- In past tutorials we’ve gone over ways to create unique patterns using various shapes, such as circles and polygons. However, today we’ll be going over how to create a geometric-style line pattern. This Illustrator line pattern tutorial will walk you through the entire process of creating your own line patterns. Not only that, but the finished design will be a repeatable tile that can be used as a pattern swatch.

Can you make a tutorial on how to make illustrations (those nice looking terrain wallpapers)? That will be helpful.
Good tutorial, but it will be interesting to see more about the pattern options and configurations.
You have the absolute best tutorials to date, you say exactly what tools you are selecting, where to find them and what to do, your last tutorial I was able to follow no problem, but for some reason, this one is not wanting to cooperate on the steps right at 5:56 when you select the shape builder tool to delete the protruding ends, when I do it, for some reason, my bottom has an extra section sticking out, no big deal, but when I try to click ALt and drag to delete just the protrusions, it deletes the entire left half, I half gone back almost a hundred times and can't find where I am going wrong.
I managed to find my problem. I was missing 1 single step between pausing and going back to AI, lol. Do you plan on doing similar tutorials with similar type of patterns?
Nice! Can you make this tutorial, but with Inkscape? :)
love from bangladash
Hi and Thanks. Whauuu great, at the end you make a pattern, then what to do with that to actual use it? I use illustrator to design only for plotter, vinyl cutter and need continuous lines connected (joined) and none on top of each other. I use pathfinder -> outline that get rid of what I want. Unfortunately that gives me thousands individually lines sharing endpoints. (anchors). Is there a way to join all these so become single line where possible?
How do you know what portion to cut out?
I don't know if its too easy to spot the tool or not, but i really want to know how to "make" that pattern to be scalable and croppable. "Make" like Blend tool and then outline stroke, to transform paths into shapes.
How can I export this as a whole pattern.
I reached till 10:41 using all the steps you explained. But after that when I am trying to delete other portion left outside of red rectangle, it also deletes the design I created. Can yo explain how I can solve this?
brother made video on business cards.... BTW this video is great as well
I cannot for the life of me get the shapes to fit together in a pattern once I have the initial shape and start copying it and I'm 99% sure it has to do with vertical distribution at 4:05 but I cannot fix it.
can you please teach us how to expand the Illustrator Pattern to vectors if the patterns are multicolors.
Maybe not possible?
Where does it save those patterns?
My GD teacher has the entire class do this and other videos form you
I became stuck at 6 mins. I used the shape-building tool to remove the two triangles sticking out at the bottom, but drawing the line again to unify the lines deleted them. I have watched numerous times and I can't work out what I missed.
Tooooooo lengthy process.
I mean pattern is nice but it can be done in easier way compared to this.
