I love that Rosamund Pike spends the whole movie saying some truly unhinged stuff in such a nonchalant way. Every line she utters is pure gold.

Oxford alum here: the first bit of the movie is really accurate. The dinner at the start is like a fresher's dinner where you meet everyone in your year and you have to wear gowns.
The three person class is a tutorial, which is the main way teaching is done in Oxford. It's rarely more than 3 students, and this personal attention is one of the reasons Oxford is such a good university. You write an essay every week and then discuss/defend it in your little group. You'll swap tute partners and professors each term as you rotate through subjects.
A pigeonhole or pidge is like your personal mail box in college. There's an internal mail system and that's how you deliver essays, send things to girls you fancy, receive invitations to societies and get your post from home. Even these days a lot of professors do things the old fashioned way and mark by hand.
I was there at the same time as Fennell, but at different colleges. We went to a couple of the same parties but she was socially just incredibly posh and pretty much exactly like the family portrayed here. Her 18th birthday was featured in Tatler, a national magazine for rich folk

The celebration outside college (actually Exam Schools) is the end of first year exams. It's a recent tradition to get "trashed" and it's a lot messier than depicted here. I got covered in shampoo, foam and glitter. The flowers they're wearing in their lapels indicate what exams they're doing - white for first exam, red for last and pink for any in-between. So when you see someone in the morning with a red carnation you can congratulate them about to be taking their last exam

As much as people might think a family like this surely doesn't exist, I can assure you they do. An employee of mine was having an engagement party, and when I looked at the address on the invite, I found out it was on the side of town I'd never been to with 5+ million dollar homes. I had to be let in through a huge security gate by actual security guards for their community. The dinner was almost like the one at the party. A bunch of self absorbed rich people talking about rich people things, not actually listening to anything anyone else had to say. Later as the party was winding down around midnight, my employee got blindingly drunk. He began screaming in the house which only had a few guests left. Then when I went in to say good night and pick up my keys I'd left on the table by accident, he began swearing and actually lunging at me. The family all just sat around as if it wasn't happening. No one even moved or looked up. IT WAS NUTS!!!! His brother whom I'd never met was the only one to actually get up and try and stop him while the rest of them discussed an upcoming Christmas party. I've never driven so fast out of a place in my life. My other friend who was with me had to keep checking with me to make sure I was okay. The next day at work, I wanted nothing to do with this guy. When he came in for his shift, all he did was just smile and hand me an envelope with a card that simply read "sorry." F---kin hell. I wanted to be like what the f--k is wrong with you and your family because wtf. True definition of WASP family.

To see Felix's dad in his breakthrough role, look for _Withnail and I_ (1987). Two unemployed actors borrow the key to an uncle's rural cottage but find their impromptu holiday less recuperative than they expected. A black comedy loosely based on the director's own life in the 1960s.

I was waiting for your reactions to Saltburn and you did not disappoint! Clarus your expressions during some of the key moments in this film were priceless. Many viewers have compared this film to The Talented Mr. Ripley or Parasite (as you said) but I'm old and see it very similar to Something For Everyone (1970) starring the fabulous Angela Lansbury as a countess and a Michael York as the young man who covets her castle, position and wealth. Michael worms his way onto and thru her staff, the countess, her daughter and of course....her son. A dark comedy with a lighter, comedic tone. No bath tub or menstruation on screen but the boys do take a nude swim in the lake together. Delightful. Give it a watch if you can find it. 🏳‍🌈 Also, I hope Barry wore protection when he filmed the f*ck*ng Felix's grave scene, otherwise he opened himself up for a nasty UTI.

There's a fair few American reactors who don't think the depiction of the British aristocracy in this movie is accurate. As someone who worked as a butler at a stately home, I can assure that while it's somewhat exaggerated for comic effect, it's not inaccurate! There's a wide gulf between the public facade of respectability and how they actually live, and Saltburn captures that really well. When Americans think of the British aristocracy, they typically imagine stuffy politeness, staid ritual and ceremony, perfect manners. Erm no. Reckless extravagance, decadence, drugs and wild parties is nearer to the mark. They just keep it behind closed doors. 😉

Fun fact: Barry Keoghan marked his script Oliver #1, Oliver #2, Oliver #3 and so on earmarking & representing the different psycho Oliver's needed. Genius. The film is a masterpiece in lies, greed, envy, psychology, power, classism, revenge, deception & manipulation. Jacob Elordi is Australian btw. This movie should win so many awards but it won't because of how uncomfortable some of the scenes are.

don't know whether the controversy over saltburn precluded it from the fanfare, but i guess there's not much of rush for yall to see the oscar nominees. if you choose to go through the list, please watch 'past lives'. it's a quiet movie with an outsized fandom of reviewers considering it the best movie of the year. it should've easily been included in actress, original screenplay, director, score, cinematography and perhaps 2 supporting actor nominations. it's a subtle lower budget independent released too early in the year w no major studio backing and a limited theatrical release. how it even got nominated by a self-congratulatory industry award show for best picture speaks to it's effect on the audience.

    • @HuntingViolets
      @HuntingViolets Před 5 měsíci

I just watched _Past Lives._ If people wanted to be upset about a movie nominated for screenplay and Best Picture but not for its female director, I think they could have gone with this one. (Really, with twice as many Best Picture nominees as Best Director nominees, there is not way to avoid half at minimum of the one not having a match in the other.) But, beside the point. A good one to react to. Also, not nominated but could have been: _All of Us Strangers_ would be another good one to react to.

a similar comment I made in another channel:
this is shot and promoted much like an Agatha Christie-style mystery novel, much like Knives Out was: saturated colors, high-class environments, lots of plotting and double-crossing, you know the drill.
the difference being, over-the-top goofy posh characters like those in an Christie novel, don't exist...
these people here? as depicted here? they do.
and many of them now rule England.
    think about that.
