Unboxing the most famous shoes in the world? | Naomi Campbell's platform heels by Vivienne Westwood

- Could these be the most famous shoes ever made?
Join curator Elisabeth Murray as she unboxes the exact pair of Vivienne Westwood platform heels worn by supermodel Naomi Campbell when she famously fell on the runway in 1993. Determined and resilient, Campbell remarkably carried on with the show, defiantly refusing to use the walking stick given to her for balance, and instead holding it at her waist.
Watch as Elisabeth carefully unboxes the heels and examines them inside and out, revealing the personal touches which make them no other than Naomi's, before telling us about the history of platform shoes, which goes back (unbelievably?!?!) to the 16th century!

That fall imprinted these in my mind forever! I canât imagine even taking a step in them without crashing and burning
Ditto!
Those are marvelous! I wore platforms in the 70s but now as a grandmother, they are impossible for me.
omg from anglomania! the beginning of the super model icons and one of the most iconic shows in fashion ever ever ever. amazing
My favorite moment of these shoes is a picture of Naomi and Vivienne sharing a hug as Vivienne lifts Naomiâs leg almost to her shoulder I think about it all the time lol
Feature the shoes Alexander McQueen made for his Plato's Atlantis fashion show esp the iconic Armadillo, alien, and the titanic shoes. Those high heels are iconic.
Iâd love to see a video about those shoes!
love the xenomorph giger inspired shoes theyâre on another levelll
Would love an iconic heels in fashion series!
Naomi is a fascinating person and it was great to see these iconic shoes in the limelight again. Thank you for sharing this video with us
I met her twice and she was nasty and very rude! I know other who have had the same experience with her, no thanks you!
@@jsio3820 maybe she didn't like you, as far as I can see there is not much to like, you were not forced to watch this video
When you're short of stature, like Naomi, you have to wear ultra-high-heel platform shoes to compensate.
@@jameshuls6940 what hateful part of the world did you spring from to react like this to complete strangers
@@marynell5666 đđđ this made my day, thank you! đ
I thought Judy Garland's ruby slippers were the most famous shoes in the world??? Maybe it's me....
Indeed, but those were only designed for the Movie. Not to be produced or sold.
They are in the Smithsonian in Washington D.C.
Quite correct. Judyâs shoes from âthe Wizard of Ozâ will ALWAYS remain , no excuses or substitutions, the most famous. đ€đ„°
We've already had a look at the ruby slippers on our channel - take a peek! đ www.vam.ac.uk/articles/designing-hollywood-costume
Well.. sheâs a curator for textile and fashion, and the video is created by a British museum. So their context of most famous shoes in the world would be in the fashion/runway world. However if we were to say âmost famous shoes (point blank) then yes Judy Garlands shoes, though they were only made for the movie as a prop.
Thank you, more like this please.
She didn't fall because of the shoes. She fell because she was wearing latex thigh highs, and her knees stuck together.
Yes - that's what she said!
Another very enjoyable videođ
How just gorgeous are these, so well made, and how grateful am i that i don't have to walk a mile in themđ
Naomi really took one for the team there
Platform shoes were first worn by actors in Ancient Greece, specifically at the Epidaurus theater. They were called "kothornoi"
Awesome video !! I visited London's V & A in 2018 - I think its the best museum in the world.
Love this content. Do the Mcqueen Armadillo shoes next plz
Kinda wanna do these next ngl www.google.com/search?q=fish+slippers&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwiH8q6DpNuGAxVJVaQEHTxaDGEQ2-cCegQIABAA&oq=fish+slippers&gs_lp=EgNpbWciDWZpc2ggc2xpcHBlcnMyChAAGIAEGEMYigUyBRAAGIAEMgUQABiABDIFEAAYgAQyBRAAGIAEMgUQABiABDIGEAAYBxgeMgYQABgHGB4yBhAAGAcYHjIGEAAYBxgeSI4QUIANWN4OcAB4AJABAJgBY6AB5AKqAQE1uAEDyAEA-AEBigILZ3dzLXdpei1pbWeIBgE&sclient=img&ei=klBsZofhD8mqkdUPvLSxiAY&bih=940&biw=1820
2:26 you had to look twice to realize Westwood isnât dressed as older woman, only concerned with convenience. That jacket is really special.
While there are well known models today they don't come close to the hype that was around a number of female models in the late 80's-mid 90's which was the hight
I would think McQueenâs Armadillo shoes are more widely recognised and therefore more âfamousâ?? Iâd love a video on those đ
LOVE!!!!!!!
I don't own anything from Westwood's actual line, but she did a collaboration with the shoe company Melissa and I owe a pair of them. They are my favourite pair of shoes ... đ
Beautiful much love from miami đ
Really the earliest form of platform shoe are Japanese Geta from as early as 3400-2250 BCE
I'd say Judy Garlands Ruby Slippeers from the Wizard of Oz are the most famous shoes in the world.
I think the Ruby Slippers from âThe Wizard of Ozâ are the most famous shoes. IMO of course.
My mother was walking furs in Copenhagen in the 60's, she did as an extra income because they didn't make much money. She taught me to walk heels when I was 15 and also taught me, to put the weight on the front of my feet. ( I had to walk around with books on my head too) I still think the Nova Shoes are the most fantastic shoe art.
Oiran's in ancient Japan also wears sky high platform shoes
I'm not really a big fan of the fashion industry, but I thoroughly enjoyed this video. One of my favourites, possibly because I was around in the 80's, and remember the heyday of the supermodels, when they weren't just models, but celebrities.
