt SAA for myself eventually as it is a very nice peace of history and in general a reliable and just very cool gun.
Sir, your marksmanship never ceases to amaze me!
I've got one of those in the original caliber with a 7.5 inch nickel plated barrel, black grip and silver 'J' stamped on each side of the grip. The greatest handgun ever made that I never leave my hometown without
Good looking hardware
the loudest noise in the world is when you hear a click when you expect a bang.
i love how you can see the bullets in flight when your shooting at the gong.
I love the.45 inlay on the ivory handles.
hehehe....those old TV shows bring back memories! No question, Gunsmoke was one of the best shows ever made.
I was born in 1957 and just had my 65th birthday. Hmmm 🤔 I wonder what would make a nice BDay gift? Enjoyed the video very much.
Hickok, would love to see some "shooting from the hip!" I've been trying it with my SAA clone, and I'm getting pretty good at it. Just hand/eye coordination I guess. Thanks for the great video!
I wish my hands were as steady as yours! Offhand shooting with a 7.5" Colt .45, incredible!
Really excellent video! I need to get me one of those.
Did you
Was at a local gun show today and was going to buy a 357mag version of this gun and after I went to the ATM for cash it was sold when I came back to get it... alas, the search continues. Nice shooting!
The Colt Single Action Army is the greatest revolver ever made? DEFINITELY!
@saintsslash5, At the loading press, preparing lots of rounds of ammo to send downrange. :-)
that has to be the most beautiful sounding gun ever.
The first 15 secconds of this video was... Beautiful.
How could anyone dislike any of hickok45's videos
"This is the greatest handgun ever made."
Sorry, couldn't help myself. :)
Guns of a true gunslinger. You have not forgotten the face of your father.
Say thankee Sai. Long days and pleasant nights :)
@1865ify, Yes, my dad had one.
Hickok,
I have a fixed blade knife that my dad let me buy in the NC mountains at Cherokee when I was around 10 y/o. I am 58 now. On the back of the genuine leather sheath is stamped made in Twaiwon. lol. I guess the natives went to the far east from time to time.
My clone in 7.5" barrel is a Ruger old Vaquero. I got it in .44 magnum because that was a less expensive round in 1995. Today not so much difference. Of course today I can't handle the magnum rounds so shoot even more expensive .44 special lol.
That's my new dream gun! Besides m1911 of course
Don't think it would be healthy for a guy to get in a gunfight with tis guy ! You gotta shoot a lot I mean a lot to master constant hits with a SAA Great Job Sir !!!
That is a gorgeous gun, love the opening shot! I want one!
The black powder needed longer barrels to achieve muzzle velocity... smokeless required less barrel length to achieve the same velocity
This is exhilarating.
6 bullets, more than enough to kill anything that moves
Jason Armstrong Especially in the movies.
Patton's gun: a colt saa with ivory grips. AMERICA F*CK YEA
I love Gunsmoke,my grand dad watched that show all the time,They had been re-ran many times them and I would see an actor the was really young in the show.It was confusing for a four year old i guess.Love the video's and all the good info you pass along. It's very entertaining and you always learn something cool.Keep up the good work.
@DrGreenfun, Yes.
I own the Colt Single Action in long barrel and it is a fine gun. I also own the S&W 500 which is without a doubt the greatest revolver I have ever fired.
The best old west rifle in my opinion is the Sharps 1874. I have the Shiloh Sharps Montana Rough Rider in 50-90
@FloridaRaider, Yeah, and I'm such a great actor! :-)
Taffin is right about the SAA
your videos are great :)
"Still...that was some fancy shooting. Pretty good."
@edgybob1, Yeah, they really knew how to build a solid canoe back then! :-)
lonesome dove is another great western, you shoot this one very accurately, one handed no less. i think i may have to look into getting one of these beauty's for myself. another great video as also
Kudos Hickok for rockin the straw hat
Just like everything else in this ol' world, the latest, greatest grabs the most attention. Not that I have a problem with it all, but it's interesting that after almost 5 years this video has just over 166,00 views. Over 1.5 MILLION for Hickok's Glock 43 video. Then again, not many of us can go down to the gun store and pick up a real Colt SAA either, for a multitude of reasons.
