This is my honest review of the Winchester SX4. I have used this as a duck hunting shotgun for 6 seasons and have nothing but good things to say about the SX4. It has been extremely good to me.

Outdoor limits, it doesn't have a traditional magazine cut off, but if you hold the bolt release button while pulling back the bolt, it will eject the shell from the chamber without feeding the next round. I have owned the SX4 since it hit the market, and I've had a SX2 for 25+ years and it's the same way. You can also reach inside the magazine and there is a small release you can push and unload the shells from the magazine without cycling the action
Sx4 is by far the best gun I’ve shot! Have it for about a season now with the Carlson creamator and couldnt ask for anything more. Shoulders super well, easy maintenance, cycles, never had a problem yet.
Have the sx4 absolutely love it. It has never failed me and has killed more birds than any other gun I’ve owned. Exactly like you said most reliable gun the only difference I use the muller choke
Sx3 camo 3.5" chamber lots of shells and no issues at all. Way older than yours and holding up fantastic, smooth as hell to cycle. Love it. For the unloading, just empty the mag tube first and then cycle the bolt. All the best from Ireland 🇮🇪
Sx3 is superior to sx4 x10
Never used an SX4 but I've used the SXP (pump version) since 2018 and it's been super reliable. Plus it fixes the problem I've had with some semi-autos that won't always cycle small dove shells after firing a bunch of heavy goose/turkey loads
Ive had my sx4 year and a half was my first gun at 18, noticed very quickly the finish does not hold up at all on the barrel. Finally got it Cerakoted and excited to see how it holds up this upcoming season
I have a Remington Versa Max I bought in 2014. I used it until last year when I upgraded to a Beretta A400 Extreme Plus. I cannot say enough good things about the Versa Max. It handles everything from light target loads to heavy hitting 3.5s. It cycles anything you feed into flawlessly. The recoil wasn't bad, even with the 3.5s because of the Versa Port gas exhaust system. One of the selling points for me for the A400 was the claim that it's the softest shooting auto loader around. I think maybe it does shoot softer than the Veraa Max. But all in all, I would recommend the Versa Max.
I used a black Winchester SXP 12 for my first 5 season of duck hunting and I put it through the ringer and I’ve never had a issue out of it, I upgraded to a Retay Gordion 12 gauge before the start of this past season and I have no complaints about it yet, originally I wanted a SX4 but the Retay was cheaper, from experience it’s hard to beat a Winchester
purchased this gun after you and other duck hunters on youtube raved about it!! I strongly believe it lived up to the hype and will be my waterfowl gun for many more seasons to come!! cant believe they dont sponsor you yet!!!!
Unpopular opinion but I absolutely love the SBE3. 12&20ga. Started with a h&r pardner pump decades ago which it still worked great but then got a newer a400xp and could not stand the way the recoil was sent right to my cheek so I sold it lol. All of mine ended up overboard in the middle of the bay unfortunately.
I bought one two years ago and have used it for two seasons. Waterfowl, doves, and pheasant. Never had a problem cycling or going bang. The only issue I had was during very cold weather it cycled sluggish when I would load it. I switched to a silicone based lube and it worked great. I take mine apart
and clean it every couple of hunts even though I know I don’t need to.
Keep the videos coming. After watching your videos I purchased the SX4 Hybrid, hasn’t missed a shot yet. Thank you for getting me into Duck Hunting.
I and my daughter own one each as we are using it for trap. My gun is 6 years old and has about 2,000 rounds through it without any issues that weren’t directly related to bad ammo. My daughter’s gun is less than 5 years old and has perhaps 4,000 rounds and she had a mechanical bolt wear issue which was fully replaced by Winchester at no cost. The gun is outstanding! Have tried other semiautomatic shotguns but none that I like more than the SX4.
I had a winchester 1300 for over 20 year's i wore that gun out 4 year's ago i bought the sx4 and i love it and when you go to unload your sx4 you can reach into the tube from the bottom and release the catch that's holding the next shell in and it will slide right out
Still haven't used up my SX3 yet... 3.5" in Shadowgrass w/Carlson Cremator Choke tubes.
I’ve owned my SX4 since 2018.. always used the modified choke it came with and it’s deadly.. hunted in cold temps, ice, wind etc and it never failed me.. only complaint I have with it is the bolt isn’t as smooth as other brands but cleaning it a few times a season keeps it at peace… I recommend it over any other gun on the market
I love my SX4 after several years of shooting sporting clays! I have decided to try another tho. I am disappointed that the SX4 cannot be drop shimmed. I am thinking Mossberg 940 Pro
I’ve had an SX4 for 5 years now and it has been flawless aside from target ammo. I have cleaned it thoroughly but still doesn’t like lighter target loads consistently. As far as a hunting gun it has been one of the best I have ever used and nothing has made me want to change it in that aspect.