I have to know what those "shoes" were at 8:27 of the video. They just look like stacks of flat rocks!! đ€
There is a design flaw in the shoes, two of them actually. First, the heel slightly bells out toward the bottom, which is good, it adds stability. But the platform in the front also needed to, and that would prevent the ankle from turning. Though the latex contributed to it, these shoes would have caused a fall anyway. The second flaw is that satin is slippery and doesnât provide the hold that say, velvet or suede would.
The youngsters probably donât even know about the ruby slippers.
I wonder if Alexander McQueens Hoof Shoes you have had on display before would be more famous?
Those ones are called "Armadillo" shoes
@@christianurena510 indeed
Despite being newer, I'd say they are more iconic. Lady Gaga is still synonymous with the Armadillo shoe. These Naomi Campbell shoes aren't at all that famous.
â@@jonathanlandau-litewski7405
It probably depends on the age group, you ask. These shoes here are iconic for everyone, who followed fashion in the 90's, like me. It was an unforgettable moment not the least, because we weren't bombarded with celebrity news on the daily yet. There were far fewer celebrities as well. So the event really stood out.
By 2010, I was 30 and mostly occupied with career and family stuff. So I completely missed the Armadillo Shoes. Had to look them up, actually. But I'm sure it's exactly the opposite way round for someone born just 10 years after me.
@@raraavis7782 very true. I'm 36 so you're right about the different age group thing. I loved the 90s so much, probably the last time I felt satisfied and safe in life!
Are they the only pair?
the blue croc is wonderful. howev. they have NO ankle support. that does help. trust. đđđđ
I own a pair of these!!! Who would I contact to sell them??
The first thing that come to my mind when you say famous pair of shoes is the ruby slippers or Cinderellaâs glass slippers, not this.
ruby slippers trumps these i think
I thought they were purple
Most famous probably red bottoms and converse
Famous silly shoes. How about the ruby slippers from OZ or boots of Astronauts?
Do you really think are the most famous shoes in the world? For me are the McQueen armadillo ones.
No the most famous are the spice girl shoes
Maybe they're the most famous shoes in this video, but they are not by any stretch the most famous shoes in the world. I enjoy these clips, but the titles sometimes need work.
what are the most famous shoes int the world in your opinion? my first thought was alexander mcqueens armadillo shoes
There is a question mark
â@@fynniboi The most famous shoes in the world are probably going to be something basic and accessible as well recognisable to the general public -- including those not into fashion. I would guess, though I'm probably wrong, but Converse shoes would fit that category: almost everyone at one point owned a pair (or an off brand version), it has a recognisable silhouette, and the name alone immediately stirs an image in one's mind.
I would rather label this video as "one of the most iconic celebrity shoes" or something along those lines. It's associated with an *iconic* moment, but the shoes themselves aren't the most famous shoes in the world.
Hopefully that makes sense!
@@christopherfeatherley oh you are so right! thatâs a really smart answer!! Thank you :)
@@christopherfeatherley great answer and I do believe Dorothy would agree (as hers are the most famous/iconic)
Welllll, the historical bit is only about Europe isn't it? As Asian cultures had platform supported shoes way earlier than the 17th century.
My thoughts also. Although for the same reason of keeping clothing clean. Perhaps Europe heard reports of them from Marco Polo.
Lol so did europe. Ancient greece. Sheâs talking about the type of platforms relevant to the design showcased.
She fell because her tights were made of latex and as she walked they rubbed at the knee and caught on themselves and that's what made her fall. Naomi has told the story a hundred times and specifically states it was nothing to do with the height of this shoe.
5:16
Yes and she says this 5 mins into the video.
Did you even watch the video? She said that. đ
Thank you so much for explaining what "gloves" are and what they do! I was so confused and frightened by what I thought were huge misshapen hands!
LOL, yeah. But they've had to explain before why they don't use gloves with antiquarian books. I think they want to be clear that she's not wearing gloves because some things are more valuable than others, it's about what they are made from and what will allow safe handling.
I thought I was the only one who was confused and frightened.
Keep Kim away from these!
đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł yes
Why didn't you make this ASMR?? đđđ
I was expecting they were Elton Johnâs platforms from pinball wizard. THOSE are much more legendary
Why thst atrocious back ground music !!!
Not even close. Itâs the Ruby slippers from the Wizard of Oz and always will be.
1:11 Thank goodness for makeup artists who specialize in Black skin these days. What in the baby powder is going on with her face?
I understand Naomi Campbell means a lot to so many as a black icon and pioneer but from what I've read and seen about her she seems like an intensely unlikeable human being and the almost reverential way in which people speak about her (and other 'supermodels') is a bit tiring...
Listen Mary, you are a bit tiring. And you should not talk about being "intensely unlikeable".
yeah sure, famous. but its hideous! ugh đ©
The most famous shoes in the world would probably be the ruby slippers from wizard of oz? Unless someone can come up with a better example?
It's ridiculous to have to protect shoes from oils on your fingertips.
No, it's not.
we're just trying to keep them nice đ„ș
Famous? I barely know who Naomi Campbell is and Vivienne??? Popular culture does not always need to be enthroned as an achievement. In addition, glorifying shoes that are the ultimate in wasteful fashion that is the modern day equivalent of foot binding is not exactly great for the environment or women. Please curators, do better.
Are you serious? đź
Wasteful? The shoes are still in existence.
âPlease, curators, do what *I* like đĄâ
Say what you want about supermodels, I agree there is not much of note there, but Vivienne Westwood was a punk style innovator, she was one of the people who helped create the original punk look. Sex Pistols wore Westwood. Like the style or not, it would be ridiculous to discount that movement as historically unimportant.
So because you're ignorant of 90e fashion you want everyone else to be too? You hardly know Naomi or Vivienne hahahaha
My gay heart: swooning; my ADHD brain: rapt ! Thank you for sharing â€đ§Ąđđđđ
