    For pee-chilling a cooler, you can also freeze one of the water jugs, the take it out the day of, and then you still have a jug of cold water.

    I think the planning of the trip is almost as much fun as the trip! I go on a lot of one or two night getaways so I have a master list I keep on my phone of things to pack, makes it easy and stress-free and I can be ready in about half an hour! And I'm always adding to the list. Regarding the ice in the cooler, I wash out 2 liter milk jugs and fill with water, keep in the freezer and use them instead of blocked ice. No mess when they thaw and I can use the water for extra water if I need it. I also freeze my water bottles the night before

    • @SUVRVing
      @SUVRVing  Před 5 lety +2

      Yep, using frozen ice jugs is a great idea for shorter trips, like the ones you said you go on. Thanks for watching, Nancy!

    After planning a trip I hand my car over to my son. He checks and changes fluids and vaccums and cleans. He takes such good care of me.

    One thing I would add for 'weather planning' it might be sunny all day without rain or storms but WIND can ruin a trip if it's strong enough. I completely ignored wind in weather forecasts till it almost got me killed on a mountain climbing trip. It was 75 mph wind in the mountains where there were no trees and 35 mph wind on the ground. It was so windy I was getting hypothermia from it even after wrapping myself in a thermal blanket which tattered to pieces because of the wind. I couldn't move in any direction without the risk of getting blown to my death. So check for rain, check for storms, check for wind even if neither of the first two are present.

      Yep, a great point. Wind can be brutal! Thanks for commenting.

    Thank you. I’ve been planning my trip for 2 months now. I’ve never car camped before so lots of time consuming prep work, but after this I should be set. I’m trying to be very conscious about purchases so I don’t impulse buy a bunch. I start with shopping on Amazon and putting things in my cart as I think about it (or see it in a video👍) , but then ‘save it for later’, then I can go back and look thru my lists and rethink about what I really need vs what I can substitute out or modify from gear I already have. It’s saved me money and clutter and is more respectful to the Earth I am exploring.

    Your mindset is from seasons of ongoing trips - I am taking in your knowledge, here, on planning the trip itself, great ! I always bring everything I need- and more. Maybe I don’t need 3 first aid kits, but found each one has different things in it,, except the multitude of bandaids. Ultimately, for me, the trip tells me what I really need. I guess I’m not a minimalist

    Packing for trips is always chaotic for me.... usually take 100 things I don't need and forget at least one thing i do.... haha But we do the mileage pics too... very helpful to know how far and how efficient we travelled

    You are such a planner. Me too. You have talked about many other things. Were these included in the other categories? (In no order: Money, credit cards, licenses, passes, reservations, backup plans, emergency numbers (towing, medical care), shower water, let folks know where/when, script some of videos, cleaning stuff for self, car, food, plates, pans, etc. Clean linens on bed. plan/download entertainment. Dry ice, blue ice, freeze food for end of trip, my friend. Plan clothes. )

    Every single time I'm prepping and packing and trying to remember everything I need to deal with, I tell myself, "Okay, after *this* trip, I'm gonna make checklists so I don't have to wrack my brain trying to remember everything and inevitably forget something." Then I take my trip, come home, and forget about making a checklist until it's too late as I'm prepping the next trip, and I tell myself, "Okay, after *this* trip..." Given that your prep is very similar to mine, instead of actually building my checklists, I think I'll just rewatch this video a few days before each departure. 8^D Thanks for covering your process, as usual some good ideas here I hadn't thought of.

    Thanks for sharing - I love how you presented things - with a list. Perhaps a good video would be how you use caltopo and Gaia for some of us that want to get more organized on the trip route planning. Keep it up, I have learned a lot from you and love your enthusiasm for trips. I travel in a similar manner in my Subi Forrestor but not as organized yet. ;-)

    I found lots of similarities here to what I do. I like to use Evernote on my phone for my to do list. I use the check boxes and mark off those last-minute items the day of the trip. I also group my items into major categories such as cooking, bedding, stove and fire making, and toiletries, etc. That helps me think about everything the week or so before. I don't go nearly as often as you do so on this last trip the week before felt really hectic but it all paid off and I had everything I needed.

    If you haven't already done it, add to your master checklist the expiration dates of anything, seldom used, that requires periodic replacement. Two examples: OTC meds and water purification tablets. This would also include food/drink items stashed in emergency kits. IMO, better off not to have water purification tablets than to have old ones that may no longer be effective.

    Have you ever considered carrying one of those satellite emergency communicators (e.g., “inReach” by Garmin)? It was suggested to me by someone I recently met while camping, who coincidentally travels and camps in a RAV 4 like you.

    The point one I got the most out of, is taking a picture of the odometer. I've been writing the mileage on fuel receipts, which i inevitably lose one or two on a weeks trip.

    *Forgive this ignorance in advance:* I had no idea so much went into planning for these trips. I thought you just popped up and hit the road. Not quite that spontaneous, but not too far from that either.

    • @SUVRVing
      @SUVRVing  Před 5 lety +1

      I don't plan much as far as a day-to-day itinerary. As far as seeing/doing things, I have a list of things I want to see and do, and then basically I just head out and do what I feel like doing. But getting stuff ready before the trip does take time and effort. Thanks for watching!