Just bought one in real tree max 7 your review pushed me to get it!
Thanks for sharing, love mine so much I now have 2
I’ve had mine three seasons now and I love it, runs like a dream.
I just got a weatherby element this year haven’t tried it yet for duck hunts this is my first shotgun that I have bought last year I used my brother in-laws stroger and loved that one but glad that I have my own now
Sx4 is by far the best shotgun I have ever picked up! I absolutely love mine been using mine going into 5th season next year never had a misfire, it has never had cycling issues, and I’ve absolutely beat the crap out of it because I use my gear I don’t baby it! And it’s held up absolutely perfectly besides a few scratches and wear marks in the camo.
I got my SX3 about a year before the SX4's came out. No complaints about the SX3, other than the small charging handle. I have a Briley Charging Handle for mine now, and that oversize makes it nice. Wish the bolt release was a little bigger on the SX3 also. The only problem I had was basically self induced. Upgraded the recoil spring and I used the heavy spring instead of the light spring. It was causing shells to hang up when cycling. Once I switched to the light spring it rarely gives me a problem and when it does it is usually on a straight overhead shot.
My 870 is out of commission right now so I’ve been turkey hunting with my dads sx3 this spring. Absolutely loving it and really not looking forward to going back to my gun for duck season this year. Definitely getting an sx4 as soon as possible
I had mine 3.5” waterfowl model since opening weekend of 2019. SXP failed me for the last time and traded it off (and two other rifles) to scrape up the cash for the SX4. I love it. It’s been a grouse, duck, goose and turkey killing machine since and have zero reasons to buy another shotgun. Maybe a second SX4. I really like the pattern master goose for all ranges and 3.5” 2s. The only time it failed me was after it went for a swim in 10 degree weather. Firing pin frozen up. A little solvent and she was running again and was able to finish out the limit for the day. The camo isn’t wearing much for the abuse. They are the best shotgun in its price class and above in my opinion.
Remington 1187 premiere and the browning Maxus
You are the only reason why I bought my SX4 as a matter of fact I bought 2 of them. I love both of mine.
Bought my SX4 7 years ago. Runs just fine to this day. I bought a Maxus 2 Wicked Wing, essentially the same gun but made by Browning. Love them both.
Made in the same factory in Portugal
I’ve got a SX4 from about 2022. (12 gauge 3.5). Really enjoy it! I do have one issue however:
I’ve shot plenty of shells, from heavy goose loads, slugs, to target loads…no jams. Now I’ve fallen in love with BOSS shot shells. I’d say once every box the gun shoots, ejects the empty shelll, grabs the next round, but only pushes it halfway into the chamber. Anyone else experience this and/or have a solution?
You were a big part in me buying a SX4 5 seasons ago. Loved it so much I just bought it in 20 ga as well as well
I recently purchased the SX4 last season because my OG browning Maxus finally crapped out on me. So far this gun has cycled light dove loads all the way through heavy goose loads. It did however give me one hickup this last Friday when I shot my turkey. The shell ejected but did not load another round into the chamber. Not sure if it's because of the tungsten turkey loads or what. But so far I freaking love the SX4
I got a sx4 hunter hybrid and it’s a beast 4 seasons strong doing all kinds of hunting couldn’t be happier with it jam up gun
Winchester pumps are THE most underrated shotguns on the planet. Mossberg & Remington get all the love, but really, Winchesters are awesome. I have a SXP Turkey Hunter that's a real beaut to shoot.
I loved the sx4 ever since my buddy let me shoot his a while back they just shoulder so well and the ergonomics are great
Is the recoil light on the sx4’s?
@ outdoor limit What chamber size is your gun do you duck and goose hunt with it? My sx4 is a 3 inch should I buy a 3.5 inch chamber gun for goose and duck or can my 3 inch handle goose and ducks?
Have had my sx4 for a year now and I absolutely love it
2 SX2’s, 5 SX3’s and 1 SX4, love them all!
Heard a lot of people have good reliability out of them, and have seen one that out of the box would not fire (which I determined was factory oil and gunk stopping the firing pin from hitting the primer with enough force). So my takeaway is it’s a great gun, just clean it and test it before you go straight to the duck blind, and don’t be like my buddy.