Beautiful! Piece of art!
I keep coming here, im a sucker for this revolvers.
Wow another great video... In slowmo part you can clearly see the bullet in flight. Great*****
*as Doc Holliday*
Look, Darlin'...it's Hickok45. The deeeadliest pistolier since Wild Bill, they say!
+Angus Gibson Too funny! I always enjoy a good Tombstone quote! There are so many!
Yes
Reminds me of....ME.
😂😂😂😂😂
Actually, besides Ben, Hoss and Adam both used long barrel revolvers. And Peter Breck did in The Big Valley. Unfortunately, Cheyenne did not carry a long barrel Colt. His had the 5.5" barrel
I like that you wear the belt backwards to get a crossdraw. I never whoulda' figured that out myself.
A prime example of an good old fashioned design that still works. You won't be throwing out 600 rounds per minute with a Colt SAA, but it's not gonna take many .45 Colt's to get your point across.
My favorite video u have ever made
Damn...I'd hate to be on the other end of one of those at any range with Hickok behind it!!!
that slow-mo at the end at the gong, the bullet looks like it hooked left or was maybe in a rifled twirl through the air. great shot hickok45! that is a must own gun... if you can afford one!
Actually Mr. Hickok you were right about Hoss. He eventually did carry a Colt SAA or a clone in the 7.5" barrel length with either Ivory or Pearl grips. Hope fully Ivory based on what General Patton said! lol Earlier in the series tho he carried a 1858 Remington Cap and Ball.
Reloading like this! It´s a revolution! (Winning with a .45...)
@Excalibur01, I've owned one, but not for over ten years.
That is the gun I see in my dreams from the pearl grips to the 7 inch barrel
I especially loe the videos where you shoot classic weapons. More!
Hey :-)
I just love your videos and i have sene many of them several times :-). I love when you put a Little bit of history about the weapons in your presentation.
I also shoot blackpowder guns. I have the Colt model 1851, 1860 and the DA 1886. nice guns to shoot.
Keep up the nice work and keep uploading.
Kenneth from Denmark Europe
Reloading like this! IT'S A REVOLUTION!
+stuntmayne43 Revolver Ocelot Feelings...
I love seeing the slo-mo on those...
Single action revolvers are a blast. One downside is that I prefer the removable cylinder. For some reason I just can't come around the old style cylinders. Either way the SAA is a time peace. Great gun, Good Vid Hickok
in the movie tombstone curly bill brocius, morgan earp, billy and ike clanton and many of the other cowboys carry them and a little known fact that in real life doc holidays main gun was a 7.5'' colt saa and his bac up was colt thunder in .41 colt
You mentioned TV westerns where the characters carried the 7.5'' barrel length, All of the Cartwrights brothers and Ben carried the 7.5'' barrel length. You may have noticed that none of the gun belts had cartridge loops, because Bonanza was set in the 1860's after the Civil War, before the cartridge revolvers were invented, but they carried the 1873 Colt SAA. I don't know why the writers and the prop dept did that, but they did.
Thanks, Sam Colt.
That is one fine firearm.
I need to buy one of these for my dad. Vietnam vet who LOVES Westerns.
No, it was a company called Great Western, based in LA. They used some parts from Colt, such as hammers and main springs, but were the first true Colt clones. Most of the western TV series from the 50's, 60's, and 70's used the Great Western SAA revolvers. They were inexpensive, compared to the Colt SAA, and the Colts were too expensive to use as a prop.
This is like watching the GUN Discovery Channel!!!! Nice one Hickok45
Hickock, you could be Marshall Dillon in a Gunsmoke sequel. -about the same height and you've already got the gun.
Hickok, can you try to do a video on the Remington 1875 New Army? Thanks!
the sights are amazing
Nice gun and hat Hickok.
"Shoot slow, real fast."
god!!! in the minute 12:45 can see the bullet traveling against the target! damn i love this vidios, thanks!
Thank you hickok for being such a good teacher of fire arms! By the way what kind of cigar box's do you use for the ammo?
"Let me show you why they call me Revolver"
old pa really enjoy, he’s laugh after almost every single shot
