June 11, 1994. It’s the opening night of The Petersen Automotive Museum, and Hollywood is out in full force. But it’s not the celebrities we usually think of - it’s the cars they drive. None of this would have been possible without the charity and automotive passion of the museum’s namesake: Robert E. Petersen. How did he turn his passion for hot rodding into the modern car show? How did he, without a formal education, turn an 8-page, 25 cent magazine into one of the world’s premier publishing companies? And how would he come to create an automotive mecca in the heart of LA? Today on Past Gas: The story of Robert E. Petersen and The Petersen Automotive Museum.

I was watching while making dinner, and when it was done my MIL came out to the kitchen. Right at that moment James said "if i could just be a sneaky little baby hiding behind the seats, but with a man brain you know". She got a great laugh and i got an even better one. Thanks for that.
Peterson museum is fantastic but another absolutely amazing car museum is the Nethercutt museum. It is just unbelievable!!
i do not know about America, but over here in Europe, almost every 2 months there are amateur rallye happenening. and they cover every class. modern up to class B, even 60 year old cars tearing up dirt, roaring engines, spitting dirt into your face. maybe make an episode about that? you can see 555 subaru's or even the daredevil running a castrol livery 90's supra just straight up throwing grind into your face...
HELL yeah. Great idea. Nothing like that here!
In America people would complain about how “dangerous” it is. We unfortunately have NOTHING similar. NASCAR is shit in comparison to rally. OH MY GOD HES MAKIN A LEFT TURN HOLY SHIT ANOTHER LEFT TURN OH MY GOD A THIRD LEFT TURN 🙄
do one on city transit buses its a very useful mode of transport that has an interesting past.
I'm responding for the first time to any channel ever but I've got to say I'm responding to everything I have ever watched on all your channels I do lots of cool projects but I have few people in my life to share it with and no one who shares my own enthusiasm I find that connection through you guys and I applaud the connection's you guys have and love the content mixed with buddy bull shit wish I had a crew like you
Well done boys👏
Though being called a wally, it's actually not wally parks on the trophy. Good job on this one. One of the most underrated stories ever. If not for him and wally, drag racing as we know it wouldn't exist.
Love you guys!
Grate show! Funny as hell and informative and stuff. I bet they don't have a '67/8 Jaguar 420-compact....or even an early '50s Imperial at the Peterson! 😄
Ed Roth would make a good episode. Dude had a crazy life- Made a bunch of the wildest, most psychedelic, alien-looking show-rods ever, a decade before everyone else jumped on that trend. Started the first custom motorcycle mag "Chopper", before "Easy Rider" started up. Invented that whole trend of T-shirts with "Giant-head monster driving a cartoon hot-rod/muscle-car" prints, that went from the 60s to the 80s. Hung out with Hell's Angels and other 1%er clubs, and had altercations with them that ended in armed seiges, more than once. Had a hand in the rise of the "underground comix" scene, with Robert Williams, Bob Crumb and other Indy comic-book legends. Invented the whole thing of building kit trikes with 1/2 a VW floorpan and a fibreglass body. And had a rep as this insane wild-man (which was KINDA true), but he was also a lifelong teetotaller, devout Mormon, and dedicated family-man, despite being immersed in 60s/70s L.A counter-culture, neck-deep in drugs and sex and rock'n'roll.
Actually, Robert Williams (hot rod artist, probly most famous for the Guns'n'Roses "Appetite for Destruction" inner-sleeve- The painting of the robot with the graped girl on the ground) could probly make a decent episode, too. Also Ed Iskedarian. Maybe Norm Grabowski.
Ed Roth also claimed that when he was in the Army, his job was tracking UFOs (personally, I'd put this down to "colourful story-telling", but you never know...)
We actually covered him already! episode 192 :)
2:51 this was great 😂🤣😂
Episode Suggestion(s)
World of Outlaws sprint car series has a fun backstory. Steve Kinser vs Sammy Swindell could also be a good side story or an episode on its own
Can you guys do an episode on Fiat and the Agnelli family
Donut media: “ best I can do is fan mail on dumb corrections and Milwaukee”
What happened to James’ second podcast they talked about awhile ago lol
Please check out the Yellow river dragstrip disaster near Covington Georgia year 1969
Didn’t the driver just fall off the face of the earth????
which episode did they discuss David Gonzales...(with the homies figurines)
The lowriders episode i think
To be a fly on the windshield of that Ferrari
Do an Episode on Mulholland Drive racers or Mulholland himself
Magnus Walker is Rob Zombie 😂
Really sad about Mr. Petersen children, would have been an amazing legacy
There’s a Micro brew in the Buffalo area let’s go Pils Pilsner play on the football chant
Thank fucking god they turned on the cameras!!! 🙏
Like 10 secs after saying the kids passed james says he jelly of him.
3 donut posts in a day 😮 im dreaming
Who needs @$$-blaster sauce when your freindly local Catholic Priest will do it for free?
I'm sitting here listening to the podcast and where they were talking about all the pizza accomplishments in his early life and James said he hasn't done anything.
I hope he knows that's not true. I really think and I hope with all my heart that if you know 80 years from now they look back and they talk about Nolan, Joe and James and all the donut guys with the same reverence that you guys are talking about them right now because you really are an amazing part of the current car culture that we have and I think you know here in 2023 there's so many car people that know donut media and have gotten introduced to the more economic side of just loving cars. You know most car in automotive influencer right now I think are kind of like really more in the high dollar range and you don't see a lot of people doing realistic things like low car or money pit.
I really love donut and all the content you guys put out so thank you for doing that and I think that now and especially in the future you guys will be a huge milestone and the history of automotive vehicles.😊
it's photography not furtography
James, Montana is full
Not enough cigar vs cigarette horse dong references. Sad. 😂
I hope he gave his original partner a taste...
I dont know like joes vibes he ruins donut media

It's a shame most people using betterhelp are just people without friends, or people sponsored by them. We as people in general are heartless and selfish and it needs to change. I have a real counselor I meet with, in person, and they don't do anything for me that a friend wouldn't. They don't give me therapy, and most therapists are not therapists, they're counselors. They just listen. Like a friend. Most friends and family are jumping out of the way so they can push you onto counseling. It's sickening.
This is a sickening judgmental comment
This statement is the most r etarded thing I have read all day.
I love being a therapist to the best of my ability for my friends, sometimes I just wanna hangout but it's okay to hear them out and help em
Some people have trash family and it’s too much mental load to have a friend talk them through getting their life together or handling whatever problem they might be experiencing. You can’t shame people for just not being lucky as you are. But shame on you for making people feel bad about trying to get professional help for themselves
how could you possibly know that?
You guys are pretty enough but some pictures of "Pete" and maybe a photo of a car or two would be a nice addition to an informative podcast.
💃🙏💜🤣