I’m a Winchester nut tends to happen when you have family retired from there I currently have the sxp sx2 sx3 and sx4 believe it or not my favorite is the sx2 all of them are made real well just personal preference
I miss my Remington 870 but I traded it for a semi auto I no longer have so now I have a Stevens 320 just so I have a beater shot gun for duck season
Browning BPS is my shotgun of choice
My favorite is my browning maxus with carlson cremator meduim range. The auto load feature the browning has over the winchester has saved my butt many a time and the magazine lock (which I first thought was dumb) has actually come in quite handy.
Edit: your gripe about unloading is easily solved. Instead of cycling rounds through the chamber, just push the follower up and depress the shell stop to empty the shells from the magazine and then rack the one out of the chamber.
i have the browning silver and it’s trash worst shotgun i’ve ever own
I got a sx4 3 inch 12 gage and I love the gun so much. Going on a pheasant hunt with it in October. My dad has a Remington 870 pump action 12 gage. One day I was shooting trap and I picked his gun (was my old shotgun) I did not like the pump I have strictly shot my sx4 for 9 months to 1 year the pump action I found more heavy idk the weight. I also think it kicks harder. But my dad shot some turkey loads in it this year and I shot his 870 with one and then I shot my sx4 after with the exact same ammo. The turkey load kicks a lot more on the 870
I unload my sx4 by leaving a shell in the chamber, push the loading ramp up, push the shell stopper in on the side and it will release a shell in the tube, repeat then unload the one in the chamber. I never rack them all out
Had one for 3 years now. Only jam it’s ever had was on day 3 of spec/crane hunting in west Texas
I have a Remington 870 Express that my father bought me in 1988. I have killed everything imaginable with this shotgun.
Bought SX4 20 ga. in September of 2023 but never got around to patterning it, so I stuck with my old shotgun. About two weeks ago I get out the SX4 to take it to pattern and the shells won’t stay in the tube. Have not even fired the first round out of it yet. Sent back to Winchester. Not a good start for me and the SX4. 😢😢
Remington express 870 great gun with a pattern master in it
Push the load ramp up then pull the bolt back
I’ve had mine for about the same time. Only thing I’ve had problems with is I’ve wore out 2 recoil pads. Winchester always sends me another free of charge. Might be because I let pad sit in mud and stuff haha. Bout 8 cases, different loads no issues. Except for 1 wad got stuck had to use my car antenna to get it out on A dove hunt. Was a bad shell for sure
You can load one shell, when you cock back you have to push the bottom gate and it will stop a shell from going on the tray.
had sx4 always jamming, had a browning silver always jamming, had a bereta a400 extrem plus never jammed??but prefer safey button location on sx4 and silver ! nice video!
I’ve had my sx4 the day they dropped and honestly only my browning maxes 2 wicked wing and browning gold 10 light “2020” model I can say beats them but the price points aren’t nowhere comparable so honestly sx4 is one shotgun That will not disappoint you at all 🦃 🦆 🪿 🦌 🕊️ I’ve taken no problems!!!
Also my front sight fell off too after 4 years😂😂😂
I was between the sx4 and the franchi affinity. The fit and finish of the affinity was amazing. You gotta try one!
Love my sx4 one of if not the best shotguns I have ever owned super dependable.
Have had mine for two seasons. Love it when I can find birds
You may like the Franchi AFFINITY 3.
If you like overpriced things and heavy recoil!
@@veteranironoutdoors8320 I can see the price has gone up since I got mine a few years ago. However, my Remington 1187 has the same recoil.
Good advice take a gun clean wire brush and a gun oil and clean the barrel, and it should make it look like it was new
Been shooting my old winchester 2200 for 15years now i have to moves on and i bought a 940 pro snowgooses
I have 3 SX guns 2 SX1 and 1 SX4 one of my SX1 got stolen I broke my heart .Very good gun
Love my SX4
I love my A400
It’s a toss up between my Maxus or SX3 in 20ga
Best gun I own, especially compared to the price I paid for it.
They came with the tactical defender model in 2024….anyone wanna give it a try?
Browning Maxus 2
Stoeger 12 gauge 3500
Rem. 870 12ga.
Love my sx4 for waterfowl, get yours cerekoted or re blue your barrel and you will get many more years of life out of that work horse 👍
Sbe3 rob roberts cerakote, and forcing cone lengthened
I have a sx4 that is a machine, but it is the dirtiest gun I own. I have to clean it more often than my franchi that I use for pigeons.
It’s called a magazine cutoff.
Just bought an sx4 after years of disappointment from my stoeger
You were a major factor in picking up an SX4, and being a totally lefthanded camo shotgun was the other.
Beretta a400 all day
Super x2
Benelli black eagle 2
Compared to the sx2 and sx3 it’s trash a pos ! They cheaper out on every aspect of the great sx2-3
Beretta a400
You begged for donation...for a new foul gun? Lol.
Go fund me! Really.
